Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I think it is time to experiment with Daine at half and Tupou at Fullback.
Thats what i had when i picked my team for this week. Tupou could be the answer as long term FB. Obviously he isn't there yet but they are running him at FB in reggies so it is obviously the plan. I'd like to see him get a few games in the top grade at FB and Laurie at 6. Laurie looks more a 5/8 than FB.

Does anyone know what has happened with the ex Keebra Park Qld schoolboys prop from last season Herman Tofaeono?

He played a few of the early rounds of SG Ball for the Magpies (with Dotoi) then haven't seen his name listed anywhere (NSW or Qld). I'm assuming he sustained a long-term injury. He is a powerhouse metre-eating prop in the mould of what we lack in the seniors.
I'm guessing he's finishing school like Faagatu?

Cleanout at the dragons via DT

It’s expected that off-contract NRL players Billy Burns, Poasa Faamausili, Jackson Ford, Jack Gosiewski, Josh McGuire, Tautau Moga have either already, or will be told, they are free to negotiate with rival clubs.

It’s understood on-contract forward Josh Kerr has approached the club for permission to test his worth at a rival club.

What are you doing with the so called king if Laurie is 5/8.

I seen a post somewhere last week but I can’t remember for the life of me where, that Melbourne were signing a former origin player for the rest of the season immediately. This last part means nothing but I’ve got a mate who’s a die hard Melbourne supporter who reckons they have him in the bag aswell
Thought they were going to Sims early

Just trying to identify the 10 or so Pathways juniors who Sheens has indicated are signed up & identified as the future (given we are stacked in certain positions such as Lock, 2nd Row & Hooker, have noted that Sheens said in one of his radio interviews we can't keep them all).
  • Justin Matamua (Lock)
  • Brandon Tumeth (2nd Row)
  • Lachlan Galvin (2nd Row, potentially 5/8)
  • Tallyn Da Silva (Hooker)
  • Chris Faagutu (Lock, Prop)
  • Jordan Miller (Prop)
  • Tahj Colquhoun (Wing, Fullback)
  • Jahream Bula (Fullback, Wing)
  • Solomone Saukuru (2nd Row)
  • Cathane Hill (Fullback)
  • Kit Laulilii (Lock, Prop)
  • Levi Conti or Alex Conti or Heath Mason (Halves, probably just one of these)
I have left out Junior Tupou (as already signed to top 30), Josh Feledy (as coming from another Club & confirmed for Development contract with upgrade), Dudley Dotoi & Herman Tofaeono (as no one knows what is going on with them).

Sheens also mentioned Patrick Young in an interview as one he is impressed with but he adds to our packed Lock list).

Then there are the likes of William Craig (Centre) & Lipina Ata (Prop). Bloody hell it's hard to narrow down to 10-12.

Its Sheens - We'll need 12 or so Locks in the Squad...

Yeah will be interesting to see. I think your first 6 names would definitely be in the clubs high priority range. The remaining names you have mentioned could have a good case made for all of them too for different reasons. Tannous is possibly another one to add to that list who has come through the pathways. I trust Sheens can identify the talent and will choose the right ones.

Yeah the first 6 are standouts but all forwards. Sheens did say we would "cherry pick" experienced players in positions that our pathways lack top level quality in.

So to me, I think the brains trust will be looking at outside backs externally especially those with speed, power & acceleration.

I do wonder whether Sheens sees Tupou & Bula as potential fullbacks given they are being consistently played there in lower grade. I also think Scolari can excel as he goes up in grade with his strength, excellent defence for wing & ok speed, whilst Feledy is a big hope for centre.

Yeah definitely forwards for the future are strong. Add in Stefano, Pole and Papali'i and we should have a high quality forward pack in the years ahead.

The backs as you said might need a few players identified outside the system. Feledy hopefully makes big leaps from SG Ball to Flegg and Cup next year at least. It is a real shame that Dotoi hasn't been in and around Flegg. He has that speed and acceleration you mentioned. Hopefully if it is homesickness, this was a plan from the club and in 2023 he is permanently down here. Not holding my breath though, really been unknown and hasn't been spoken of by the club since pre-season when they named the SG Ball squads.

i put him in the centres. I'm not saying Laurie would replace as 5/8 long term but i would like to see what he has to offer there.
I reckon he offer a little more in A. But he’d get targeted and smashed up in D.
We need a real FB asap, not a project FB.

Re. Dotoi, Hopefully with his school mate Cathane Hill down here plus pathways player Kiernan Tempest (also from Qld) who he has played at Camden Rams with, he will have some social support around him.
