SalaryCap for Young Players

I've never really thought of this in the past, but think perhaps guys 21 and under or maybe even 23 and under, should have a limit to what can be offered to them contract wise. (A cap within a cap) The latest Tedesco Fiasco is reason enough for the NRL to consider the fairness of a player being poached by others. After the amount of work Wests have put into this guys learning of the game and injury management to then have him ripped from their grasp by a club with massive bucks to spend is nothing short of ridiculous. If he was offered the maximum amount by his current club as opposed to the maximum from another, then only conditions outside of money could sway the decision making from someone so young. It's time to allow clubs a fair and reasonable opportunity to hang onto their investment. This would also allow older clubmen the ability to remain where both they, and the club want them to - at home.

Interesting idea, could definitely see some value in it. What about the likes of Lawrence though who had already been in the NRL for five or so years by the time he turned 23 and had also played for his country/been earmarked as a long term international? It would be hard to deny the likes of him more money than say a Tedesco or Brooks, who have the raps without the runs on the board so to speak. Maybe that could be incentive bonuses or match payments from rep games?
May have some trouble with the RLPA too I'd say.

Irrespective of ability, or potential ability, a cap of say 4 or 500k would be more than fair in my opinion for a young guy. Wasn't that long ago that under 23's were considered boys. Having a cap such as this isn't going to stop kids from playing. I reckon pretty much every one would jump at the chance of signing for those kinds of dollars, but would get rid of stupidity such as that shown by the Raiders and the greed shown by Tedesco and his advisors along with as I said before, would give more opportunity to provide funds for long term servants such as the likes of the Peteros, Kites, Stewarts etc.

It's not going to happen. No governing body has a right to restrict the amount of money an individual can earn.

Happens in the use eg NFL -they have a salary cap and also limit initial rookie contracts. The zero's are different due to the size of the market but the concept is the same

Player mangers have a lot to answer for with regard to inflated player payments maybe they should be put on some sort of cap as to how much they can earn as well.

If you're good enough to be offered so much money best of luck too you!

Restriction of earning capacity is not the answer as this theoretically may force young athletes away from Rugby League as you can only earn this much lets go to AFL where I can earn X dollars without a ceiling….

Transfer fees and monetary reward for developing juniors need to be seriously looked at and implemented as soon as practicable to lessen the negative emotional outfall we experienced this week. Nothing new here just make it happen NRL.

Teddy is gone at the end of the year!

Time to build a bridge and get over it!

Im well over Tede$co - don't get me wrong. But, I just think that a short term restriction could be in the best interests of all involved. Once you're 23, you can earn as much as the market can dictate. That gives you a good ten years or thereabouts to earn your $800k if you're good enough.

Tede$co is going to have the weight of the world on his shoulders now although, perhaps hes too young to realise it. If he gets injured again, or if he doesn't live up to expectations,, then he'll cop a lot more from Raiders fans than he has already form Tigers fans. This couldn't be good for him mentally. Restricting income is allowed as it already is the case with the existing cap. Suggesting that a young league player might turn to another code isn't realistic in the grand scheme of things. There's a massive difference between the codes and those that love league aren't going to head down another path just because they can't earn over $400 - $500k per season. That is the stuff dreams are made of for a young guy. But When you start heading towards a mill, things are getting stupid on all levels.
