Should our "big 5" offer to take pay cuts?

We all know we have 4-5 players who are all on between 25-75% more than what they are worth.

- Reynolds (400-500k overpaid)
- Mbye (300-500k overpaid)
- Packer (Probably 200k overpaid when he is playing)
- McQueen (200k overpaid)

Should these guys offer to take some sort of pay cuts in order for us to strengthen our squad? I don't know how some of these guys can actually turn up to training knowing what they are on and look at other guys in the eye.

I know they have no right responsibility to, but players have done this before for the benefit of the club.

@Roar_Power If I was sitting on my backside most of the season instead of playing I would consider it .

Please. Nobody would. I won't take a pay cut if I get Ill and can't work.
I still have bills to pay.

@Newtown When you are sitting on your backside most of the season, you can be assured your next contract is not going to be anywhere near as big (assuming you even get offered another contract). Its honourable to say you would take a pay cut but I very much doubt you would give up such a wicket in a career that at best spans 10-15 years.

Please this is not the Comedy Channel.
Those guys were signed by a desperate admin
you learn from you're mistakes hopefully we're headed in the right direction now and probably have a painful 2020 coming but with the young guys Madge has signed and contracts finishing
things should look brighter for 2021 dare I say a plan coming together.

Simple answer is not overpay in the 1st case .....the only player I think who got the right offer /performance at the time was Packer

Matulino had serious knee issues , Reynolds had injury issues and can only play with one particular style of halves partner (which we didn't have ) , Mbye while being OK as a player hasn't proven himself at one position and McQueen hadn't hit the heights since 2013-14 for a long time

NRL squads are all about getting the right mix and the right side that gels 95% of the time

We've signed decent players ...but the mix was never right with our existing squad

Like Walters can play multiple positions ..master of none yet

It's the coaches call on them sitting in their backsides. Im sure they all want to be selected in first grade.

Players have done it before to keep other players at the club etc.

I wouldn't expect anyone too, but someone like JR is realistically worth 300k on the market and we are getting the value of a 200k player, yet playing him 800k. He could easily take a paycut to 600k and hes still laughing.

Remember we said wed pay the majority of his contract and there were still no takers.

The odd player that had grown up loving then playing for that club might. We're just a transit lounge for the guys mentioned.

That's not what I read. The POM stated categorically that we would not pay the majority of JRey's contract if he were to leave. Presumably that's why he is still with us.

No the players shouldn't take a pay cut. Conversely they shouldn't be asking for pay rises during contract either. Stick to the agreed financial value.

@Furious1 Yep, agree. If we were stupid enough to offer some of these deals, it's our fault and we have to manage that. Let's hope we are smarter next time, but if history means anything it's hard to be optimistic.

Yep spot on about being dumb enough to offer such deals. Poor cap management. I'm a bit more optimistic about the next time round. Hartigan having come from the rooster setup should hopefully help in not overpaying.

They should fire up, have one massive year and then demand a release if we won’t pay them more.
