Wests Tigers NYC Captain Shaun Spence has showed his leadership qualities off the field in recent months by helping young children with their reading.
Shaun has fast become a favourite amongst children at Exodus Foundation Intensive Reading Centre, attending one day a week over the last term. He often brings along a guest player to surprise the kids.
Each week the children have been working well in class and those making the most improvements get the chance to sit down and read with Shaun and the guest player. Shaun often gets there early to play handball and chat with the children.
“I went there once to help out and found I had a connection with the children and the teachers so I decided to say on,’’ Spence said.
“You can see the improvement in the children. Every week I go back, they need less and less help.”
As part of the program, Shaun along with new Fijian Under 20s recruits Taqele Naiyaravaro and Marika Koroibete ran a footy clinic for the children at Bicentennial Park, Glebe, last week.
The clinic was held on the last day of the first term and gave them a chance to impress the players with their skills.
Exodus Foundation takes in around 30 children every semester into their intensive reading program. The children involved are in Years 5 and 6 and have fallen behind in reading skills, some by up to 3 years and are at risk of dropping out of school due to troublesome behaviour and poor results. The children are picked up from their schools and taken to Exodus everyday for two terms of intensive reading. At the end of the semester they are up to speed with reading and back in their normal classes with many gaining substantially improved grades.
Shaun has continued the great work at Exodus Foundation through the ‘Read with Wests Tigers’ program that was started in 2010 with Aaron Woods being the main spearhead.
Exodus Foundation are one of Wests Tigers Premium Charity Partners in 2011 along with Children's Cancer Institute Australia and Men of League Foundation.
