Should the WT grant Benji a release

The way it has been handled I say no.

If a release was given, I'd make it a condition that you can go, but not to any rugby league club globally, unless they pay a release to the WT. In other words, if he decides to come back to league after a mega $$$ Japanese deal, which may be a ploy of getting out of his contract, he knows the hurdle that awaits him or simply no release will be given, make him sign it. Tell Tauber Honor the contract or we will sue for commercial loses, if he doesn't like it tough, why did he shop him around for. This is a two way street, we owe nobody anything. Sheens held us to ransom, we're paying him out and people have a soft spot for Benji. The same people that love Benji but criticize others for bagging him should wake up, I'm sick of hearing he was the greatest WT ever, he won us a premiership. Sheens was the greatest WT coach in our history, he actually assembled the premiership, but that didn't stop anyone putting in the boot. No disrespect to Benji or his lovers but quite simply, he'll be gone but we're still here supporting the WT. The ball gets thrown back it his court soon, let's hope things don't get even uglier from Benji or by the fans.

Well said. Look at soccer. We should get paid if anyone else wants him. Mark my words he will end up playing league again as gasnier and co.
I support the tigers not benji. Benji just happens to play for the tigers. He will long gone and tigers will still be around. Don't be sook benji just leave with your dignity

They simply can not make him stay. It would be embarrassing for both parties. I dont know what the hell is going on…but one thing is for certain. This is Benji's last year for the club.

It appears they are seeing if Benji himself changes his mind. On the surface it appears he's listening to bad advice from his manager.

Theyve already tried this one on…NRL wouldnt register him anyways

He should be released. Have a good close look at how interested he looks on the field this year and tell me that won't deteriorate further if he's forced to stay in a situation he doesn't want to be in. And while it's easy to drop a player to reggies, you don't shell out $500k a year for someone to play in that grade.

Let him go now so we can prepare for football beyond 2013 without Marshall.

The club has no choice as it would end up in a legal battle and than nobody wins. Also as ugly this saga may get, Benji was still probably one of the best things ever to happen to the Weststigers and their short history,so I say shake hands, thank him and give him release to anywhere he wants to go and that includes the NRL, on what I have seen over the past couple of years he will not come back and bite us

Agree completely. Why pay for a player who doesn't want to be here?

Make him sweat and wait a bit. There's no rush, he's made his intentions now, get Tauber flying in weekly, every Saturday arvo for release talks for the next 20 weeks and then we'll consider any offer he might propose.

Any chance of a salary cap exemption if we release Marshall immediately? I say that with the greatest affection for Benji as a player, but I think he's done enough and doesn't look like he's enjoying himself. Time to bring some new kids in.

There is a precedent here set by Balmain forward Dennis Tutty. You cannot charge a transfer fee for a player going to another club or even another code; legally, this is a restraint of trade.

Its not a restraint of trade mid-contract. It is simply a price one club pays to buy out the contract. Definitely not a restraint of trade.

Yes and who cares where he goes if he goes to another NRL club all the better for us we'll have a turn style to run through twice a year

Benji is no longer a priority, how about we shop him around, listen to where he wants to go, make a dollar out of it. Make him sit out two years if he can't agree. Let him suffer the same fate as SBW, play union, but no league for two years. Once he laces him boots for union he forfeits the right to return to the WT, abandoning employment. Who gave this guy permission to look around, Rebels stating they were approached 6-7 weeks ago. Who are the fools still looking at this guy and claiming he's a all time WT legend.
Please name me one club great at any NRL club who has done something similar and remained a legend.

Loved watching him play & will miss him, make it so he cant play League for the next two years. Looking @ this his Manager Tauber is the main problem & a GRUB as he has obviously been shopping him around for weeks as Benji is his cash Cow.

And if the player claims that the transfer fee inhibits his right to ply his trade elsewhere, after gaining a release, then it certainly is a restraint of trade, mid contract or not. The club can't have it both ways; if they release the player, there is no contract and they can't impose a transfer fee or sell a contract which no longer exists.
