Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Our signings record over the past couple of years has been abysmal. The two teams I think we're most like in terms of size, reputation, location etc are the Bulldogs and Sharks. Both teams have completely outgunned WT in the quality of their signings this year. It has become an embarrassment how we are consistently out-manoeuvred time after time for quality players. Surely at some point this will have an effect on retention of WT fans and sponsors and ultimately on retaining our own quality players. I can't imagine the likes of Stefano and Simpkin wanting to stay with a club which is a consistent non-performer. Put simply, something has to change if we are to change botrh the perception and reality of our club's performances on and off the field.
Not much point having a whinge without proposing a solution. Here's mine:
a) get rid of Hartigan. We have stuffed up too many recruitments. I'm sure he was a great recruiter at Easts. But it's not that hard to recruit players to Easts because they desperately want to go there and will go there for less money than clubs like WT. His style just doesn't work with a club like ours.
b) get rid of Maguire. The players don't respond to him and he's had more than enough time to get better results than he's getting. Nice guy but he's part of the problem and will not be part of the solution. I'd sign Flanagan in a heartbeat. He knows how to coach and will have a better chance of attracting quality players. I think the mere fact that we make the switch to Flanagan will change the dynamic for WT and will open us up for business with better quality players. I know plenty of forum members have no time for Flanagan but he's a winner and I would ensure his contract had strong behavioural clauses in it.
c) get rid of Pascoe. He's been at WT for long enough to improve the culture of the club and he just hasn't been successful. He just does not have the vibe of a COE. His position would be the easiest of the three to recruit to, there would be a good field of applicants.
d) Once those three changes have been made I'd have Sheens and Flanagan go through the playing roster and get rid of / pay out any player that doesn't fit with the culture and uncompromising playing style that the new WT represents.
Once those changes have been made I think players would be more willing to come and play with us but it could take three years to build a finals-ready roster. I'd be prepared to wait.

Flanagan attracted players by breaking the salary cap. CHEAT

Yes but the argument was he can attract players, he had to cheat to get those players. The main reason I don't want him is he has shown that he can't be trusted with the welfare of players and I am not willing to have that at the club.

Sorry to bring this back to a Signing and Suggestion chat.
As Murray Talaugi has announced resigned I stumbled across this tidbit in the article.

“The Cowboys were offered the services of English twins Innes and Louis Senior, who are contracted to Huddersfield, but any move now appears unlikely for next year with Taulagi now set to re-sign.”

I just looked these boys up.

21 yo 6’4 and 100kg.
Wing and Centre
Anyone know much about them.

It sounds like they were keen to try there hand in Aus.

With the cowboys out of the running I wonder if our new head of football may have a word to them?

You might be surprised!

Should be a talent scout.

Woods still makes metres but is really exposed in defence - the game is too quick for him. I thought he was off to either Melbourne or Manly!

Parra and Manly were the sides linked.

Why would we need both Woods AND Klemmer? We aren’t exactly short of props. Unless Mikaele is leaving. And if Musgrove never re-emerges from the black hole he was sucked into.

People crying out for marquee signings. Who was the last marquee/origin player the two competition leading teams signed? Development is the answer; it will take time but it's clearly the only method that is sustainable.

There are really only 2 clubs that sign marquee and well-performing players with any consistency - Easts and Souths. Easts make a habit out of signing other people's established players and Souths are on a good run with Rusty Crowe and Bennett of picking up some renowned talent, even though the core of their side is still home-sourced (Cook, Reynolds, Walker, Johnston, Murray etc.).

Every other clubs signs players here and there, usually not superstar signings and very often they don't work out. E.g. Knights got Ponga, and when he's not injured he's great, but other signings haven't really worked out - Pearce, Klemmer, Aidan Guerra, Connor Watson, Tautau Moga, SKD, Herman Essay Essay, Shibasaki, Mason Lino, Jesse Ramien, Kurt Mann, Edrick Lee, Glasby, Gavett, Lilyman etc. Even Frizell has been pretty average 2021. They let Tom Starling go and have been having hooker issues ever since.

Have been talking to a mate of mine who follows Warrington and lives over that way. He laughed when I mentioned we’re keen on Louis Senior and said we’re kidding ourselves if we’d even consider him - but said his brother Innes goes alright

I hope it isn’t true. They aren’t standouts and english backs are notoriously bad at adapting to the size, speed and skill of the NRL. We already Gildart lets leave it at that for the moment.

what've ya heard?

How complicated is this! Simon Woolford was trying to get them a run in the NRL and nearly had them at the Cowboys but they opted for the young guys they already have. He approached the Tigers ( and others ) about them but apparently, Woolford is not their official manager so we told him to get nicked. Their real manager is not accredited here so can't negotiate with NRL clubs but he has been in contact with a couple of local representatives to see what can be done. They come as a package deal, however, and not many clubs are in a position to make that sort of a deal so we're a massive chance.

is Woolford a manager?

He's definitely a gibber moron.
