Now the question- do Souths back the coaches or the players?

From what i have read the coach is part of the problem - even his own coaching staff have complained of double standards for Mitchell and Walker that have a lot of players offside.

Rugby League people have fallen into a trap of assigning money based upon position. Some of the backlash concerning the Tino and Haas contracts were that they are "too much coin for a prop". What the hell does this mean? Despite being the hardest position on the field to play, those two guys are easily within the TOP 10 PLAYERS in the comp/world. Their impact is immense. They affect the outcome of games. They should be rewarded financially for being so. Same goes for Latrell. Id pay him more to play in the centres than I would at the back simply because he provides more high quality output there.

I actually got into some heated debates earlier in the year about this very topic.
He is not a creative. He should not be in the spine.
He is an impact player who injects himself at the right moments and has the power and skill to be very damaging when this occurs.
His best position is centre and it always has been.

I think you're underselling Latrell Mitchell quite significantly he definitely is creative and whatever position gets him the most ball he should be playing. The only thing that slows him down is his attitude toward fitness cause if he developed a work rate which I've seen him do on occasions within his career he could be damaging. The halves should be putting Latrell in better spots, I've barely seen any link up plays with Walker lately and Ilias is playing so incredibly poor it hurts to watch. If Bennett is still at the Rabbits and Reynolds is still the 7 they're winning the comp and we're not having this conversation.

If you watched the game on Sunday towards the last 10 mins he was totally fatigued and dropped the ball like 3 times and then sin-binned himself cause he lost his head. The injury he suffered which took him out of action for 12 weeks hasn't helped his already well-noted fitness issues.

Where it gets interesting is instead of the coaching staff implementing extras or plans to help get Latrell in shape, they've reportedly given him special treatment, and if the Rabbits form continues and they miss the 8. It may cost Demetriou his job.

It’s supply and demand at work … lots of good NFL RB‘s and NRL centres ( although we can’t find any,,)… Less good Fullbacks, halves

What's an indictment on 2023 western society is that there are already three comments on this thread focused on Mitchell's race. Why has his race got anything to do with what he's like as a footballer? And how come, in this thread where we're commenting about media stories criticising Mitchell, so many people feel the need to immediately note that we're not allowed to criticise Mitchell because of his race?

If you people are all as blind to race as you claim to be, why mention it at all?

Here's my view: Mitchell is a phenomenal talent who seems to have real trouble delivering on a consistent basis and who it certainly seems may lack application. It now seems his current club may - though this is all based on rumour and media coverage, which of course we are all rightly dubious about - have badly mishandled him, in a way that amplifies rather than moderates his professional issues. See? Not hard, is it? Am I going to be arrested by the racism police?

I never said I was blind to it. I think it is silly having to skirt around simple facts like someone's skin colour. If someone goes away on holiday in winter and comes back with a tan does that change them?

As I said, you can't say anything these days without people getting all self righteous and patronising. I think it is counter productive to solving real issues when people don't feel like they can be completely open.

Its really crazy how people talk about this position.
When I was coming up, centres were the shit. Guys like Steve Rogers were just beutiful to watch. Meninga and Miles, McGaw and ET, Renouf, Daley, Fittler...big athletic guys with speed to burn and great ball skills. Then the likes of Hodges, Gasnier, Ingliss and Mitchell carried on this trend. Even in Rugby Union back in the day, the centre pairing of Tim Horan and Jason Little ripped opposition sides to shreds. Ive made this call before but will again....Dally Messenger, Dave Brown, Bob Fulton, Reg Gasnier, Graeme Langlands, Mal Meninga - 6 of the 13 immortals played a lot of their careers there...4 of them pretty much exclusively.

There are some good centres in season 2024 of the NRL as well. Manu is currently the reigning Golden Boot owner. The Brisbane pairing of Staggs and Farnworth are very damaging as are the Penrith boys Chricton and Tago. Holmes, Graham and Olam are also weapons. A lot of teams such as ours chuck any old player into the centres. The good sides have specialists who are amongst their best players.

Morris would be a great assistant to Benji. Has runs on the board and knows him and Robbie from his playing days.

Also every coach seems to have a niche that they just seem to naturally specialise in, Morris's seems to be bringing youth through from lower to first grade. I might be mistaken but there were a few he brought up while Cronulla coach.

Just looks like there are some issues at South's and mentally he's checked out. He is one of those players that once in the right headspace is the best in the game. But can be temperamental.

The whole irony of it all is the fullbacks make the money, yet everyone iv spoken to who's played have all said centre is the hardest position to defend from, you have to know how to defend and know the teams defensive system inside out.

I'm not upset, though: I'm pointing out that you, and several others, are the ones who brought race into it. I'm totally fine to talk about something else but you are the one who introduced race to the conversation. And, completely predictably, having done so you immediately want to change the subject when you're challenged on your views.

So sure, fine: let's talk about something else. I'll just leave it here that your decision to make this a conversation about race has not been "silenced" - I've engaged with what you said in a reasonable, polite fashion as I would on any other topic you decided to raise that I have an opinion about. You've been "completely open" (I assume - or is there something else you'd like to say about Latrell Mitchell's race that you've not yet raised?) and I've expressed my disagreement. That's how discussion works.
