Rumour - Steve Folkes a possible coaching contender

The club had its best performances for sometime while Folkes was at the club. He leaves and the next season is a struggle. I think he could get good results and would be a sound replacement. The least risk I would think.
 
I think way too much gets made of Folkes being a contributing factor for us making the top 4\. If he was that much of a factor Saints would have finished in the 4 this yr. What people forget is the two yrs he was here we had a halfback, yet this yr when we didn't have one we struggled. I don't mind seeing him being appointed but people do get carried with the amount of praise they give him for 10-11

A lack of halfback was definately a factor, and there were a few other factors too. But our defence was so much more certain in the years Folkes was at the club.
 
Also the dragons were the 4th best defensive side in 2012 (only 3 points behind manly in 3rd). So thier struggles were because of a lack of attacking skills in thier players something we don't struggle with. Folkes too coach and be defensive coach and then have a good assitant to do the attacking.

Well, considering St George earned their infamous tag as 'chokers' when Brown was at the helm doesn't fill me with too much confidence. He has never really struck me as as really good coach. He had a star-studded team for the few years he was there, who were at unbackable odds to win the comp, but they only achieved it when he left and Bennett took over. Still, I'm sure the players know better - they seem to be pushing for him. At this point I'll be happy with anyone who **isn't** Sheens lol.
 
Another + for Folkes. But please give Tod Payten a role in the setup.
When Folkes was with us we had a spine!

have u read my previous threads about the tigers needing to get of hino beau ashy ford sheens and Lote. Lote was the only one I was wrong on and trust me the deal was never have meant to go through. The players want folkes. So take a deep breath and enjoy the ride

Luke Lewis ring a bell ball main Weren't quite right on that either

Hear rumours all the time about the club and you sit on them until you get a viable source thats has the true mail

For example , I sat on a Benji going to the Broncos for a few weeks and had a few "reliable "sources , but until I got it from someone big I sat on it Mentioned it to a few on here who might be in the know , but it crashed and died as quickly as it started
 
Not that fussed on Folkes but would not be to worried if was given the job… Getting a bit of yesterday's hero about him.

Whoever the coach is, he needs to be a 'cool head' guy. The Tigers are already an overly emotional group, prone to overexcitement or football depression from week to week.

They need a calming influence, a level head. This is my concern on a Bellamy or Stuart type coach- if they can't control their emotions, how do Benji, Farah, Blair etc keep their calm?

Folkes seems level headed. Matt Elliott too. Parish is reportedly a bit firey, and Walters is a clown- not sure they fit. Georgiallis might be a better fit than those two. Brown is a little 'heart on the sleeve' too. Rick Stone probably is the right temprement.

Don't think Stone is a contender. Shame, did better with a weaker roster than Bennett did.

Sounds like they need a shrink rather than a coach.

We have Matt Parish going to Parramatta as an assistant coach, Nathan Brown is contracted to St Helens, Matt Elliott has been linked to the NZ Warriors and Kevin Walters tipped to stay at the Storm.
As Sheens is apparently not prepared to stay on in a mentoring role this leaves Tod Payten out as he's only one year oout of retirement, there's no news that Danial Anderson is interested and the only possible other candidate is still contracted to the Dragons, I was on another forum earlier and a tongue in cheek poster suggested Phil Gould!.
So it looks like we'll end up with a rookie coach, maybe Leo Epifania with Paul Fletcher as assistant, moneys tight eh!.

Surely Doust would find it in the goodness of his heart to release him early to link up with Humphreys.
 
Brown has a get out clause to come back and coach in the NRL and Melbourne have said they wouldn't stand in the way should Walters be offered a head coaching role

6 pages and it's still just conjecture. In any case, it doesn't matter who is selected, they are going to have to be a man manager and disciplinarian. Someone who can snap the group out of the "here for fun" mentality and treat it like the profession that they're paid handsomely for (in comparison to us peasants.) They will have to go about it carefully though, as too strong a culture shift could cause him to lose the dressing room and we can't afford to pay out two coaches at the same time, we'll go close to the razors edge just paying out Sheens.
