Sheens had the answer under his nose

Most of this season when we have fallen apart we have looked to NYC for answers. Us as fans have pleaded that Sheens picks up some youngsters to make their debut - with nothing to lose with injuries hitting us left and right.
Now that Koribete has finally made his debut last week and scored 4 tries in one game, the media claiming that he is the answer, (which he could quite possibly be) does this now mean Sheens has turned a new leaf? Has he come to his senses and realised that the young blokes coming through the ranks are our future, and not in fact players to drop and let go? Sheens, our future isn't blooding current players into the different positions, I hope you have finally seen the light. Can we finally unleash the Tigers that we have seen in the past, and now, hopefully, for the future?

Actually the inclusion of Marika fits with Sheen's tendencies when calling up younger guys

Was Koroibete the answer during the opening 7 rounds when we were getting hammered?

The guy is still learning the game at a frantic pace, it seems naive to think we could have thrown him in for the first half of the season and had the same results.

I am also of the opinion that if Noafoluma (sp?) was fit there was a very good chance he would have debuted in front of Marika

Its strange, some people on this forum reckon Sheens doesn't promote enough young guys and others reckon Sheens promotes too early and wrecks their bodies.

2 extreme POVs on the same topic….

Starting Koroibete in 1st grade anything earlier than prior to the last 2 months would have not been right.

Other players in years gone by that should have had a go but never did have a genuine claim though.

I'm just hoping people on here aren't expecting Marika to play like that every week

He will have his good days and bad days still

Hopefully they will become less and less as his career goes on

That all very much depends on the player.

Lets take two flyers who have come through the ranks as examples in Marika & Peni Tagive.

Both extremely quick and hard running players who hit like a brick outhouse when the opportunity presents itself.

Peni had a classic sprinters physique and was very highly tuned and as such prone to twinges. He needed to bulk up early to keep his speed and be hard enough to play the game and as such this made his body more prone to injury because of his muscle structure etc.

Marika seems to have a more classic Fijian league player style of body which should serve him better.

BUT with his running style it is ankle and foot injuries the club has to watch.

That just my read

Time will tell.

But 4 tries is simply outstanding and it gives Benji another geniune finishing option.

Y'know what I like about you Spiro?

As a first time poster you were super-organised enough to set yourself up with an avatar BEFORE you started posting.. Thats really rare to find someone who actually does that…. Infact, thats the first time i've seen someone do that in ages...

If I didn't know any better, I would honestly think you have been here before....

Nofoaluma is better than Marika

If thats true, I can't wait to see both these guys progress over the next few years!

one thing it proved if benji actually had some players with real speed earlier on in the season as targets we may have a few more points on the board now

Sheens' caution in promoting young players goes right back to his early days as a coach - he's supposed to have held Greg Alexander back in reserve grade until Brandy scored 5 tries in one game. Then he promoted him to first grade!

His caution is born out really by the fact that many young players coming up suffer long term injuries - Tedesco, Siro Jr, Tim Moltzen, Lawrence, Benji, Groat, and so on. It is difficult to strike a balance between pushing them up and trying to protect the young player. I reckon Sheens' record is as good as anyone else's really.

Sheens has a huge history in bringing in youngsters. He selected Brandy in round 1 his first year out of school and he won the Dally M as a 20 year old. I think he selected a heap of young blokes in that same era.
At Canberra he picked heaps of teenagers that went on to win the comp together, Daley, Clyde, K Walters, Lazarus (i think he was still 19), Matt Wood.
At the cowboys he tried to select Josh Hannay so young they changed the rules!
At the tigers, Benji, Farah, Halatau, Collis, Lawrence, Dwyer, Jeffries plus many more were picked whilst teenagers.
Even his biggest critics cant accuse him of not giving youngsters a go.
Even this year he has picked 5 kids still eligible for NYC in NRL.

Well they signed him to a new contract recently so I guess that would make him apart of this "club"

I have heard that Marika was in line to debut earlier in the year. I think both are very good players, for mine Marika is a better winger however I think Nofoaluma will play NRL in the centres. If there was only the one wing spot available I would go for Marika.

Although we have had a real lack of speed and Marika would have been handy our real problems are all based around our defense and lack of go forward. Fix the defense and everything improves, but what I have seen over the past month or so gives me very little confidence

I think our attack is just as much a concern. We just haven't been able to score points this season. I think if the attack gets fixed the rest of it will take care of itself.
