Severe Cyclone Ita Cat 5

Just want to send a cheerio out to all of our FNQ brethren to stay safe and dry with the oncoming threat of Cyclone Ita

Just been upgraded to Category 5 and luckily for the people the Cyclone is moving far quicker than it was originally

It was moving only at 10 km/h but has sped up to 18km/h speeds with wind gusts of up to 285km/h

The only two from the Forum that I know of are Stryker and Poppa but if there are more out there let us know

Two of my best mates are up that way for 9 days R and R with their families.

Should have stayed in Sydney it seems.

Hi guys, I'm up in Cairns. Its starting to get a little gusty. Its going to get pretty hairy I think. I feel for those where Ita will cross, by the time it reaches us it will hopefully be a catagory 3.

Welcome to the Forum mate ,keep dry and stay safe

Looks like Cairns might miss the main brunt at this stage , but Cape Flannery or Cooktown might be under threat

Cooktown is a beautiful little town , hope it misses any populated areas

Don't know about becoming a Cat 3 ,maybe a Cat 4 when it crosses

Are you a Qlder as well Pratator ??

Yep, I'm from Cairns, was a Magpies fan from when I started watching footy, now a proud Tiger. From previous experience, once the cyclones hit the coast they seem to lose intensity pretty quickly but this one is moving a bit differently so who knows. As long as everyone stays safe thats the main thing. Preparation is obviously important. I work in a shopping centre so i saw plenty of panic buying. Tomorrow will be crazy.

Sorry Pratator thought you meant when it actually crosses the coast

The concern is it is slowing again down to 15 km/h

To give you an idea what I mean ( to the NSW people who don't have to deal with these babies ) Cyclone Tracy was only a mid range Cat 4 but was only traveling at around 7-8 km/h when it hit Darwin The longer it is in the hit zone the more damage it does

Cyclone Yasi was moving at 23kmh when it crossed

Our mate in Rocky (CQ ) might have some issues in a about 10 days as well with the flooding

The Fitzroy has the largest catchment area of any river in the southern hemisphere and if this low continues south after it hits the coast they will gets heaps of water coming down
 
I live in cairns, but I was at leichhardt on Sunday, so compared to those conditions the cyclone should be sweet.
 
Haha :slight_smile: Lucky!! The last Tigers game I saw live was the trial against Parra at Blue Tongue a couple of years ago. Lovely night but crap getting a taxi.

Possibly except for the fact the rain might hang around a touch longer

The storm surge will happen around the same time as the high tide which will be a concern as well ,fortunately the tides aren't big at the moment
 
big system, moving slow [11kms now] will cause some damage… Hope everyone has plenty of Water and Batteries.... They are suggesting over a week of heavy rain as far south as Bundaberg!

Bloody Fruit & Veg will go through the roof now...

Telstra is sending Fuel trucks to ensure generators are full along with setting up Mobile Comms towers in the region as I type.

SMS from my mate says weather is actually OK at the mo up in port D.

Ask him in 12 hours time what he thinks of the weather 😱pen_mouth:

This thing is doing its best to try and turn south and if it does things could get very bad for Cairns and Port Douglas

If it maintains 10 kmh speed it will flatten whatever it hits

Just had a look at the projections and they are saying it will cross back on to water somewhere around Townsville at 5.00 am Sunday morhing

Bloody rain .I'm sick of mowing the lawn weekly :brick:

So sad for the residents of Cooktown , its a beautiful little town of about 3000 people but from what I saw many of the places are pre 1985 and many won't withstand a Cat 4-5 Cyclone

From a football prospective this will unite the Cowboys like nothing else could , they will want to win this for their supporters
 
She's starting to get a bit wild now….spent the day cleaning out the yard and getting ready for her...got 3 cartons on ice, should get us through the next 24 hours or so. Feels like it is going to be a belter. Was going fishing tomorrow, may have to postpone LOL....
 
I hope it's not a repeat of cyclone Tracy that really belted darwin in '74\. 😛ray:
