**Ryan Tandy found guilty**

Former Canterbury front-rower Ryan Tandy has been found guilty of conspiring to gain a financial advantage for others by manipulating the first scoring play in a rugby league match.
Tandy was not found to have placed a bet on last August's Bulldogs versus North Queensland Cowboys match in Townsville, but evidence showed he had been in regular contact via telephone with others who had placed bets, leading up to the match and again after the match.
Tandy was placed on 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $4000\. Tandy's legal team immediately confirmed that they would be launching an appeal.

The Herald first revealed the NRL's investigation into the betting plunge last August.
Magistrate Janet Wahlquist said she was not convinced of Tandy's claim that he had repayed $30,000 in gambling debts before the August 21 game, in which he played a prominent role for the Bulldogs.
She concluded he had been involved in two key plays in the opening minutes of the match that presented the opportunity for North Queensland to score first with a penalty goal.
She said there was evidence that Tandy's manager Sam Ayoub was "telling people it was a sure thing" and that there was a clear plan to try to manipulate the first scoring play.
Tandy was found guilty of attempting to gain financial advantage for others for the sum of $113,345 from Tabcorp.

Ms Wahlquist said the evidence against Tandy was circumstantial but there had to be a high probability that it supported the prosecution's case.

The NRL has reaffirmed that it will impose life bans on any persons convicted of ‘match fixing’ in a statement released after the Tandy verdict.
In relation to today’s court decision, the NRL notes there are a number of other legal matters still to be heard in connection with this investigation.
Given the time of the season and the imminent nature of those hearings, the NRL will reserve imposing any penalties on any person found guilty of fixing any part of a match until such time as those matters are resolved.
“Clearly there remain some complex legal arguments to be heard and the rights of individuals through that process must be respected,” NRL chief executive, David Gallop, said today.
“The outcome for anyone found guilty of interfering with a match for any improper purpose could not be more apparent.
“From the outset, the NRL has involved independent investigators and sought the assistance of the NSW Police in dealing with betting irregularities around the first scoring option in this match and we remain convinced that was and remains best course of action.
“We welcome the assistance of the authorities in treating these matters seriously and look forward to the conclusion of all proceedings.
“We also welcome Federal and State Governments’ recognition of the importance of giving sports the legislative support and regulatory assistance in dealing with sports betting issues.
“We look forward to seeing these policies finalised across all states."

You reap what you sow. Wonder what the likelihood of him going for a stint in the clink is?

He's looking at 5 years for lying to the police.

Bogan If they gave 5 years to everyone who lied to police they would need to build about 40 new prisons
EG "Have you been drinking tonight"
"No sir"
"Cause this breathalyser sample says .15"
Suspended licence 6 months $1000 fine and 5 years for lying to police
He'll get no punishment for lying to police imo

I know the likelihood is slim to FA Happy, just saying he is looking at a possible maximum 5 years for giving dud statements to police.

Sorry Bogan wasn't having a shot at you but was aiming at our legal system
Another thread perhaps

That's a pretty small fine. What was the payoff from the bet if he didn't get caught?

His problem concerned lying to the NSW Crime Commission rather than the police didn't it?

Thought the same thing. It seems odd he did all this to cover a 35k debt. I know it's not a insignificant amount but given the way his career was going you'd think he could have made enough to may that off. I guess gamblers always want to quick and easy way out.

In a more serious criminal matter such as this, lying to the police is a bigger issue as it creates more inefficiency than a case where its something small like a drink driving offence.

Has he been charged with lying to the police? He's been charged with lying to the NSW Crime Commission.

Yeah, you're right Yoss.

Apologies.

it doesnt sound like they have proof that he did it

The proof was established that's why he was convicted however he is going to appeal so we'll see what a Judge thinks, there is a remote possibility that he could get an increased sentence, but he could also get off or have the 'sentence' reduced.

although there is no solid proof you'd be pretty naive to assume that nothing went down. Even if he's found not guilty on appeal I think his career in the NRL is over.
