Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I’ll take Katoa. Those other three are too hit and miss.
Pongo is injured too frequently. Api is on deaths door as a player. Luai may come good, but he needs incredible improvement over 2025 form. None of them are leaders.
What you’re saying is wrong though . The thing that doesn’t make sense to me is the best player IMO to wear the Cowboys jersey is Taumalolo , he’s lost a step , but his whole reputation was built on fitness and aggression and pure tenacity . At his best he’s like a freight train that never stops .
I don’t think the “lazy islander” idea , is true anymore . Simply because coach’s arnt picking them because they’re massive anymore . Especially in nsw being massive isn’t anything anymore . It’s a start sure , but where I am , the kids are huge . I watched an u15s game a couple of years ago , and I’m 183cm, an almost all of the 34 players were taller than me , I thought I was watching u19s. And someone corrected me. The kids are simply bigger stronger faster these days , and being massive and lazy doesn’t get you through . No matter what your background is . If it’s an apathy thing re. Islanders are notoriously chill an hard to motivate , I don’t think that’s the case either . Only the most competitive make it through . Especially out of the Penrith system , where a fair chunk of our team come from .
Even Miller the front rower we cut last year or the year before , 10 years ago that kid has a 5-10 year career and bounces around the nrl with shit attitude , and lack of development because everything thinks they can shine a diamond . He hasn’t been even looked at by other clubs since his cutting , and I heard is boxing now . I’ve spent a lot of my childhood around islanders , so I know what you’re talking about re. Motivation and culture , and a desire to be chill above all else , but the same dude who you swear wouldn’t hurt a fly , is also the same dude a lot of the time, who would put you in hospital if given the right motivation .
This is where Benji comes in . And I’m still on the fence / hopeful that he can translate his connection with the team , which is clear as day and inarguable , into wins . I guess the concern is , is he like Stephen Kearney before him , another guy who had the ear of the islander boys but couldn’t get above 500 most seasons . I dunno , but hopefully he has the right islander boys in the team who know how to help him. Because really that’s where 50% of the motivation comes from . The group itself . It’s why the Galvin debacle last year really screwed this team more than most . Because I think the culture is a bit siege mentality , you’re one of us or you’re not . And as we saw last year it just imploded the team when 1 guy or maybe 2 with TDS clearly weren’t .

I don’t think he did start from a very poor place at all.
The coaches previous to him did. He started with a team that was being strengthened, had a hugely experienced coach over seeing him and after his first year a top administrator backing him.
He has had everything handed to him on a platter and is already well into his fourth year here. Management have also backed him all the way, gifting him a contract extension this pre season. A lot of the players back him.
His results don’t match all of this.
The numbers don’t lie. In two years as head coach he’s increased our wins by 50% each year.

The same result this year would see us scrape into the eight.

I think our young forward pack and the off field stuff will likely derail that, but it’s harsh to not recognise that we are improving.

You have completely missed the point again.
You can’t say this bloke hasn’t had the cattle when he has been in charge of recruitment since mid 2022. He has been able to get a host of experienced players to join the club. He has built this team.
Making excuses for a coach who isn’t getting results isn’t being positive. Suggesting ways to strengthen this department isn’t complaining. This is a forum where ideas are exchanged. I think he desperately needs help.
At the end of the day, Benji is a rookie coach who was appointed the head NRL coach by HBG when he had no experience as a coach. The same HBG extended him to 2030 after he got the spoon and finished 13th.

Ill humour you for a moment and assume Benji did have full control of the roster since 2022... Wtf does that say about HBG decision to give him the contract they just did?

I actually find this whole concept of Benji having control of the roster since 2022 hilarious...I can assure you that Tim Sheens and Warren Mcdonnel were not taking their queues from an inexperienced assistant coach. They may have involved him in recruitment and even used him to convince players to come on board, however he was not in control. You may find that some of this recruitment incompetence esp Bateman, Klemmer and some of the junior player deals were what got them punted from their roles.

Honestly Rock Hopper Steve, if you are here for positivity. Your at the wrong place.

Thinking about duds. We had Papalii, Klemmer and Bateman.

Klemmer was a dud and I couldn't see it. Quickly punted from St George.

Papalii is playing finals footy with Penrith. Not a dud.

Bateman, bateman is weird. So at the Cowboys he has done a stack of Tackling and defensive work. Yet the cowboys defense is called out as their main weakness. I don't get it, you have a stack of big forward players and you add Bateman, yet their defense went backwards.
I never said Papi was a dud as usual you don't keep up with reading posts and reply without all the facts.
You can't chain them to the railing at Concord if they don't want to stay mate, agree on Papi he was looking good at lock when he left, Blore was let go for Olam which hurt but I wouldn't swap him for what we have now.

Steff of last season yes, but his last year was pussy-cat stuff for us, TDS will see how this season goes to see if it comes back to bite us.

Man does it really help crying over spilt milk, I try to be positive before a season, if your not what's the point of even watching it.

Completely agree. Sheens made a statement that everything went through Benji, but it's like asking the on-site apprentice if he thinks something is good or not...it's somewhat influenced by what the boss wants...

And anyone giving complete control to a total rookie is an idiot and isn't the fault of the rookie himself.

I only judge Benji from when he officially became head coach. I think that's the only fair way to assess it.

Don't we all know that when Benji started he was on his L plates, what were you expecting instant success, last season you could say it was the last year of his P's and I'd be expecting now for him to show something more from what he's learnt probably the hardest way at this club.

If this season doesn't improve again than he should seek more help for the coaching dep.
