Ryan Cross may still be a tiger in 2012

The following article clears up some of the confusion on this board re; Ryan Cross discussions. He is only signed to French rugby until October to cover for French players involved in RWC. He has no contract and no commitments for 2012\. If he is cheap, no a bad backup option IMO. He is very experienced, professional, tough and durable. His criticism of Robbie Deans probably indicates he has given up on representative rugby.

RYAN CROSS has offered a not so fond au revoir as he heads for France by describing Wallabies coach Robbie Deans's selection policy as failing to respect Australia's older and experienced players.

Cross, 31, leaves Sydney tomorrow to start a three-month deal to cover for Perpignan's injured Jean-Philippe Grandclaude and David Marty and Maxime Mermoz while they are in New Zealand with the French World Cup team.

While Cross insisted he had ''let go'' of the disappointment at being left out of the national squad, he expressed frustration at being overlooked despite displaying good form for the NSW Waratahs in the Super Rugby competition.

''I sort of let go of it a bit,'' he told The Sun-Herald. ''Robbie's selection policy is a bit … confusing. I think a lot of the older blokes have been a little bit hard done by, to be honest. There hasn't been a lot of respect for the older players and I think a bit of experience has been wasted. I think experience has proven in the past to be important [in World Cup campaigns]. South Africa won it last time and England made [that] final with a lot of experienced players, and they won the previous one. Australia also had a lot of experience when we won the World Cup back in 1999.''

Cross, a former rugby league player who scored four tries in eight Tests after he switched codes in 2006, returned to Sydney from the Western Force this year to push his case for World Cup selection because he felt ''out of sight, out of mind'' playing for the Perth team.

When Cross decided to play for the Waratahs he admitted he had ''rolled the dice'' because he was not guaranteed much playing time in the star-studded line-up.

However, he was happy with his season and even felt as though he was ranked among the form centres. Cross, whose father, Paul, played league for Balmain in the 1960s, said he could return to rugby league next season after a series of ''encouraging'' negotiations with the Wests Tigers.

''I'm still talking to [coach] Tim Sheens at the Tigers,'' Cross, who played eight years for the Sydney Roosters, said. ''They've been really good; very transparent about where they stand next year.

''I'd like to go there. It's a good club and they've been very professional to deal with. While I have no contract for next season there are a few doors still open to me.''

Cross is contracted to Perpignan, in the beautiful south of France, until October and is looking forward to wearing the club's tradition-steeped blood-red and gold jumper.

''I'm looking forward to going; I wanted to get over there and to have a shot,'' Cross said. ''What to expect? I don't know. I just wanted to play some footy.

''I still have some good years left in me and I look forward to playing in a good [French] team. As it stands I have no deal for next season, and the reason I'm going to play in France is because I don't have to worry about next year yet.

''I'll go over to experience life in France with my family. I understand Perpignan is a great spot, I'm going to play in a good competition and I'll see how it goes. There's a lot to be excited about. I expect the language barrier will be the toughest … I'll need to get used to the team's calls.''

Sounds pretty promising doesn't it?

If he does the three months in France he will back about the same time as pre-season training commences.

Does anyone know whether he has the speed required nowadays? If he has then he would be a handy backup, look at Utai and how he has played regular first grade after he initially came to the club as a backup.

Its 99% that he will be playing league next year. Its either us or another Sydney club but more likely for the tigers.
He has been offered a pretty good contract to play union in England but his young family does not want to relocate for the 3rd time in 3 seasons.Unless the English contract is to good to refuse of cource, everyone has a price. So its either play league or quit pro sports for good.

And once again IF he plays for us it will NOT be for big money as he has already secured a well paying job that is not related to league

JOURNEYMAN!! Why are we investing our time, money and effort in 32 year old's who haven't played the game for 6 years!! Get serious guys, we don't need him!

id be very shocked if he came for much money at all

personally i dont mind it, much like utai he'd mainly be there for a fill in. while i always thought he seemed like a tool theres no denying he was a top player when firing. as has been seen with lote union doesnt exactly harm the body. being a 31 year old union player is like being a 27 year old league player.

our center depth is looking a bit shaky next year imo. cant imagine daniela and brown being resigned and from what ive been told reddy is going to get first shot at 1\. simona didnt over impress me in first grade and nofalama is still a few years away.

I just dont see the need for him in the backs…looks like we have made a couple good signings in reddy grant...time will tell....i would much prefer a specialist FB or prop

Id be happy to give him a chance. But would prefer Lawrence and Ayshford as starting centres. Having Ryan Cross as backup is great depth.

I didn't mind the idea at first (of signing Cross) but lately I can't shake the image of the Eels signing Paul Whatuira, Chris Hicks and Chris Walker to play this year (Whatuira and Walker having recently retired after struggling to get on the park and perform once there).

Doesn't mean that because these three have struggled, the same fate would await Cross's return, but it does seem like a potentially unfortunate comparison.

I wasn't overly keen on us signing Cross, at first, but now the idea has grown on me a bit. Better to have too much depth in the three quarters, than not enough. We won't have Moltzen next year and perhaps not Brown either (and he is more suited to fullback than centre, in any case). Ryan Cross is a very experienced, rep standard player - he may just go ok.

Not so keen on this signing. There are few older players who are performing. It really does seem to be a young man's game nowadays.

I seriously don't see the reasoning behind it. The only thing I can think of is that Tim is scared of another injury riddled season next year and is looking for proven quality players to step in. Cross was the most underrated center playing when he was at the Roosters, he was a dangerous player. Whether he still has that ability and aura is something that remains to be seen.
