Shocking news ! They've chosen the time and place specifically and deliberately. In the centre of Australia's power city and just before Christmas and New Years. Very scary…

I think a weekend would've been better suited if you think like that. A Monday is a weird one. I think the message is to scare the people and the authorities and that's it. Get people's exposure and attention.

It is the first week day of the school holidays for all children

Creating fear at its most basic level is the want of any terrorist , that at any time or place no one is safe

I'm surprised that no terrorist has really targeted a large multi national to get a point across

I read somewhere that a massive awards conference for the Yum group in 2001 was shortlisted by Jemaal Islamiyah to be bombed

School Holidays start next week for the majority…Happy

Prayers are with all those involved....shocking

Just goes to show how fanatical and desperate for attention these poor excuses for human beings are…

Xmas time ....PEACE and JOY to all on earth....means nothing to these idiots...

Serious Geo I thought they would be on school holidays by now

My kids are on 2nd week already

It's only the minority (private schools) who are finished school already. The rest finish on Friday.

The day and time is deliberate. In the heart of the Sydney CBD, in the middle of many of the largest companies in Australia. The area is a ghost town on a weekend. Pitt ST mall on the weekend however…

Why is there a press conference in Victoria talking about Victorians and there procedures when this is happening in Sydney ?

A bit or a farce if you ask me…

I guess that happens with a rolling coverage when nothing new is to report.

My wife works not far from there in one of the major city buildings. As soon as there was speculation about other locations i left work straight away and went and got her.

And the Qld commissioner has made comments as well

Wondering if this guy is part of an underground militant group in Australia that has links in all major cities and is known to police ??

It means a time to get more attention.

Another 2 have escaped, this guy is a real amateur. Now to watch the replay 500 times cos they have nothing else to show

The roots in the core of my being in my connection to Sydney have been shaken - my childhood among many many others - my time as kid playing in wests magpies jersey, the beach, riding a mongoose, redline, pk. ripper, the girls, eating weetbix - the coffee and beer in the pub with a mate or two, - my father and mother immigrants of Europe coming to live the Australian dream - raising 3 kids and one brat - were but now innocent memories. We were a world away. Today it's in our backyard. Today is the saddest day in my life in Australia. My heart bleeds for the hostages and their families.

A couple of my good mates are cops. They've both told me that there is strong intel saying something big may happen on NYE.

Of course there is every year, but they have said they've never had so much fear around their stations from what they've been hearing than this year.

I'm playing it safe and taking their advice this year.

I've just got a terrible feeling.

Claims bearded man was with two others similarly dressed

A SYDNEY man who came face-to-face with the hostage gunman says he threatened to “shoot him too”.

Craig Stoker was walking down Phillip Street after buying a coffee in the Lindt Cafe when he bumped into the gunman.

“He was wearing a black T-shirt with white writing on it and a headband and carrying a blue bag.

“The bag bumped into me and there was something hard in it.

“I said ‘watch where you are f***ing going’.

“He turned round and said ‘do you want me to shoot you too?.’ I looked into his eyes and they were crazy,” said Mr Stoker, a father of four from Eastlakes. “I was pretty freaked out.”

The bearded man was with two others who were similarly dressed.

Mr Stoker had no idea how lucky his escape was.

He went into the Sydney hospital to have some stitches removed and only realised a siege was taking place when he came out.

“I had no idea what was going on. When I found out I was pretty shaken up. I am going to buy a lottery ticket right now.”

Ive heard the same thing….stay out of the city on NYE

i think the positive of it all is that the police will now have first hand experience.
I think we will dig in from here on in. Or at least we hope so.

whats in there anyway - the city?

Not quite sure what you mean here AHX.
Fireworks, thousand of people partying the night away in one of the most beautiful cities in the world on the biggest occasion of the year?
