Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Does anyone have an idea how much cap room we have next year.

We are reportedly 1m under the Cap and have Siros contract coming off assuming 400k. Assuming 1.4m.

Estimated contracts expiring:
JJ Felise (150k) Heath Gibbs (100k) Pita Godinet (100k)Tim Grant (300k), Benji Marshall. (200k) Sam McIntyre (100k)Thomas Mikaele (100k)Kevin Naiqama (250k)Dylan Smith (100k), Sauaso Sue,(250k) Malakai Watene-Zelezniak (100k)

If the amounts are anywhere near correct we would have 1.4m + 1.75m = $3.15m

Players under top 30 on contract:
Thompson, Fonua, Nofa, Marsters, MCK, Brooks, Reynolds, Lawrence, Rochow, ET, Packer, Liddle, Matulino, Twal, Eiso, Aloai, Mcilwrick, Mcqueen, Tui, Gamble, Mcintyre.

If I am anywhere near the mark we will have 9 spots and 3.15m to spend. That’s a pretty healthy position to be in and gives us a chance to turn over 1/3 of the roster and improve it.

Need to have another look at the squad mate. Gibbs, McIntyre, Mikaele and Smith are all development players (though there is talk of at least one them being upgraded soon). They don't count as part of the 30, and my understanding is that they outside of the cap.

But you are right, chance to upgrade some, and personally I'd look at upgrading on Godinet, Grant and/or Sue, maybe Felise as well (not sure what's happening with him).

It is official Uate will not be at Manly next year, they will try sign Burns from Souths to replace him and relieve cap pressure.
He would be a good 2 year option at not a huge cost, he has scored 18 tries at Manly in a little over a year.

If you are correct , the only ones from above that I would re-sign would be Felise & MWK. Then we should be in market for a top centre, front rower, back rower & full back. Tedesco is a mercenary and could be tempted for big dollars.

How many has he let in and how many dropped balls has he had?

Only player I would be interested in signing of that list is Val Holmes based on the fact he is versatile, young and very fast.

The club isn’t interested in signing quick fixes (barba) or taking someone’s problems off their hands (mybe).

Any marquee signing must tick all the boxes on many fronts. I’m not even sure Val Holmes fits the bill….it’s taken a lot of hurt to get us in this position....let’s not waste it on a rash purchase or a short term fix.

We should be looking at some better players not more rejects.

All I know is that someone will sign Barba and he will play well in most games for them.

The other thing I know is we signed Taane Milne for a top 30 spot. He didn’t play one top grade game, we sacked him, now we are scratching for decent backs.

I’m scratching my head thinking about the last marquee backline player we signed. Was that an aging Lote?

Have we ever signed a top line player in his prime other then adam blair ?

Brett Hodgson ??
Todd Payten ??
Gareth Ellis ??

On average most clubs turnover about 25% of their squad every year , seeing Cleary is still trying to get HIS roster I can live with 33% , I imagine we will sign a couple of the development players who show some potential for another season , only be league minimum's anyway unless someone shows interest

Ellis ok i guess but no to Hodgson he was on his way out at Parramatta injuries and they did not want him he was not top line we just got lucky with him same as we did Scott Prince and Payten

So let have let go and produce more then we have bought in

I blame Brian Smith for Hodgson's issues , didn't know if he was Arthur or Martha from week to week

Burns was one player I believe we should look at with his pathway blocked at Souths.

Remember Ewan McGrady , another player who thought da fence was the thing keeping the crowd off the oval

In attack I see a lot in Ponga that we saw in McGrady , even Barba is very similar

The game from a Wests perspective that stands out the most was Mal Meninga's last game at home , McGrady tore Canberra apart in the first half , and the minute it got real for Canberra , McGrady wasn't sighted

Someone who I spoke to about McGrady who knew him said homesickness was a massive issue , hated living in Sydney

Whether that was an excuse or reality , we will never know ….

Maybe we are

Maybe the Sharks may need to release a player to us ….

Few big mobile backrowers might be looking for more game time

Few centres / backrowers on their list , one of who was on our short list either 16 or 17

Not saying it is , but just wait and see what pans out ,Ivan and Justin aren't fools

If we aren’t interested in Barba then Justin and Ivan are fools. Massive fools.

This is the same Ben Barba who is one strike away from being permanently terminated from the NRL

I would of thought after the Simona and Lovett issues from 2017 we'd be avoiding players with drug issues like leprosy

We want a culture sure , not a drug culture thanks

I couldn’t care less. If we can sign a guy who spent a year in prison for assault, we can sign someone who tested positive for recreational drugs. The only culture at the tigers is one of perpetually losing, and I’m tired of it.

Wow, sounds like you need to be come a Rorters supporter.

Ellis ok? He would still be our best backrow option

Avo on Toast does make a good point.
We do have a culture we are trying to build and one we are trying to forget.
Redemption plays a part already and to say no to Barbs and yes to Packer is hypocritical.
I’m tired of our losing ways and players like Barba could steer us out of the darkness.
I understand he’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
But he’s miles ahead of lolohea.
