LIVE GAME Round 19 v Warriors

Live Game Discussion
Yes mate, but be fair we were also missing two spine players. Galvin, Bula and tds yes I know champ they have left . But not much difference when we trained all off season with them in those slots. Not to mention Latu’s what second starting game. It’s not like we have a consistent line up. They said it’s the 7th halves combination we’ve had this season, hardly consistent. Be fair in your analysis, dont be the hater, be measured.

They were missing two spine players as well…. And had a half playing his first game for them ,,,personally im not going to cop Galvin missing as an excuse now for us, Latu is a better player

The game yesterday was won by the warriors simply through fundamental basics been done better than the tigers.

They dominated with :
- Better deep kicking game
- Better speed around the ruck with the ball
- Better control of our play the ball speed
- Better goal line defense

Tigers played the whole game with no momentum usually starting our sets deep in our half and poor last tackle kick execution killed them
Yes, but how did that happen?

They identified our strengths and nullified them

They were able to do that because we let them - we didn't identify the vulnerabilities of their play and exploit them. If we had - we would have been in the mix.

I put it half down to player performance, we don't have halves with strong deep kicking games.

Other half is game plan, running our small guys into the teeth of their defensive line every single play when its not yielding results cokes down to game adjustments..... I get they wanted to play safe wet weather style footy but the wahs showed the better game plan to keep our compressed defensive line honest By feeding it out to their second rowers early for easy meters which then opens up the defense in the middle

So the million $ question is why we didn't adapt - is it the coaching or are out on field decsion makers poor.

Ultimately comes down to the coach, Marshall needs to identify and adapt better to the flow of the game and get the message out there through the trainers.
I think api should hold accountability aswell but he might be instructed by Marshall to stick to the game plan until he gets word from coach

Seriously dumb game plan..running one out against the biggest forward pack in the comp, rather than moving the ball around,is just plain silly
On top of that.our kicking game was focussed on distance,so most of theirkick takes were largely uncontested, whereas our guys were under pressure
Just dont get it
But way I see it...its one step closer to the end for coach Benji,a lot depending on Titans this w/e at LO..
..lose that, and the pressure becomes insurmountable

Id missed the game yesterday but from comments on here and podcast i listened to i thought we wpuld be horrific but I still put myself through it and I was shocked. We played really well given the circumstances

We were playing the Warriors in NZ a top 4 teams with them fully rested coming off a bye and 2 byes in a few weeks having only left NZ once in a month while we were flying to NZ, our star fullback out, our Captain coming off Origin a couple of days before following a few days in hospital and our hooker Api coming off a concussion stand down yet we were in it till the 72nd minute.

Our completion rate was over 90% for 70 minutes, they only scored when they had a bunch of possession and twice got through gaps when we had players slip over which is just unlucky and for us when we had a run of possession we either scored or forced a line drop out - was a close game all day till the last 8 minutes.

Toa was playing injured all day, Sam Fainu was injured late- think we played the last few minutes with 12

Overall we played a good team, well rested at home in front of a big crowd and competed for 75 minutes. If we had kicked the first 2 conversion then we go into last 10 mins 4 points down and anything could happen.

Douehi had a whale of a game and looked good at lock especially.

Yes we need a bit more line speed and oomph but honestly that is somewhat down to them just being fresh and us not.

Mate Latu needs a lot more game time, I rate him better than that turd. But he’s new to first grade and hasn’t got his legs yet. Wahs back up half has played several first grade games at the titens. They are facts, u rarely come into first grade as a half and hit the ground running week in week out. Takes time that’s what I am saying. Look that and some dodgy ref calls like the seyfarth strip, Jesus that was a shite call. Big call in the game. Were they better than us, yes. But so they should be, playing at home to a packed crowd after two losses, coming 4th in the comp.

100% no excuses, just reasons. We need to be better, a few more players in the right spots. Should of kept TDS though, Sou again looked tired and the back up hookers kick at a 5th tackle kick by them was poor and led to a try for them.

Api not Sou

It’s funny …the Warriors were coming off a couple of losses … missing three of their best players …us off the back of a win and a game where Latu was close to our best player … a lot of folks here were tipping a tight game or even a Tigers win…. Then the game is played and .we are comfortably beaten and the new consensus is that we were never a hope anyway …ok

Champion @boonboon, I always enjoy reading your posts.
Fair, and just about always nailing the nitty gritty.
Cheers.

Things are never as bad as they seem ... a club weekend in Auckland ...

Jersey Flegg - LOST - but led by 20 points with 10 minutes to go!
NSW Cup - LOST - but should have won with the opportunities we had against the top team!
NRL - LOST - beaten in the middle & some poor individual decisions but we were in the game into the last 10 minutes!

Still a long way to go but we've gone from diabolical to average/poor this season. Next step is to become an average/good team.

I love your optimism but I do think you are being overly generous. We went up against a weakened version of their gun NSW cup team which hasn't lost in 3 months. They had to replace three of their players promoted to the NRL team (Boyd, Tuapiki, Stowers-Smith) with flegg players who hadn't played cup yet. Yet they still beat us in all three grades. Sadly the weekend demonstrated that our depth across the pathways is not up to par.

Losing up by 20 with 10 to go is really hard to do… there should be some recognition of this from the club …it’s new levels …I’ll let you decide of what

Not saying it’s good but there are positives compared to where we have come from the past 2-3 seasons.

Inexcusable losing Flegg, Cup should have won 13+ imo & NRL stayed in the contest.

As Madge used to say, “we’re always in the fu*kn game”, or something like that!

There is a reason that we haven’t been able to beat teams like the Raiders and Warriors for years. We simply don’t have a pack that can match them for aggressive hard running and tackling. They are too big and strong for us - boys against men - and Benji said it clearly in the presser- we just didn’t match their physicality in any area of the game and we lost the field position battle for 80mins.
We don’t have a kicker who can kick deep and long like Moses or Fogerty to get us out of trouble either.

It’s interesting that this thinking of smaller players extends over years and a number of different coaches … to me it’s a game based on physicality and intimidation and size is obviously a big part of this…

One of the ex- coaches Madge went out and picked big and aggressive guys when he was Origin coach … and they won the series …maybe he learnt a lesson when he was here ?
