His decision paves the way for dumped Cowboys coach Neil Henry to take on the toughest job in the NRL - Stuart’s old job at the Parramatta Eels.

The appointment in Canberra will be announced Thursday, with Stuart returning to the club from where he became one of the great half-backs of the modern era.

He won three premierships in the lime green jersey (1989,1990 and 1994) and represented his state and country from the nation’s capital.

It was with great regret that he informed Parramatta officials Wednesday night he would be leaving just one year into a three-season deal.

**His decision is very much based on personal issues and care for his special-needs daughter.**

It will be the fourth club he has coached in the NRL, following on from stints at the Roosters, where he won a premiership, Cronulla and Parramatta.

Despite a disastrous year at the Eels, Raiders are convinced he is the right man to lead the underperforming club back to finals football in 2014.

Stuart played 203 games for the Raiders before finishing his playing career at the Canterbury Bulldogs.

It has always been the intention of retiring Canberra Raiders chairman John McIntyre to persuade Stuart to one day return to the club.

Stuart confirmed he would be leaving the Eels late Wednesday night in a phone call to chairman Steve Sharp.

“The period I’ve been with the Parramatta Eels has been extremely challenging, not only for me, but for many people like Steve Sharp who clearly have the best interests of the club at heart,” he said.

“I sincerely hope the stability the club is entitled to will soon return and reward those people who have genuine commitment and passion for the Eels.”

He would not comment on whether the off-field boardroom dramas contributed to his decision.

McIntyre announced he would stand down from the chairman’s role at the Raiders’ best and fairest awards Wednesday night after three decades.

His last job was to oversee the recruitment of Stuart.

McIntyre will be replaced by board member Dr Allan Hawke as chairman.

Dr Hawke paid tribute to McIntyre and his contribution to the Raiders.

“John McIntyre has dedicated his life to the Canberra Raiders and is the longest serving member of the organisation,” Dr Hawke said.

“He will always have a home at the Raiders and will continue on as club patron, a role his late father and Raiders founding father Les McIntyre held until he passed away in 2009.”

i dont want to sound cynical but what exactly does that mean?

Its an excuse, plain and simple, to try and ease the bad publicity. **Anybody knows that there are numerously more support services for medically disabled kids in sydney than in Canberra.** If that is the case however, has he been "neglecting" his daughters needs for the last 10 or so years here in Sydney???
Its rubbish…..

It's already been stated that the move back was to get his daughter the support of his family, nothing to do with whether Sydney or Canberra have the best support services. Given that all his family live in Canberra it make sense

Hope you never have a sick family member to use as an "excuse"

All his family is here in Sydney….

i wish him and his family the very best but this is how it looks

he signed a long deal with the eels when his daughter was autistic- all of a sudden there is a job in canberra and he wants out giving his daughter as an excuse.

a poor look for him imo.

No….he's never mentioned his daughter as far as Im aware, Ive never heard him mention her...its always other journos, commentators

interview with wiedler
said it's coz of his daughter and wife. they have a bigger support in canberra etc. etc. etc.

what has changed in his family since he signed with parra? just that a job at canberra came and now he's breaking his contract. not sure if the eels can take any legal action though

Don't think they can. Pretty sure I read he had a release clause due to the board. Not sure how true it is.

Sorry mate, as much as I dislike Stuart, he's not breaking his contract if it contains a get out clause.

Possibly once Ink , and I could be wrong , but I'm sure he mentioned her not long after he was having all the health issues not long after retiring if you may remember

Brenden Santi has a get out clause in his contract re: Ricky Stuart as coach.

Would you try and keep him at the Tigers?

Are you saying there was a time when she wasn't autistic?

1\. Ricky Stuart leaving parra after sacking half the squad and asking fans to be patient is one of the biggest dog acts in recent NRL memory .

2\. Brendan Santi had a get clause which allows him out of his deal with parra if Ricky isnt the coach

I've just got word from someone purporting to be in the know, that most of Ricky's extended family actually live in Sydney. I imagine that he will attempt to move them to Canberra or maybe it was already in the works. Whatever the case, the cash was there and he took it whilst making "heart-felt" promises to Parra members via internal memo's, turning the club upside down, and applying his own signature Wooden Spoon custom to the club. The bloke is a dog pure and simple. This coming from someone who dislikes Parra as much as the next guy…

Also, there is little doubt that Ricky had thoughts about leaving Parra around the time he tapped those 12 players on the shoulder. To make that decision with thoughts to not being around anyway when the effects of that decision take hold is incredibly selfish.

And let's not forget about the Raiders. What the hell are they thinking by hiring a bloke who has established a coaching record since 2009 of 10 wins from 51 matches. He is a joke is so are the Raiders. Just ask the Sharks, Roosters, and now Parra…

nope im saying she was autistic before and she's autistic now- nothing has changed in his family.

Difference being that now the Raiders job is available. Being a Rugby League coach means you go where the work is.

Not defending Stuart here, just saying that moving to Canberra can still be partly about his daughter even though he took a job at Parra first.

Its a decision that is unsavoury to most I imagine, but if I was honest with myself, I couldnt blame him and would probably do the same thing.

Afterall…people do this sort of thing everyday in their careers, it just not played out in the media for everyone to read about

Agree 100%
Who's to say the Eels board wouldn't have fired him next year if they didn't improve.

SMH article tonight saying Brett Kimmorley unlikely to remain at Canberra with Stuart heading down. Would he be a useful halves coach?

Yes, great footy brain. Would have loved him or Fittler as assistant coach. He'd be a great pickup for Under 20's coach now that Payten has been promoted.
