Rock Bottom (and why this is a good thing)

In all the years we have sucked (i.e. Every year except 3) we have not collected the spoon.
We also haven't had an extended run at the bottom of the ladder, I meant dead last like we are now.

We have been able to take comfort, although it has been scant, in two facts that have contributed to our mediocrity:

1\. In most seasons we have had a purple patch that has seen us push for the 8 at some stage, and this has been enough to keep our heads above water.

2\. Statistically there has always been someone worse.

Well in the NRL, mediocrity gets you around position 9 - 12, as we know. But when every other team improves, soon mediocrity becomes a memory and we are left with what we have now, the worst rugby league team in the comp, materially and statistically.

This is the year that I wish we had in 2007, or 2012\. I hope we can make something of it, because the team is awful to watch right now. However, if we can't then the one positive will be that there can be no more excuses. the club has had too many small successes that have masked massive attitude problems, we have suspected that club is weak, but now everyone can see it. Newcastle the dogs and warriors have probably highlighted their games against us in the calendar as a chance to show what they can do!

Unless these players show they give a rats, and have a dig every single week for 80 minutes, then we will come last and we will deserve it. If we do then whoever we lose to the open market will simply provide us with an opportunity to spend their cash elsewhere. There are 3 players I would like to keep at this stage (teddy, woods, Nofo) but if they move on then so be it.

To lose yesterday's game so meekly from a position of strength sums us up. That game is a metaphor for our season, you could see the players that were gassed refusing to move. At their level they seriously need the mental toughness of an elite soldier. I hate comparing sport to war, it is disrespectful, but if you will, allow me this one comparison. There are some people who have the ability to push through, and they can do well as rugby league players, even if they aren't the most skilful. They will make their legs move when there is no oxygen, they might miss the tackle, but they don't stand and watch someone run through a gap. The photo of Sue standing their like a kid in a under 12's trial is a perfect summary of what we lack (he is far from our worst). If we come last this year we would have earned it, and I believe it will be more beneficial in the long term than struggling to finish in position 12 or 14.

I'm sorry if this dramatic to some, I'm generally a positive poster, but you have to see what's in front of you sometimes.

I think you're generally right, the chickens are coming home to roost for the years of bad back office management, in particular contract stuff ups.

Hopefully this is the wake up call that the club needs to get som stability and professionalism in the office and a new attitude and focus on the field.

While i don't think we've hit rock bottom, i lot more can and will probably happen, I know where you're coming from 'Old Man Tiger', i think yesterday's result was a far worse defeat than our previous two losses, and like you i keep it positive, but yesterday highlighted our inability to fight for a result. Once Melb had scored twice (the tigers still leading) there was an inevitable feeling of losing and an inability to work against it. And then once we were behind on the scoreboard, not even the crowd seemed to react to having possession of the footy ball.

I'll be there next Sunday for the next instalment of 2017.

I'm fine with what's happening atm, provided we land Cleary.

Im not so Keen on Cleary.

Just like JT, Potter, Sheens he isnt the Craig Bellemy type coach that the club desperately needs.

I like the sentiment in this thread.

Our club needs to strong leadership amongst the playing group,

Great post. I think this could go 1 of 2 ways. We are playing so bad and generally its a reflection of the "big 4" being out of form. This could be a good thing as it scares potential bidders and drops their value. Or 2 - the real class in this team Woods and Tedesco could think about it and say you know if we were playing for a decent team then how fun would it be to be winning and trying to win a comp. Also players we want to sign, would they really want to come to the wooden spooners. We definitely need a wake up call but I'm not sure which way this will go. We might end up with a war chest and no players to spend it on.

things can only get better,as we all hope.

newcastle got the wooden spoon last year and are going better this year- their results have improved.

apart from last year,i couldnt tell you who were the wooden spooners in preceeding years.if we get the spoon ,so be it.

im more concerned about resigning teddy and woodsy.i willbe miffed if either of those two leave.

all i want to see are honest performances and the occasional win.

last sundays game was okay but the cheyse blair try up the middle was appalling defence. dont want to see that again.
that try was a carbon copy of the rapana try the week before.no more of that codswallop, i say.

Unfortunately lacklustre and mediocre are printed in our DNA.

We are, and always have been, a 'bottom-feeder'. I see nothing in the foreseeable future that will change this. Tell me when, other than Ellis, that we even looked at buying an experienced, hard nut forward to put steel in the pack?

When have we made a play at decent backline players? We have had a few speed machines that could be improved but we let them go. We replace them with Jordan Rankin for goodness sake.

"They wanted more money?" So what - get rid of others.
"We don't have the money?" Yep because of many years of inept salary cap managing = see the above lacklustre and mediocre comments

For whatever reason, the club has always been focussed on blindly developing juniors rather than looking to improve externally. There are pros and cons towards the approach, but the NRL CBA doesn't really reward this stance in the slightest (I know I keep harping on about this), so it's about time we got with the times.

We had a few years of looking at marquee signings - Ellis, Tuqiri, Blair et al with mixed success.

We need a good man manager, that doesn't necessarily constitute ripping doors off walls or having half a dozen expletives in a fifteen word rant. That's not to say I wouldn't take a Bellyache, Toovey or Hasler. I would, but there's many ways to skin a cat.

Cleary gets players to play for him. The Warriors looked the best they ever have since their inception under him. Struggled a bit more with Penrith, but still got them to the prelims with an injury riddled side. And they're reaping the rewards with their juniors coming through now which I am sure he would have had a hand in identifying and implementing pathways for.

We want a coach who will get the best out of the players on and off the field, I think Cleary can do that. He's a quiet achiever, he doesn't need to be all bluster to make a point.
