Benji Marshall has recalled the day his mate Chris Lawrence suffered a horror facial injury.
Seventeen months ago Chris Lawrence sat on a Whangarei training field in New Zealand struggling to breathe and choking on his blood.

West Tigers veteran Benji Marshall motions to his throat as he tries to describe the cackling sound Lawrence made every time the forward tried to take another breath.

“It’s the worst injury I have ever seen, ever,” Marshall said.

“Without bringing back too many bad memories or make it too gory but he was sitting there choking on his own blood waiting for an ambulance trying to keep himself calm.

CHRIS LAWRENCE: FACIAL INJURIES

- Broken jaw

- smashed nose

- busted eye sockets

- broken cheekbones

- collapsed palate

- dislodged teeth

Required eight plates to put his face back together that won’t ever be removed

“Man, the ambulance took an hour.

“He was sitting there in shock, his body shaking. There was nothing we could do.

“I swear to god, there was a chance he could have died.

“You could hear the blood, the blood man, in the back of his throat … I lost my shit, I was crying. I was rattled, I was rattled for two or three weeks.”

A shocking head clash with Ben Matulino left Lawrence with injuries so severe his face had caved in. Specialists at the time likened the impact to a car accident.

Other Tigers teammates say it was almost like Mautalino’s head was imprinted into the face of Lawrence.

Benji's milestone games:
* 50: 16-18 loss to Melbourne
* 100: 56-10 win over Cronulla
* 150: 32-18 win over Penrith
* 200: 18-32 loss to Souths

Chris' milestone games:
* 50: 40-24 win over Sydney
* 100: 17-16 win over Cronulla
* 150: 4-48 loss to Sydney
* 200: 26-16 win over Nth Qld

All the best for game 250...

Great discussion on Triple m this afternoon regarding Chris' 250th game, his sister went into a lot of detail about his injuries. Congrats Chris.

Picked up a minor knee complaint tonight too I think. Madge indicated he was struggling with something during the game.

Lawrence.

Both tried Chris was the better of the 2 but i cant see a place for either next year.We have to improve sentiment shouldnt come into it

I would take Lawrence again next year as a depth player on a couple of conditions:
- we are able to clear out some dead wood and therefore have a number of roster spots to fill, allowing an influx of fresh blood
- he is on close to minimum contract.

When you look at what is available for next year there is not a lot of improvement there. When you look at who we have off contract I would be prepared to release McQueen, ET & Seyfarth before him.

I certainly agree with McQueen and ET.Seyfarth is young and maybe worth persevering with he has had very little time in the NRL.

Not in a million years.

McIntyre is our Lawrence for next year. Garner is our bench back rower.

No space for Lawrence, McQueen, ET. Probably not for Eiso or Seyfarth either.
