SHEENS CONFIDENT LOTE TUQIRI WILL PROVIDE VALUE FOR MONEY
By Wayne Cousins
Friday, 5 February 2010

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens admits Lote Tuqiri is value for money but has issued a warning not to expect too much too soon from the new recruit.

The dual international signed a three-year deal in England this week to join the Wests Tigers.

His impending arrival has already led to an increase in membership and interest from prospective sponsors.

“Lote is a long way from being back in the NRL and back to playing brilliant footy,’’ Sheens said.

“We have got a fair bit of work to do in how long will it take him to fit in and pick up the pace of the NRL as he has been out of it for a few years.

“That’s why I am positive about the three years. We will look at bringing him back up to speed, getting him to know the guys and getting to know the language of the club as far as our plays are concerned.

“It will take a bit of time so having a three year deal is an advantage for us. Overall, I think we will get very good value for money back over that period of time.”

Whilst acknowledging Tuqiri will add plenty of size and strength to the outside backs when he arrives after his stint with Leicester Tigers is completed, Sheens was more immediately concerned about the recovery of powerhouse winger Taniela Tuiaki.

The Kiwi international has struggled since breaking an ankle in the round 24 loss to Parramatta last year.

“It is minor keyhole surgery to clean the joint out. It depends on what the specialist finds and how Taniela reacts is going to be the issue,’’ Sheens said.

“I am really not counting on him to start the season but how long he will be out for is speculation. And I am not going to speculate.

“We are hoping the surgery will clear up the ankle a bit more as he is struggling with it at the moment.

“I would have liked to have had Tuqiri and Tuiaki in the same team, rather than one replacing the other.

“Having big strong outside backs starting your sets off is more and more today an important factor in the game.”

Sheens said former Cronulla utility back Mitch Brown and ex Penrith back Geoff Daniela were in the mix to replace Tuiaki.

“Brown has been doing a great job out on the edge. He is a big kid with plenty of speed. He will keep the backs honest all year and he has the versatility to play centre and full-back himself,’’ Sheens said.

“Geoff Daniela is also going very well and I am very pleased with him.

“From the end of last season, we still have our centre pairings in Chris Lawrence and Blake Ayshford, there is our other winger in Beau Ryan, we have our full-back in Tim Moltzen and Benji Marshall is there at five-eighth. Robert Lui will probably start at half-back. I’m pretty excited about that group.”

Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah felt the buzz amongst the players knowing Tuqiri was coming.

“He is a quality player. I know he hasn’t played league for a while but he is a superstar and I am sure it is not going to take him long to make his mark back in rugby league.’’ Farah said.

“There will be an adjusting period. Lote is going to have to learn our plays and our team structure around here. It will take him a while to learn all that and to fit into the side.

“Once he does, he is one of those players who will hit the ground running.

“All of the boys are excited about him signing. I suppose if you ask a couple of the boys who play in the wing and full-back positions there is a bit of extra competition there for them.

“We all know that it is a great signing for the club on and off the field and there is great depth there for our squad. It is going to be a positive to have him here.”

Farah feels the team is set for a big season.

“Even before Lote signed, I was excited about the season ahead. Having him here makes it that little more exciting,’’ he said.

“We are going to have a decent backline and it will be pretty big in size with Taniela Tuiaki on the wing. Chris Lawrence and Blake Ayshford in the centres are not small in size either.

“We are going to have size right through our squad and that is something we have lacked in the past.

“I am sure Tim is up at 3am thinking about ways he can get Lote in the game. He never stops thinking about those sort of things.”

International second-rower Gareth Ellis echoed Farah’s comments, saying he too felt the signs were good for 2010.

“We are really confident about this year. The club has recruited very well and the squad is the strongest it has ever been,’’ Ellis said.

“The recent addition of Lote Tuqiri is a big boost for the club. He is a fantastic player and he will be a great addition. He will be one of those players everyone looks out for on the team sheet and I’m really excited about playing alongside him.

“Lote has experience behind him in that he has played for his country in two codes and has been playing around the world, so he is going to bring a lot to our game.”

this isnt good, look how inept lui was in his games for us a 7 last year, yeah i know hes only young and was thrown in the deepend, but its clear as day that moltzen is the best halves partner for benji, now moltz might not be the best half back we have, but the way he plays is the best option for our club.

