LIVE GAME Round 10 v Storm

Live Game Discussion
At the game yesterday watching both teams warm up we looked like a park footy team warming up. Storm were professional, had twice the staff. Their staff and their drills were high paced and we were fluffing around.

Benji vibes good with boys and getting them to play for him but I have seriously doubts on his actual coaching and game prep, along with selections and bench use.
We need more experienced assistants
Don’t beat around the bush , we need an experienced coach

I thought playing the storm in melbourne would be a good test for us to see where we are at.
They totally schooled us. On the field and in the coaches box. Maybe it was a hiding we needed.
We looked overawed from the get go. We were out enthused and overpowered. It really stood out
we really need to bolster our forward pack. Our backs lacked any urgency. Reality check and good for
some egos. Write it off like our F/A.

Be interesting to see how we respond to that.

Seeing Naden on the left wing and Staines at right centre was just bizarre to me. Weaken a weakened
area with weak links. Couldn't understand the switch.
And unfortunately Charlie butchered a couple of early opportunities by passing too soon when if he’d held on and gone straight would have had a different outcome. Played it like a winger
Instead of a centre but that’s what he is.

Listening to the Wests Tigers Life coaches report with Adel Hage (a former coach & employee of the club) he mentioned post Brisbane game that the lack of staff that travelled compared to the amount of staff Brisbane had was a serious cause of concern. He mentions it's down to the financial limitations of the club & basically they can't afford to bring a whole heap of staff with them to interstate games.
Was Kassidy there ?

Yeah killed all momentum of a resurgence early on. Toa would've finished it IMO even Naden.

Coach!

A long story about attitude

I recall being an older Captain Coach of a team of apprentices playing in the finals of a Country Competition. We had beaten the team we played in the GF pretty conviningly twice before facing them in the finals. We won the minor premiership and despite me trying to focus the team on the here and now we went into the semi final expecting to win and have a smooth run through to the GF.

We lost the major semi by a decent margin in a spiteful game. We were dominated all over the park. Our team was primarily young apprentices with a mix of old head instructors (and by old I also mean no longer really A grade standard). We were put off our game by a combination of biff and hardened park footy players in their peak.

The opposition knew how to play finals footy and went straight into the GF. We fought our way through the finals and were preparing to play them in the GF. As we were an Army team playing in a civi comp the boss gave the apprentices a "week off" their trade schools to prepare.

What happened during that week was amazing. We started the week with an in depth discussion of how we were beaten in the semi. It was an honest session where players admitted that they were baited and somewhat overawed by the biff and hard edge of the opposition. The collecive decision was that to win the GF we had to focus on the end goal and ignore the biff unless someone was being belted - in this case it was to be one in all in.

Post that session there was a drive in the team that I had not seen before; they were focussed, still joking around, but really focussed on the drills when we executed them. I remember being hit hard during the training drills instead of the 75/80% we usually trained at so as not to cause injuries. The focus was on running and tackling harder than the opposition, on clean execution and intent to make every play count. No new drills or special GF plays, it was all between the ears stuff.

We won the toss and chose to kick off so we could send a message. We hit them in defence with everything we had and they were shocked by the start. With ball in hand our side was committed and execution was crisp. The opposition were still hitting hard and were playing dirty but the biff really didn't eventuate as our side were focussed on the win. We went on to win the GF 66-0; not from a skill or fitness advantage, simply a change in the focus of the players. They were focussed on the end goal; not small battles with individuals.

I think we faced that on Sunday. Melbourne was focussed and had intent. I think the playing group were believing what they were hearing in the media and simply thought that we could dish up what we did agaisnt Cronulla and Saints and it would overcome the Storm.

Had we scored off our early chances we may have been able to claw our way into the game. Had, Naden/AD focussed on the ball as opposed to the individual that try isn't scored. Had our middles scrambled another try is prevented. That exact middles scenario led to tries by Saints last week so surely we w=should have learned form that.

Benji and Co have to take some of the blame for the preparation; however, now that I have calmed, most of the blame has to be levelled at the playing group. I am positive that Benji and the coaching staff would have warned about a bounce back Melbourne side with a home game on a Sunday afternoon. From what I saw, I don't think anyone listened - we were believing our own media stories.

I trust that this event to our team is like my loss in the major semi some year ago. We need to use this loss as fuel to propel the playing group into action - action that is led by the players making amends for their own shortfalls. We need to focus on Souths and defeating them - we should only look back to reflect on the embarassment of Sunday's defeat as motivation going forward.

