Short kick off rule amendmemt

I think the next major change will be quarters .
Twenty minutes then 5 min break, then another 20 , 10 min for half time, rinse, repeat.
Better for Tv broadcasters and new age fans who’ll need a vape or white wine etc. it’s a moral imo once they finalise the expansion locations.
I'm surprised Vlandys didn't do this last time the media rights were up. He'll have another game to sell next time around so we might be saved for a while.

I see it as kind of the opposite. In the olden days you could win the ball back in a scrum or raking at the ruck, even stripping the ball. yes I’m pretty old. Short kick offs are a contest for possession which we have taken out of the game over time.

I miss the days of scrums being a contest and a good marker could steal the ball if his oponent was lazy.A good hooker was a game changer

Reduce the bench if they're worried about the intensity/HIA
It's part of the game that's changed a lot often. Since I was a kid... However less players playing more minutes will open it up for the halves

I think this is a little bit about “cause and effect” that may lead to more negative play.

The new rule benefits the defending team because as the consequence to a poor kick does not automatically means 2 points against them. Possession is key to winning games - if the defending team has a chance to regain possession with less risk, they will do this.

What could this mean? The attacking team may not use the kick as much when in the defending team’s red zone as the benefit from a kick that causes a repeat set of six is not as high.

I would expect to see more teams to use backline shifts as last tackle options with the obvious goal to score a try, failing that, the next best option is to die with the ball in the opposing corners - this could be viewed as being negative. For the defending team it will be tougher set of six as the attacking team will havebetter field position. It will also negate a 50/50 chance of losing possession in a worse field position.

I don't mind removing certain penalties from games.

When you think about it, you should only be penalised for a play that adversely affects the other team.

Foul play and offsides should be the limit - I even think a penalty for a shephard is overkill. It should just be a handover.

True mate but we must look forward. All us old diehards remember a totally different game, it was willing but some things tend to take on an aura over time. Was it better, a matter of opinion.
Yes, I remember once hearing a coach of mine say “ good hookers are hard to find” .
It became a standing joke in the dressing room.
But I heard something similar recently that “good halfbacks are hard to find”. I figure we just embrace the changes to the game, some better, some worse, and continue cheering for our beloved Tigers.
Hopefully we get to see some consistent success before our number comes up.

Is there another sport in the world that has as many rule changes? You can watch a game of an American sport from the 70’s or 80’s, and it’s a replica of what the game is today. Our game is unrecognisable to what it was back then.

100%

short kicking is gone out of the game with this.

you toil hard, work up field, get the perfect repeat set (which is harder with 7 tackles now) and then they get a 50-50 chance of getting the ball back without the risk of any ramifications.

Would be better if the rule was extended to ball
going dead 2 (not just out on the full) to encourage
repeat sets. The 20m 7 tackle rule is horse shit.
Also they haven't mentioned whether you could
lift a teamate like in union, this changes a lot
especially with shorter wingers, wouldn't b much
of a disadvantage having a smaller winger if your
second rower or centre lifts him to take the catch
for an onside kick off or drop out like in union

There's also the safety issue regarding contests

Absolutely!
Goal line defences are already far better than they were even 10 years ago, there's basically no way to build pressure anymore.
Even the six again rule has become so farcical, the refs just use it late game to balance the penalty count.
Why is the NRL so keen to stamp out the grind? It's not as if every team played that way 20 years ago anyway and it's usually a more enthralling contest when the scores a bit lower.
A blow out once in a while is fine, but a team gets blown out every week these days, and you can pretty much turn the game off at half time.
Maybe I'm just getting old haha
Rant over

It was a rule change that should never have happened it actually took a skill away from the game, many times i have seen the crowd come to life when possession changed hands at the play the ball
I’m with ya. Gone are the days of the loose head and feed being of any benefit. The only reason we have scrums is to get the slow folk out of the way for a play.
I particularly hate the 7 tackle set for a grubber that goes dead trying for a repeat set. The rule was bought in bcoz teams were booting it dead from halfway to negate a good fullback and it worked, but it has the negative effect inside the the 20m when going for repeat sets and scoring off a well placed grubber. Two highlights of the game you want to encourage.
I reckon if the attacking team kicks a grubber from inside the 20m and it goes dead it should only be 6 tackle set, simple fix.

Yep don’t try and fix something not broken

It’s all about making the game as fast as possible. It’s why they do the set restarts, why they have abandoned scrums when the ball goes into touch. It’s one of my pet hates.
Honestly, Scrums need to die.

Sure I loved a good old 80's or 90's scrum. The hooker threw the ball in and you see the two teams push against each other and roughly 1/3 of the time the team which did not have the feed got the ball.

Scrums are DEAD. I don't want to see this farce of the hooker placing it under one players legs and calling it a scrum. People broke their backs in a real scrum, I get why it had to end.

I am open to doing the Union style throw-in.
