Ex-Tigers centre Joey Leilua sent the rugby league world into a spin when he blasted coach Michael Maguire, while also denying reports he was only offered a train-and-trial contract by the club.

And now the Tigers have responded to the confusion over the 29-year-old’s future.

Leilua’s contract, understood to be worth around $800,000 per season, expires this year. News Corp reported that the Tigers had offered him a $1,000-per week train-and-trial deal rather than a top 30 contract extension after he had a disappointing season.

Does anyone have any insight into what sort of money could be made playing Union in the USA, never really struck me as a big dollar option for players.

Major League Rugby in the US have a salary cap of $500k (US). This includes medical benefits. The LA team ws stung for including a full medical scheme for the athletes, where it was claimed they overspent the cap. As most clubs have acouple of marquee players, there are a lot playing for match payments.
Of course if you look at some of the cattle playing there are obviously third party payments and other "ambassadorships" which they can use to bulk up the payments.
Regarding Joey, he has no chance of playing in the US, because he doesnt really have a position to play in... he is not a suitable rugby centre, too slow for winger and lacks the specific skills of a forward. In addition MLR teams have caps on the number of imports, no team would go near him at the risk of using one of those import quotas. Finally, it takes at 3-6 months to get a visa, which would could only start once he had a signed contract, at best he would be arriving untested in the US in March / April, more likely May / June.

The Hodgson vs Api situation is very interesting. I am not saying this will happen I actually think it will fall through (knowing the tigers). But looking in as a fan Hodgson is definitely the better option long term if we can get rid of Liddle. Simpkin is a class hooker and has proved this in KOE and first grade. Our problem is and has been for a while is an 80 minute hooker. For me wasting a bench spot on a hooker or utility is silly especially for a team like the tigers. It needs to be 4 big men. I think Simpkin does need to be phased into 80 minutes but Hodgson is perfect for the whole team.

People are even starting to make rubbish excuses for Liddle.... "oh he fatigues that's why he struggles" for a start he's a professional player that's played over 50 games, he shouldn't be getting tired after 20 mins as a dummy half. Different if he's a prop

Secondly he can't pass! No matter what time of the game he manages to throw a pass at Brooks ankles or over Doueihis head.

Not saying he's completely rubbish and should be punted but it's pretty clear we need a lot more direction at hooker and if you're choosing one of Liddle or Simpkin to put time into and develop, you always choose Simpkin.

There's no harm in keeping both our current hookers AND signing Hodgson either

Mate I was at both games in Redcliffe and Liddle was walking around in back play all the time with hands on hips he was completely gassed after 15 minutes, maybe go too some live games you might see it for yourself

I guess it's pretty common knowledge that Joey is not the brightest guy around and probably would not of done too much research or thought things over too carefully before making an announcement about USA Rugby Union.

Im seriously amazed this club decided to re-sign him, it seems bulking up in the offseason has done him no good at all, cant have a hooker in 1sts passing the way he does. Rather invest into Simpkin who showed more in his first two games than liddle has in a long time. Consistently producing those kind of games will come with age I feel, wasn't suprised to see him struggle after those two first games especially after his effort in the souths game. Liddle on the other hand, if hes not there now, I don't see the point in holding onto him apart from warming the seat really.

Unless Logen Dillon is on our top 30 we will still need a backup fullback - development players aren't able to play until round 10 or 11.

He's clearly talented but I think it would be a mistake to rush him into first grade next year, he's very small, got dominated in NSW cup and needs maybe two off seasons to get ready? Definitely one to invest in though

I'm surprised someone like you Josh still doesn't understand the eligibility. Dev players can play at any point in the season, it's injuries/suspensions hit. And then they can also play any in any game after round 10/11.

That's why it makes sense to have a spine player in your dev squad. Not many clubs have several halfbacks or fullbacks in their top 30. If all the natural players on that position we're unavailable then you can promote the Dev player until the others return from suspension/fitness.

Im seriously amazed this club decided to re-sign him, it seems bulking up in the offseason has done him no good at all, cant have a hooker in 1sts passing the way he does. Rather invest into Simpkin who showed more in his first two games than liddle has in a long time. Consistently producing those kind of games will come with age I feel, wasn't suprised to see him struggle after those two first games especially after his effort in the souths game. Liddle on the other hand, if hes not there now, I don't see the point in holding onto him apart from warming the seat really.

The Hodgson vs Api situation is very interesting. I am not saying this will happen I actually think it will fall through (knowing the tigers). But looking in as a fan Hodgson is definitely the better option long term if we can get rid of Liddle. Simpkin is a class hooker and has proved this in KOE and first grade. Our problem is and has been for a while is an 80 minute hooker. For me wasting a bench spot on a hooker or utility is silly especially for a team like the tigers. It needs to be 4 big men. I think Simpkin does need to be phased into 80 minutes but Hodgson is perfect for the whole team.
Hodgson is a leader and has the British connection with Hastings, Gildart and Sheens. Which you would think would tempt him to come. Only flaw for me is that he is injury prone but that is easily fixed. IE: Hastings, Simpkin and I would like to see Dockar-clay in the top 30.

In conclusion, in the long run and for the team you would think Hodgson is the wiser choice. With Simpkin at 14 to add attacking flare. But we will see how the meat head of Pascoe sorts this us.

Mate, nobody joins an organisation while having bad intentions and Hartigan proved that in 2019 and 2020. It’s more likely that the club is culturally sick and did not know how to manage him or extract his skill long term. Shane Millard also left and joined Bulldogs as coach of pathways development.
WT has a history of mismanagement. It’s seen in the number of disgruntled players who leave.

Either this club or this forum has a habit of bad mouthing those who leave us. Many deserved it too but we really have to look inward. We've had a few messy break ups:

Teddy, Moses, Woods, Cleary, Matterson, Aloiai, JAC just to name a few. Then there is the back office staff in Millard, JT, Hartigan. You really have to look inward.

We fans don't know anything tbh.. so on supporter forums like these we will say a lot of bad stuff about people who are no longer with the organisation. But I really hope that those in-charge are a lot more introspective than we are.

The Pom came here and said a couple of bad things about Hartigan and all of a sudden, he's a villain on here. But his failures are the club's failures.

Gotta agree, Hartigan certainly would have started at WT highly motivated and with good intentions. Something happened to him during his time at the club. Sacking him will not remedy that. We need to focus more on the systems and procedures in order to find how we destroyed his enthusiasm for the club. I feel uncomfortable bagging the club for its failures but if all the fans show blind loyalty and overlook the shortcomings then it follows that nothing will improve.

Will be very interesting to see if Dillon can take the step up, few years back now I remember being at Henson park watching us play a trial and papenhuyzen was playing his first or second game against men and he was ragdolled severly, lasted 10 mins before being replaced think he dropped the ball twice and was poleaxed. So big task ahead for Dillon as he is similar build, might see him get a run in nrl towards the end of this up coming season if he aims up.
