Langer Cup: Sydney clubs snap up Queensland schoolboy talent

Here are a dozen reasons why there is nothing wrong with the pathway for young Queensland league players aspiring to make it in the NRL, despite concerns from chairman Peter V’landys. We name some Sunshine State schoolboys off to the NRL – but not via the Broncos, Cowboys or Titans.

Here are a dozen reasons why there is nothing wrong with the pathway for young Queensland rugby league players aspiring to make it in the NRL.

They are players from the Langer Cup competition who are just a snapshot of the schoolboys throughout Queensland signed by non Queensland NRL clubs for 2020 and beyond.

We’re highlighting their success ahead of the semi-finals of the Langer Cup and Walters Cup, which will be livestreamed at couriermail.com.au on Wednesday.

Wavell SHS pair Tom Lunney (Canberra) and Prinston Esera (Raiders), Marsden SHS’s Teapo Stoltman (Raiders), Liam Su’a (Rabbitohs), Chris Faagutu (Tigers), Eli Tuli (Eels) and Lance Fualema (Eels), Keebra Park SHS trio Trey Peni (Wests Tigers), Lachlan Adamson and Lleyton Borg (both Bulldogs) and Ipswich SHS pair Evander Tere-Rongotaua and Tommy Luhrman (both Roosters) have secured NRL deals away from the Titans, Cowboys or Broncos.

Wavells Prinston Esera is signed by the Raiders.

The 12 were examples that, despite concerns from NRL chairman Peter V’landys, the pathway for young Queensland talent into the NRL is still a smooth process despite the failure of the Queensland NRL teams in season 2020.

Speaking on Monday night on Channel 9, V’landys expressed concern the plight of the Broncos, Titans and Cowboys this season was an indication the path for the next generation of Queensland teenage talent was what it should be.

But the reality is many Queenslanders find a way into NRL clubs even if they are not signed by the three Queensland clubs.

And these 12 players are merely a snapshot of young maroons bound for the NRL off-season training not in Queensland, with many players from Langer Cup powerhouse Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, the Titans Cup competition, Gee Cup and Payne Cup competitions all secured by southern clubs.

Ipswich SHS pair Evander Tere-Rongotaua and Tommy Luhrman, who will play in Wednesday’s Langer Cup semi-finals, said they were honoured to be given an opportunity by the Roosters.

“It felt amazing it was very exciting for not just me but for my family too,’’ Luhrman said.

“It was a dream come true it was one foot closer to achieving the dream of playing NRL. But you haven’t made it until you have made it.’’

Ipswich SHS teammate Tere-Rongotaua, who was also signed by the Roosters, added: “Being able to sign a contract was a dream come true.

“When I signed my first contract it was highly unexpected to be signed at that age. It was a very humbling and emotional experience.

“As now I am able to live my dreams and put me and my family in a position to live a life we dreamt of.’’

So Trey Peni seems a decent prospect, big winger from Keebra. Played for qld last year.

Chris Faagutu seems to be a hooker.

I don't subscribe to the telecrap so can't read articles on these boys.

You would assume we are looking at Tamou to partner Aloiai in the starting front row. This will allow for Twal to remain at lock and not have to rotate into the front row.

If we have to pay overs to him then I think money is better spent in our back line, however at a good price for a year or two max I think he can take some of the 'work horse' slack off from Twal. I saw a little bit of aggression in Twals game againts panthers (even being first to run into some scuffles) so I think there is some aggression in his game and possibly it's not coming out due to him having to play such long high work rate minutes? When Aloiai goes off we can hopefully replace his punch with Mikalei and Musgrove, should mean we have decent impact rotated nicely throughout the game.

I would be looking to sign Taniela Paseka back from Manly. Off Contract 2021and seems like a player Madge can work with. I’m over older players. We need size and power and many of them. Hunt as a pack.

When I hear experience I hear older injured slower less athletic player wanting to cash in at our expense.

We should continue targeting guys like Blore and Luciano.

Juniors will get smashed without experience around them showing them the way and how to win.Roosters signed the Morris twins and just extended for another season, but I guess they don’t know what their doing

Roosters are nuffies, apparently it's all done with brown paper bags.

Maybe so but they know how to win we on the other hand can’t even make the semis 10 years in a row

We're simply biding our time. Building then re-building, then building again then re-building again. Trusting the process. We've been very consistent...

Just being sarcastic mate . The roosters are in another league to us on how to build a club and a roster.

They can get away with it. This argument to me isn't valid as the Morris twins aren't leading the Roosters via their experience. The roosters have won a couple of comps without the Morris twins.

You win via having the talent on the park not via experience.

Penrith show that pretty well. I’m pretty sure their overall squad is the youngest in the league on average. Their staR players are all early 20’s or younger

Look at their forward pack - Tamou, Yeo, James Fisher-Harris, Tetevano are all players with great experience.

Few mentioned would make a good pickup.

Biggest factor for them is the leadership Group - Tamou, Tetevano, Yeo, Koroisau, Fisher-Harris. They Lead both on and off the field where our Seniors are just after the money and not willing to take ownership.
We desperately need players like this for all the young players we have . Tamou and Proctor would be very handy for the next 2 years but once again our money is tied up. Madge will keep getting cheaper players mainly young until the salary cap is fixed - Smart move

Flegler from Brisbane is available. Tigers should snap him up. Quality and youth.

Besides Tamou the other guys have a good amount of experience (100-150 games) but not a huge amount compared to some players. It’s not experience that’s helping them it’s class. Cleary, Crichton, To’o, Martin, Luai, Naden, Kikau, May, Leniu. They’re all very young still and all doing a great job.

Experience is important but skill and attitude is more important and that’s what these guys have.

Yeah that’s it, they don’t have a huge stack of more experienced guys but the ones that are experienced are proper leaders and role models. The young guys base their attitudes off them and work their hard on the field because of it.
