Sheens' 2010 Selections

I've noticed this year Sheens has called up no U20s players, rather selecting players from the State Cup when injuries have hit.

Last year we saw the debut of Ayshford, Dwyer and Lui from the U20s with Tagive also given a fair run before struck down by injury. However this year, correct me if I'm wrong, but no U20s players have played first grade?

This year, Latu, Waters, Meaney, Lazarus have made their club debut coming from the State Cup, with Josh Davis being named 18th man on two occasions.

Anyone have any idea as to why Sheens has changed his selection policy? Just seems like a real big contrast from last year.

Given time in first grade, a lot of our U20s juniors have become regular first graders. In our top 17, Moltzen, Ayshford, Lui, Dwyer and Fifita have all come through our system. Add Tagive, Mataka and Jason Schirnack to the list who've made first grade and that's a pretty good strike rate.

Well the 20's have failed to make the 8 this year, and with long term injuries to guys like Woods and Mullaney who may have otherwise got a look in, I think it was always going to be a stretch for anyone to get a call up this year.

True. Given Dwyer was on fire last year, his call up was warranted. Same with Lui. But BRET and the Magpies were still travelling really well last year. Good to see that Sheens hasn't forgotten about them.

Sheens selections in general have improved overall as he is picking sides with more size… I have overall been impressed with the make up of his teams this season compared to previous and actually warmed to the idea of his back on the bench as it has came in handy at times.. We also have depth in all positions for the fist time ever. The reason i think he has been looking at state cup players over u20s is because he seems to want experience over youth this season as we have a lot of youngsters in the top 17 playing.

I've generally been happy with his selections too. Although I'd prefer the 'back' on the bench to be someone like Flanagan who can fill in at centre as most of the guys in our backline can cover numerous backline positions.

Sheens selections have improved this year considerably. I think the major reason for the improvement though is no John Morris.

Have been surprised that Schirnack hasn't been called up considering he played a little last year and was real solid. I think he could have used the State backs a little more, anyone instead of Fitzhenry in the last half of this year. Still, our depth throughout the grades is a real asset to our club.

Schirnack has spent a large part of the season injured. If he was fit and in form at the time Skando was called up it may have been different, but that's football.
