Rumour - Steve Folkes a possible coaching contender

It doesn't worry me that Nathan Brown has been linked to the Tigers, gee god knows some of our players could do with a good slapping.

This is NOT TRUE…I have it on good authority...He is sweating on the STGI position. Price won't last . And don't worry , being appointed St George Coach IS a big deal.and he wants it..

Odd I have been told he is keen & seems to have the Tigers players support because they know & respect him.

that may have been the case 3 weeks ago, but alot has changed.
im pretty sure if he was offered a fulltime gig at the tigers vs assistant at dragons, he would head to the tigers.

If they decide on a senior coach , he would be my choice , but he won't come if Sheens is stil at the club

Absolute recipe for disaster

Can you imagine it , Benji finishes training and goes to speak to Sheens to have a whinge about Folkes Bloody ugly situation if you ask me and for Folkes it would be lose lose

Hope if Folkes comes he becomes our defensive coach and gets someone as the attacking coach

Fittler might be a good choice for that role , if Walters was interested he also would be handy

The Tigers need the Dogs of War mentality

I thought they flicked Folkes because he trained them too hard?. While on that i thought we started the season a bit under done.

Listen WT fans, Folkes showed the club what is needed for our club to be a contender, what made the dogs tick and what it takes to win premierships. Two years running we were just off. So then the boys want him out because he's running them into the ground. Well if Folkes does coach and they don't like it, go join Sheens. Ask any athlete at the top of their sport, they all say the same, hard work, long hours and no short cuts.

No Dragons offered more and it was closer to his home. Straight from horses mouth. He loved his time here

Why would we go with Nathan Brown? He was terrible at the Dragons, I think Steve Folkes would be excellent he certainly knows how to make them train hard and get them in condition. He seems alright with people skills as well.

In all fairness he was only 29 when he started at St George and in 6 years he only missed the finals twice. Not too bad for a rookie coach. Took Huddersfield to the challenge cup final in his first year as coach overseas as well. I think a lot of the criticism on Brown is a tad unfair.

Yes I agree. He is a much better coach now than he was at 29\. He was set a very tough task for a guy with minimal experience to coach a team containing players who were older than him and/or former team-mates.

Postives for Folkes:
Our defense will improve
He has no ego….anyone who coached as long as he did and then is willing to take an assistant role behind a very young and unproven coach shows a guy who is willing to get the job done without any fuss. It isnt about him, which is great.
He would make the tough calls.

Negatives:
Football seems to follow trends, and at the moment older coaches seem to be struggling to move ahead with the game.
It was reported that Folkes wasnt a great tactician, so his assistant would have to be the man to run our attack

Not a big negative if he isn't a great tactician, when you have Benji and Robbie in your side you don't need to much help with attack.

He wasn't all ego when he took a knee from Graham Wynn in the Saints v Bulldogs grand final. Went on to finish the game. Don't ask me who won.

Steve Folkes please. He's perfect.

He joins Wests Tigers as Assistant. Suddenly we're a top 4(ish) club make finals 2 years running…
He leaves Wests Tigers.. well, erm.. ummmm...lol.

He's from the awesome Warren Ryan school of good footy coaches. He knows the players, he knows the culture, he has the authority to speak as a premiership winning coach. He developed perhaps the most feared and lethal forward pack in recent memory. He got the forwards playing so well at the doggies in 2004 he won a premiership with Brent Sherwin at Halfback. He'd get a lot out of Anasta for us too.

My gut feeling is that its gonna be Matt Parish. The more the merrier with the ex Balmain Brigade. Someone who is easy to control and sympathetic to the Orange Side of the family. Its not a healthy option in my Opinion. We've got too many ego's and big time charlies to have a rookie coach.

I agree Steve Folkes is a great option.

If I was choosing its a battle between 3
1\. Steve Folkes
2\. Tony Smith
3\. Jason Taylor

Folkes would be perfect.

May Walters as assistance coach focusing on attack and developing young Miller at half.

We need a coach who is straight talking and came improve our defence.

Wouldn't think Walters would leave an assisstance coach at Storm to be an assisstant coach with us

I met Folkes at a ride day at Eastern Creek,he was very approachable and was willing to talk about anything, but I am leaning towards Brown or Anderson as they have no connection at all with us,but if Folkes get the gig I am still happy with that.