5/5 when starting at 7 last year, thats a stat i like

with tui out and lote not coming for a few weeks the best option for us in the backs is

brown
ryan
ayshford
lawrence
daniella

benji
moltz

and when they come back

brown
lote
ryan
lawrence
tuiaki

benji
moltz.

having Lote at the club is exciting.
good consistent footy from all in the squad is required to have a formidable team.
yes season 2010 wests-tigers have size and depth, they are also gonna need grit in grinding out a win in the close games. hopefully this has been addressed in off season.

Inept is taking it way too far Ron Silva. Lui did a competent job - defended well, made few mistakes. There is a very good chance Lui will be a superstar in this game one day and when he is I look forward to pulling this one out of the archives. An off-season where he has trained day in and day out with the top squad will make a world of difference. Im actually EXCITED.

Plenty of senior players at the Tigers talking up Lui for this year, and so is the coach. Reckon he'll be in for a big one and surprise a few on here.

One of those who just loves to say told you so after bagging all season. What have you seen of Lui in pre season? obviously more than the coaching staff, they don't know what they are missing. He was thown in last year and still won 5 games. If you bother to read the comments over the past few weeks nearly all say he has trained the house down.

What the hell does this team have to do to convince some people or to start the season on a positive. Go a follow the chooks or would you rather go back to years of almost rans and follow a team that shows absolute no ambition what so ever. Yeah lets look back at the good old days of oh yeah bugger all.

I agree. Having the players talk up Lui over the off-season and telling him that he needs to start to talk more during the game is a good endorsement of his skillz.

It's a shame, I think Moltzen is a better half. Especially with that 5/5 stat (although that was with the mighty mouse too!) Plus him and Benji are room mates so they more than likely would have a good understanding to work in halves together.

The only reason why Moltzen will lose the role is because of his versatility. Oh well, fullback can be just as much of a play maker and I recall him running off a lot of Bunji's plays last year.

Don't give up hope guys…..Sheens is the master of smoke and mirrors...

Moltzen for 7 from the start....C'mon Tim ....you know it makes sense........

Moltzen @ no1 forsure

This way Tigers will have Moltzen, Lui and Benji on the park and AJ on the Bench

Thats some serious attacking options, Strike power all over.

This is not mentioning the Centres and wingers

for all of you attacking me, im saying lui doesnt compliment marshall, they are basically the same player, and what do you expect senior players to say about him, that hes crap and not doing well?

hes a good young talent but not FG material yet, moltzen has proven more then capable at 7 and IMO is a better attacking/defending player then lui at this point.

we cant afford a poor start to the season and who ever thinks at this current point in time that lui will be better at 7 then moltzen are crazy, there is no need for moltzen @ FB we have plenty of actual fullbacks who can play there, moltz is a half through and through and at this point is far superior and more competent to do the job then lui

yeah to many strike weapons though, farah benji and moltz is enough attacking power, you add arana and lui into it and you are gonna have to many players trying that big play which will lead to more errors

your rant has nothing to do with what i posted, and going on to say i should support another team because i said moltzen is a better half then lui is dumb. i dont care if lui has trained the house down, doesnt mean he can lead the team and do all the things a HB should do, IMO hes a mirror image of chris sandow at this point

Either Sheens is playing games or Lui has improved 250% in the off season. The training paddock is one thing playing in the NRL is a different story. from what i saw last year with Lui his D needs massive amounts of work he sometimes looked like he didn't want to commit to tackles or just threw an arm out just real lazy stuff.

I seem to recall that Lawrence was no great defender at one time. Players can learn. Lui is a great attacking player, can offload in traffic and is very strong. What's not to like?

Arana will be on the bench I think so more attacking flair there.

I personally would prefer Moltzen at half, but I guess if things work out with Lui in the half spot and Moltzen at FB, the prospect of Lote and TnT on the wings…... well it would be fairly daunting for the opposition with those 2 wingers

i disagree mate ayshford has to be there in the centres,i think his potential is enormous

I hope Lui goes well at halfback and keeps his position throughout this season,he has lots of class. However in this side Lui has a lot of experience around him to learn from.I notice Lui is down as 5/8 for the Mackay trial game…..