By the way - if we ever catch up for a beer don't ask me about the try I scored in that GF - you will find it hard to believe how bloody good it was!

Jolls,I like your input to the forum....
I have been peeved off really badly with yesterday's performance,I work in a prominent hotel in the Southern Highlands and copped plenty from the patrons who know I'm a dyed in the wool Tigers supporter and member..to top it off it was mothers day and I couldn't voice my opinion openly without swearing, the dears would have been disgusted at the expletives I wanted to unleash..
I only want to say 2 things that I want to get off my chest..
1..Our squad is 25 percent NRL standard and 75 percent fringe first graders or worse..most other clubs seem to have at least 50 percent NRL standard squads..this is being rectified apparently by Richo, the sooner the better..
2..Benji is a rookie coach as far as I'm concerned and I have given him the benefit of the doubt until seasons end..In my opinion he really needs to get rid of the boys club assistants and get professional help from people with heaps of coaching knowledge to help him ..this is NRL not bush footy..
Sorry about the rant but I needed to cool off and have a vent...cheers guys..

Ok mate, in through the nose and out through the mouth !!
And don’t worry, there’s been a lot of ranting going on since 2pm Sunday.
😀👍🏻

Benji Marshall used words like “disappointed” and “embarrassed” to describe the Wests Tigers’ 64-0 loss to Melbourne on Sunday.

“[There are] probably a few other words you could use,” Marshall said.

Tigers fans, no doubt, came up with no shortage of colourful terms.

Melbourne were always going to be primed to bounce back after their Magic Round loss to Canberra, and always save their best football for day games at home, including blistering starts against Parramatta and the Warriors. There was also an afternoon carve-up of Manly at Brookvale this season.

Coach Craig Bellamy was also aware of the second-half comebacks over the weekend, and was never going to let his players take their foot off the throat of the Tigers.

As Marshall flew out of the Victorian capital late Sunday, there would have been five big moments that left him feeling “disappointed, embarrassed … and probably a few other words you could use”.

Papenhuyzen magic

Greg Alexander said on post-match television coverage that Marshall’s video review only needed to last four minutes.

That was when Papenhuyzen grubbered for himself on the last play, kicked the ball again before chasing hard and somehow planting it down. The game had barely started, yet four Tigers defenders stood around and showed little urgency to dive on the ball.

Fonua Pole and Samuela Fainu looked at each other, and Brent Naden hesitated. By the time he reacted, it was too late. It set the tone for the Tigers’ afternoon, and their level of desperation did not improve.

Turuva targeted

The Storm sent a lot of high kicks towards winger Sunia Turuva, even though he was defending on the shady side of AAMI Park, and not forced to defuse any bombs staring into the sun.

The height advantage of Xavier Coates was factored in, but Turuva has struggled defensively at times this season.

Turuva has been a breath of fresh air with his energy and positivity, but he still needs work in defence. He could also do with a new pair of boots, given he slipped trying to stop Grant Anderson, just as he did trying to stop Parramatta’s Josh Addo-Carr last month.

Tiring out Terrell

The Storm wanted to play up the middle with quick play-the-balls in the hope of tiring out front-rower Terrell May.

May did an excellent job of coping with the heavy workload, but was always going to feel the pinch, including late in the game when he could not muster any speed to stop Cam Munster charging into a gap and sending Bronson Garlick over for the final four-pointer.

May was given a rare seven-minute breather, which would have been longer had starting prop Fonua Pole not suffered a knee injury. But expect teams to adopt a similar blueprint with May moving forward.

Where are the chasers?

How on earth were Melbourne allowed to get back into the field of play after a Brent Naden chip kick approaching the hour.

Cam Munster raced back and grabbed the ball, and instead of a few Tigers defenders forcing him over the dead-ball line, he passed to Papenhuyzen, who passed to Coates before they started their set 45m from their try line.

Where were the chasers? Where was the effort? The lack of orange jerseys was telling.

Chopping down NAS

Nelson Asofa-Solomona has made plenty of rivals look silly when trying to stop his giant frame.

In his second game of the season, Asofa-Solomona was unstoppable off the bench, making metres for fun and finishing with nine tackle breaks.

Marshall played Test football for New Zealand with Asofa-Solomona, so more homework and effort should have been put into rushing up in numbers and stopping him. It sounds simple, but look what happens when teams

That’s the case at every game…our warm up routines always lack energy
