Simple solution is to increase the distance required. 20? 30?

Regardless of the distance kicked, most drop returns make it back to the 35meter mark on tackle 1. So depending on the score and stage in the game, im for it as you are only giving away 20 meters on the set for the chance to regain posession.

I think it makes sense if you're confident of defending your goal line. You get a chance to get the ball back.

Regardless of the distance kicked? That makes no sense according to the laws of physics.

If a ball is kicked 50m and the player returning it is travelling 30kph and the defender is travelling 30kph towards him, he is going to end up closer than a ball kicked 60m with both travelling the same speed. I'd guess 5m closer....

Currently the ball only has to travel 10m, which is an easy distance to drop out to enabling a contest.

Let's say it has to travel 30m; you'd have to kick it pretty bloody high to allow your team to make it an aerial contest.

For the record, I agree with you in regard to it being an interesting aspect of the game when a team is chasing points. Just not every drop out!

Guess you can't have it both ways unless the team getting it back gets to choose how far... Which sounds dumb. 🤣

For our opposition it is a no brainer to always go short against us. If they get the ball back that is a bonus. If we somehow get the ball it is no big deal as we cannot score points from within the opposition's 20 anyway.

If only we had someone who could kick em like Big Patty....I liked souths tactic last night kicking it straight down town but very high allowing chasers time to get under , coming down about 25 out
