This week's RLW reports that Royce has flown to England this week to interview for the coaching job at St Helens. If successful he'll be out of here next year.

For Royce sake, it would be good to see him have another chance to coach a first grade team.
he has too look after his future as well.
if he is successful and does get the job, then good on him, and wish him all the best.

If he does go he'll improve Tigers future too!
A win all round…

**Simmons favourite for Saints top job**
Published Date: 30 June 2010
Australian Royce Simmons has emerged as a frontrunner to replace Mick Potter at Saints for next season.
The former Hull player is currently the assistant coach at Wests Tigers and is understood to be keen on a return to Super League.
>
It is believed Simmons is currently holding talking with officials at Saints.
>
A former Test hooker, Simmons played most of his career in the NRL with the Penrith Panthers. He also represented New South Wales.
>
Current coach Mick Potter announced he will return to his native Australia at the end of the season.

**Royce Simmons the surprising front-runner to take over at St Helens**
Royce Simmons has emerged as an unlikely favourite to become the new coach of St Helens next season. Simmons, the former Australia hooker who became a popular figure during two seasons in charge at Hull before the Super League era, has not held a head coaching job since he was sacked by the Penrith Panthers almost a decade ago.
>
He has, however, assisted the current Australia coach, Tim Sheens, at the Wests Tigers for the past seven years, and that experience is thought to have impressed Saints in their search for a successor to Mick Potter, who will return to Sydney at the end of this season.
>
Mal Meninga, a much better-known former Kangaroo who remains a cult hero in St Helens after the impact he made in a six-month stint with the club in the mid-80s, had also been linked with the vacancy. But Meninga is happy in Australia, where he combines a number of business interests outside the game with the well-paid part-time position of coaching Queensland in the State of Origin series. Meninga retains a 100% record in that regard after the Maroons secured a fifth consecutive series victory this month.

Lets hope for Roycie's sake the Brittish press are just as reliable as the Sydney media…. 😛ray:

The British tabloids are prone to making up even bigger porkies than the Australian media but I'm with you on this one Geo, hopefully it's good mail for Royce.

Mal Meninga to knock back the job today and Royce Simmons will be announced as St. Helens coach shortly after.

Did Meninga apply or did Saints approach him?
I find it strange he would be job hunting in the middle of an origin series, a six or seven week period of the year where he has the rest of the year to pursue these things

Wests Tigers assistant coach Royce Simmons is hopeful he'll be appointed as the new boss of English Super League giants St Helens by next week.

With former St George Illawarra fullback Mick Potter leaving Knowsley Road to return to Australia at the end of the season, Simmons is the new favourite to take over as coach after meeting with club officials last week.

The 50-year-old has been Tim Sheens' No.2 at the Tigers for the past seven years, and his right-hand man with the Test side for 18 months.

However, Simmons believes the time is now right for him to return to a head-coaching role for the first time since leaving Penrith in 2001.

The former Kangaroos hooker enjoyed a two-year coaching stint with Hull in the early 1990s and reports in England said the Saints board were impressed with what Simmons had to say when they met last week.

"I flew over there for the weekend last week after our Friday night game," Simmons said.

"I met the CEO, the chairman and the football manager and it is a very professional set-up and I was really impressed with what they have over there.

"There is an impressive player recruitment scheme and also the youth policy and a very strong club.

"I came away from there hoping that I will pick up the job."

St Helens have a long history of employing Australian coaches with Parramatta's Daniel Anderson and former North Queensland boss Ian Millward both enjoying trophy-laden stints at Knowsley Road in recent years, and Simmons wants to add his name to their honours board.

"I have put it in the hands of my manager and he is looking after it with the St Helens club and we will hopefully have an answer by the end of the week," he said.

"I went over to Hull as a rookie in the 1992/93 season and I was it was great part of my apprenticeship and I still have a lot of friends over there and the experience of working there and with Tim Sheens has been invaluable."

Firstly let me say thank christ he is going,

Secondly I cant think of one good reason why they are after him.

Maybe the owners of St Helens have watched the broadway hit "The Producers" one too many times…..

Good luck Royce, i hope you get the position, but not for the reasons people are giving on this thread.

Agreed. He's served his apprenticeship under Sheens is ready for another crack. Good luck to him.

Good luck to him.

I think a positive for the Tigers there will be a strong relationship forged between the two clubs that would allow player mutually benificial recruitment and scouting info to shared

as well as allow for a new face in the assistant coaches box.

Heres hoping.

If Royce gets the job will he take any players with him?
He might even do some recruiting and send some players over here..

Royce is about to announce he is heading to Hull & not St Hellens either way he is off to the old dart 100%
Good luck Roycey!!!!!
