Madge talking about recruitment approach
“We need to be clear about not making the same mistakes this club’s made in the past,” Maguire said.

“We’re in the process of making major changes but we need to be smart about how we make those changes.

“The position our salary cap is in at the moment, we need to get players’ values spot on.

“We want to give players the best opportunity to build something here at Wests Tigers that hasn’t been here at the club for some time.

“We’ve got a great young squad, now we just need to be patient about making the right decisions around who we bring into the club next.

“We won’t be just spending money for the sake of spending it.

“I’d rather take my time and focus on building the club from the ground up. We’ll be diligent about making the right decisions.”

Stands and applauds!!!

In Madge we trust

I hope cochise and Lidcombe read what Madge has stated.....they both got stuck into me about doing nothing and me going on about not making the same mistakes as in the past..here it is in black and white straight from the coaches mouth...

It was been reported both ***in the mainstream media*** as well as from the south Sydney side of things and the tigers side that wests are AD’s preferred option. This is due to a number of reason but mostly because we can offer him the 6 role long term but if he plays well for us in 2020 then he also has first crack at fullback. ***Not to mention he already has a working relationship with Madge***. 100 K is a lot of money that I don’t think anyone would just simply give up

Explain to me two things.

1. Point me to a MSM report where Doueihi states that the Tigers are his preferred destination.
2. Explain to me the "working relationship with Madge?" Has he ever played under him?

Why the change Glenn ....

Good post. Douehi has always been a good player. It makes you wonder if there is a disconnect between WTs and Balmain with the quality players es aping our system.

Oh right on time for the Paps commentary

Needs more speed in the back line!

Maguire must have more faith in the squad than the fans - clearly - and seeing he has got to get the best from them I admire that belief and his resistance to spend money widely like Cleary did. He will be judged by his results but still think he is far more informed about what is needed than any one on here.

Tigers improved a lot analytically in 2019 from Ivan’s tenure in 2018 don’t forget tigers were near dead last in all key attacking stats. While still not great In 2019 they moved into that 7-10 range for most attacking numbers from stone motherless the previous couple years. I’m expecting more improvement this year.

Has anyone bothered to find out if Papenhuyzen is happy at the Storm?

No I don’t have his phone number unfortunately.

That post should be in the bad Dad's jokes lol

Our cc team was deadset awful last year. You can't have a team of teenagers playing against men every week, having someone like Hoffman who's versatile and experienced is invaluable. Ask Wenty.

Didn't we have Reynolds, Packer, et, nofo (start of the season) playing cc last year?

Tbh, I'm ok with him as a cc signing, just not sure his experience will be the difference in dead set awful and finals footy.

Might be in the minority here, but to pay AD $600K with such limited game time, I'd honestly prefer a young Bubba Kennedy type of player - for half that price. I like him as a player and thought he went good for Lebanon in the World Cup plus thought he made a difference for South's in the finals last year, but with his injury history...and especially coming to a club with such highly noted poor facilities. It's just too much of a risk at that price.
No offence but the club would be stupid to pay all of that. IDC where he'd fall in the NRL FB values/prices order.

No issues with BJ. Have a little concern about what it does for Tommy Talau, but also reckon he'll be great for the young fella to learn from. Agree with others that speed is still an issue, so hope we see the best out of RJ - as I think it's embarrassing (for the club) that Brooks was our only speedster last year.

I think our other main issue is our 9.
One positive...for me anyways, is how good is our forward pack starting to look?!

I think Bubba was a one of a kind. What a tragedy he played for Balmain at such a low time.

Still in shock AD is being talked about in the 500k range. Honestly, how did that even happen at Souths.

Simply put, AD is not a 500k player. He is JUST potential at this moment.

He is just potential at the moment. But he has shown his ability in first grade in his limited games. We are a club that NEED to sign on potential because no established star is going to go anywhere near WT unless we pay double what they are worth. I'd rather Douehi at $500k that Latrell at $1.1m or whatever it was that we offered him. And that still wasn't a big enough carrot to get the fat, lazy lump to sign with our club.
Would be ecstatic to get Douehi to WT. He looks like quality.
It doesn't really matter too much anyway because any player that shines for a struggling club will be induced to break contract and sign with the Roosters, Souths etc.

The more and more I think about it Lauren , if we want results in 2020 we may need to take a punt

I just don't think this squad has a Top 8 performance in them

Question - If Knights sign AJ from Souths does that take AD off the table from a souths point of view because they will need him to cover in the backs ?

@happy_tiger I see the appeal with him, think he has some great attributes - size and organisation skills - and agree that he could definitely help us make the 8(if fully fit all year), but (for WT) to front the whole $600K this just undoes the whole message Madge has reinforced.
This would only tell me that we bow down for anyone.

I know we have problems attracting established players but I believe having a coach like Madge - and his vision - is what can essentially turn things around for a long suffering club like ours.

If we are 6/2 after our first 8 games, would that validate our recruitment drive?

Yes and if you you truly believe that back it .

You will get great odds

Can the club stand by and let us miss the 8 again

I don't think we can ...we lose any of the little respect NRL players have with another failure

Just my two bobs worth

I far from "got stuck into you"? I disagreed with you and still do. I think it would be a very poor recruitment outcome to go into the 2020 with the current squad plus upgraded players. We need a better outcome than that from this offseason. We have improved the rosters of other teams while we have diminished out top 30 for 2020.

If we make the signings of BJ and AD at sensible amounts then I am willing to concede we will have a stronger top 30 than last year and that our recruitment was a success albeit a little lucky!

Adam Douehi is worth no more than 400k, BJ 450k. You could justify 50k more at a stretch.
Not a chance you take either on back ended inflated contracts. If we are talking 600k + walk away now.

I like both but the club has to be sensible and not get desperate. It’s how we ended up with Reynolds, Mbye, Packer on big money.

450k for BJ? Lol. I mean yeah if you could. But you can’t. His metric value is closer to 700k. So yeah 450k won’t happen BUT how good is blind impressions of ones worth

Raiders signed Curtis Scott on a 4 year deal at 400k p.a. He’s 22 and a better centre ask Ricky.
The Rabbits just signed Latrell on 700k.
I’m glad your not managing the salary cap as that’s a mighty expensive BJ. The Metric Value of A BJ depends on the technique.

He’s a good player, I rate him but at those dollars it would be as bad as Reynolds. You don’t pay that sort of money for a centre known for inconsistent play. It would undo all the work Madge has undertaken for short term gain. When we lose a young player that comes through we will regret the expensive BJ.

IMO Curtis Scott is not a better centre than BJ and there is no evidence that Ricky thinks he is better. Clearly Ricky thinks he is better *value* but that is an entirely different thing including his age and salary cap space over time. Also I doubt Scott is on $400K
