SHEENS KEEN ON LUI FOR HALF-BACK
By Wayne Cousins
Saturday, 27 February 2010

Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens has given his strongest indication yet that Robert Lui will be the half-back for the opening round against Manly at the Sydney Football Stadium on Monday, March 15.

Following his side’s 36-12 victory over Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Bluetongue Stadium, Sheens revealed Lui was set to partner Benji Marshall in the halves. Marshall missed the trial win over the Sharks with a minor ankle injury. Wests Tigers got through the trial with no injuries.

Whilst Wests Tigers fans celebrated a win after a disappointing lost to the Sydney Roosters last Sunday, Sheens was not getting too carried away.

“We need to do a fair bit more before we are going to be happy,’’ he said.

“We got through this without injury and we are winning strongly so I suppose that’s something but I wouldn’t take too much from it.

“Last week, the Roosters threw plenty at us and we fell into a hole. The Sharks dropped a lot of ball and we started poorly. Had they had been stronger with the ball in the hand we would have been in a bit of trouble.

“At the end of the day, Robbie Farah and Robert Lui both played well. Lui did step up.

“Robbie was quiet last week but this week he was much better and he led the way today on the back of some pretty solid work from the forwards.

“He got a full 80 minutes, he was creative and he worried them .He was the difference in the game.

“At the moment, I would be looking at Tim Moltzen at 1 and Robert Lui and Benji Marshall in the halves. That would the logical thing and that’s probably where we are going to go at this stage. I know what I am going to do for game one pretty well.”

Farah said he was pleased with the intensity in the defence and the hunger shown by his side.

“We were disappointed with our attitude last week, we treated it like a trial and the Roosters came out and were a lot more hungrier than us and it showed in the end result,’’ Farah said.

“In terms of tonight, we saw it as a dress rehearsal for round one. We didn’t want to go into round one on the back of two poor performances so that was a lot better.

“I got more involved tonight and there were a few more opportunities around the ruck. I was disappointed with my own game last week so tonight gives me a bit of confidence going into round one.

“My preparation for this season has been second to none and I have given myself every opportunity to start playing well from round one.”

Farah said he was more than comfortable to have Lui at half-back with Tim Moltzen at full-back. His combinations with Lui were lethal at times.

“It was a good opportunity tonight for Robbie to take a bit more control with Benji not there,’’ Farah said.

“It was important for him to lead the team around the park and I thought he was great. He took the line on a lot more than he did last week and that is when he is at his most dangerous.

“He is pretty elusive on his feet and he is a strong little boy.

“We work hard on our combinations and our skill work. Tim loves being able to work those combinations especially around the ruck and Robbie has been there throughout the pre-season. He has trained at seven so it has given us plenty of time to work on those combinations.”

Lui said he was happy with his performance and went into the game with no illusions.

“I just wanted to play good footy. I didn’t have any thoughts about round one as you never know what is going to happen in football,’’ he said.

“I played pretty good. Tim told me after the game that I still have plenty of work to do on my defence and on my attack so I just have to work on that at training.

“I have learnt plenty of things from Robbie, Benji and even Moltz, who is one year older than me. What we do at training we bring it out to the field. I am just keen to play, that’s what footy is all about.”

I know some people aren't keen on Lui, but jeez we have some attacking ball players in the team. If they can all get it right we'll be very dangerous with Tuqiri, Tuiaki and Lawrence in the backs. Salivating for the start of the season!

Lui was very impressive tonight. Missed one tackle that almost led to a Sharks try (good old Luke Covell dropped an easy pass) but it was a decent attempt at tackle. He did almost miss the team bus at McDonalds on the way home though. Even so, despite him desperately searching the car park with his eyes he was nice enough to sign my jumper!

Classis Yossarian!

Poor bloke was looking pretty nervous for a few moments. The bus was right around the corner and he was the only one left in the store. I thought I'd have to give him a lift home at one stage

He showed how strong he is tonight for a half! He stood in a few tackles, and got a couple of offload away.

He is deceptively strong, pretty sure Farah mentioned it in one of the media reports. He offloaded in a 3 man tackle on the Sharks line which resulted in Mitch Brown's try and one of his breaks in the second half, he pushed through a couple of Sharks players in a good show of strength.

lui played 5/8 last nite which is natural pos , last week playin half didnt work n molts is no fb when will sheens ever play players in there right posititons , not lookin forward 2 round 1 with that team

I totally agree with gaggles, lui played at 5/8 and blitzed it but marshall already fills that position perfectly. So why when we have all this talent do we not have a true halfback? Yes moltzen was really good last year but sheens seems desperate not to play him in that role come round 1???? If we don't get half and fullback sorted early on we are just going to weaken our chances of making the finals. It just seems that by the end of the off season and the trials the club should have figured out who is playing what position and what is going to be the best combination. But rounds 1-4 look like they are going to be tests for different players. If Lui doesnt perform well at half round 1 ive no doubt moltzen will be rushed in and so on with different combinations just like Sheens did with Marshall at halfback last year…...

Its just a bit frustrating.

Go the Wests Tigers!

Well they HAVE decided what the best combination is. We just don't agree. They are sticking with Moltzen at 1 and Lui at 7\. Unfortunately.

lui and marshall DONT work great in the halves

Yea before the season even starts lets slam this potential halves pairing and not give it time to develop. Deadset do people remember Moltzens first half a dozen games in first grade? He was timid, prone to errors and looked out of his depth, then last eyar he exploded to the point where most people would list him as one of our most valuable assets.

Im not saying that 7.Lui 6.Benji is the answer. However i am willing to give them a chance to gel and form a good combination.

Did he play 5/8th or down the left in attack…..got me sctaching my head....Is a 5/8 in todays game someone who gets the ball off the halfback....or is it the number 6 on the back...

I'll support Lui if Sheens picks him at 7.....but he better be schooling him bigtime on how to ATTACK down the right hand side of the field.....otherwise he will keep getting in Benji's way....

MOLTZEN for 7......

Point 1: Moltzen was playing out of position in the centres when he started in first grade. His success came when he was moved to the halves.

Point 2: Why should we wait for Lui to develop when we have a half-back who already has, as you say, "exploded" and is "one of our most valuable assets"?

Point 3: People within the club have massive wraps on Lui, why wouldnt we want to develop a top class half to play along side Benji?

Point 4: Who do you put at fullback if Moltzen in playing half?

Geez, you guys are more experimental than Sheensy… Keep him in the halves, he had a awesome game against the sharkies. Plus, when there are calls about that he can't pair with Benji, that was 1 trial!!

Sheens knows what he is talking about.

I'm only a LITTLE concerned about him only being able to play right to left, but we will see after the first few rounds. Obviously using your left to right is harder when you are a right hander, but I'm sure the coaches are working on it with Lui... Or maybe he just had a ordinary game against decent opposition? The roosters did trounce the Eels too.

Lui looked good once again against crap opposition in the Sharks. Had a fairly decent game yesterday but was not outright targetted in defence by Stuart's instructions. Still got trapped too many times with the ball, but luckily for him he was able to offload it a few more times this week. Tends to hold the ball too long.
