Rugby League immortal inspires our Under 20s
The Wests Tigers NYC team received a huge boost ahead of their Grand Final against the Raiders last Sunday at ANZ Stadium.
Coach Todd Payten arranged for rugby league legend Andrew Johns to speak to the team ahead of the big game and present each player with their jersey.
It was only just three days earlier that Johns had been announced as the eighth immortal and Payten said having him there really inspired his team.
“I got the boys one by one to tell the rest of the guys after they received their jersey what they were about to do for the team,” Payten said.
“Joey told the boys that no one has died on the footy field from being too tired. He said that you must push yourself the whole way or you will be found out.
“It worked in perfectly with what we (the Coaching staff) have tried to instil in our guys all year- never take a short cut defensively.
“He also spoke about keeping things the same as normal in your preparation. If you like to relax and have a joke beforehand then do it.
“He added that in big matches if his defence was aggressive, the rest of his game would flow on from there. He had the whole room captivated, staff included. I really can’t thank him enough for his contribution and time.”
Wests Tigers then went out and played the best game of their season according to Payten, to win 46-6, so Johns’ chat must have had the desired effect.
