The RLPA are complaining that players are coming under financial stress by being fined and not being suspended.
They want the fines to be proportionate to the salary of the player.

Firstly, these players are professional but are still citizens.
Just like a civil offence, if you do the crime, you do the time.
When I was young I did some dumb things and got done for DUI.
The first time this happened the judge took into account that I was on minimum wage and gave me more licence suspension time and a small fine that I could pay off.
Was that enough to deter me from doing the crime again.
NO!
I was did the unthinkable and got done again and this time a higher reading.
The sentence was the reverse. I was hit with a huge fine.
The later sentence must have hit home because I haven't had problems with the law for the rest of my life.
The point I'm trying to make is I sort of agree that monetary penalties for players could put strain on a family.
So I would agree that the penalties should initially be suited to the players situation and not by a dollar sliding scale for the offence grading.
We've lately seen players like JWH and Nelson Asoffa... commit offences, elbows to the face etc, that they are continually committing each week.
They are getting good coin so why should the club and the supporters put up with having their best players sit out games through suspensions. They should be hit in the hip pocket.
Another issue is, how do you stop clubs paying for fines. Why do I say this.... it's because it seems repeat offenders who have been targeted and getting off with fines are from big rich clubs 🤔
Maybe clubs should be fined for having repeat offenders in the club running amok.
There is a fine line between wanting to see gladiators in action and seeing someone being serious injured. This problem is really a damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I like where the RPLA is going - fines could be a % of the match payment based on grading as opposed to a set amount. $1500 for a development player is significantly different to $1500 for Munster (and he is a grub).

As for who is paying the fines - if it is the club, what is the incentive for the player? It has to be the players that feel the pinch (as you learnt the hard way) otherwise there will be no change in behaviour.

All great points.
If the fines increased everytime regardless of the offence/grading and kept accumulating for the whole season it would hit them where it hurts and they would end up paying really big dollars at the end of the year.
Surely the club like Easts wouldn't like to be paying out 50k for a forearm massage to the nose....or would they 🤔

Financial stress... What's the minimum player rate nowadays... About $80k?
Yeah that’s the first thing I thought of. Currently there wouldn’t be a fine available in an amount that would cause financial stress to any but the minimum contract players.

I think the club should pay the fine, like they do for coaches in the pressers. If you're a truck driver and you park in a No Parking zone, the drivers take the demerit but the company pays the fine isn't it?

Also, the fines should come out of the cap.

Thats a good point as i am sure players like JWH and NAS are sent out with the instructions to intimidate and take it further where necessary. However i would only be happy with club paying fines if the total amount they pay out this season is deducted from their cap for the next season.

I think the players need to be responsible for their own actions. The smart clubs would just top up 3rd party payments to compensate the players.

Just go break that players nose for us. Don’t worry about the fine, we’ll sort it.

Edit: Not sure if all clubs would pay the coaches fine?

not sure about no parking but speed and red light cameras if the driver in a marked company vehicle cops the rap themselves its the standard penalty....if its the company its about 10 or 20 times the penalty

Truck driver pays the fine not the company, if you park where you're not allowed, driver pays, if company pays kindly let me know

With traffic speeding fines, I think that if the driver is a member of a union like the RTBU or TWU then the union will pay the fine, but i don't know if they'll pay parking fines while performing their job.
