Rumour - Steve Folkes a possible coaching contender

Saw a brief interview with Kevin Walters on Ch 7 News tonight. Pat Molihan asked him about the Tigers job, and rather than say something cliche like "oh mate, it's finals week, all I'm focused on is getting the Storm ready for Sunday", he said something along the lines of "I'm very open to an offer, I have strong aspirations of becoming a head coach one day". Read into it what you will but that looks like positive signs IMO. Half the job of appointing a new coach is to ensure mutual grounds and that they're as interested in the partnership as the club is.

Steve Folkes in my opinion would be a great choice for coach, but Mr Ball Main until you reveal your reliable source on this info we are just speculating about your information and this thread will end up like the Lote and Adam Blair threads 150thousands pages long, and I have just added to this[I'll give myself a wedgie]
I will not believe Steve Folkes will be appointed coach until the club appoints the new coach and releases the info.

Who put 20 cents in the rumour mill??????

This is NOT TRUE…I have it on good authority...He is sweating on the STGI position. Price won't last . And don't worry , being appointed St George Coach IS a big deal.and he wants it..

St George would be stupid to release Folkes. Steve Price had a terrible year, not only with on the field results, but in the way he's planned for 2012/13\. They've lost Hornby, Young and Scott, as well as promising juniors in Marketo and Buchanan. They have no halfback for next year, no recognised fullback, an ageing squad, and have made no real decent signings (the only signing I can think of is Gerard Beale). They missed the finals for only the second time since '04 (other time was in '07 - Brown was coach, wasn't he?! hmm…), and only two years after winning the premiership. If the Dragons don't start the season well next year I can totally see them sacking Price and promoting Folkes to head coach.

I'm hearing Folkes will be appointed coach. He is yet to be mentioned in the media but I hear that he is the preferred choice due to his knowledge of the club, his relationship with the senior players, his experience and more importantly his price which will be considerably less than what sheens was on.

Not sure re: Folkes. It seems all the older Coaches (Bennett,Smith and Sheens) all struggled this year. Is it safer to go with a younger applicant like Brown,Walters or Anderson?

I agree! I think we need someone younger with lots of hunger to be a successful, 1st grade coach. I'd go with Parish or Dymock

I'm just worried that he is past it, maybe a little stale for the head role. Thats just the vibe I get, he could be revitalised and ready to rip in.

Certainly wouldn't be afraid to be his own man and make the tough choices.

The Mole ‏@RLW_Mole
@Wests_Tigers LATEST: Momentum going with Nathan Brown, Matty Parish fading. Can they get anything right???

No idea of source or momentum of rumour???

But hoping it has legs.

And the merry-go-round continues to spin…Folkes might be alright, he'd certainly have the players in shape and I get the impression he wouldn't tolerate as much crap as Sheens would. I'll re-name the title of the thread too.

I tweeted the Mole and NRLNews (not sure how reliable their sources are) and have confirmed that Jim Dymmy is not even in contention.

The mole is the biggest media myth you will ever meet.

His tweets go something like this:

"3:50pm Tuesday: Just spoke with TigerTim, he hasn't quit or been sacked"

"4:05pm Tuesday: Don't believe the lies, my mate TigerTim was SACKED!"

Odd I have been told he is keen & seems to have the Tigers players support because they know & respect him.

Why would we go with Nathan Brown? He was terrible at the Dragons, I think Steve Folkes would be excellent he certainly knows how to make them train hard and get them in condition. He seems alright with people skills as well.

In all fairness he was only 29 when he started at St George and in 6 years he only missed the finals twice. Not too bad for a rookie coach. Took Huddersfield to the challenge cup final in his first year as coach overseas as well. I think a lot of the criticism on Brown is a tad unfair.

You call a couple pre-lim finals terrible? gee whiz

Yeah I s'pose. Do you think that coaching in England would be easier than coaching here??? I don't know, just asking, don't get upset or anything.

I think most people remember Brownie as the guy who slapped Barrett on the field. He had some success with Dragons but many of their fans think they should have walked away with at least 1 premiership with the team they had during that period.

I spent so long trashing Dragons and Brownie during that time, it seems weird that he is now a leading contender to coach us. I am coming around to the idea though.
