Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Very funny, you worry about corruption but want to give money to the AOC. How about FIFA and the IOC while we are at it? Always money well spent
I never mentioned FIFA or the IOC so your comments are ridiculous. It's $600M dollars that could be better spent elsewhere rather than on a sport in a 3rd world country where corruption and violence are endemic .
From 1972 to today, Australia has provided more than A$20 billion in aid to Papua New Guinea - I guess adding another $600M will change absolutely nothing.

The way the world is heading I’d rather have nuclear subs protecting us than a PNG league team that is going to get flogged every week.

Did you note the price difference I highlighted ?

I would rather not have Chinese bases potentially on PNG though ..and that for a price of $600m

The subs at $300billion for about 8 and not nuclear armed … not sure what benefit they will have against drones, aircraft and missiles of the next war

The PNG government has a significant history of corruption - the presence of a NRL team won't stop a future government selling out if the price is right. Wait until one of the major teams lose stars they howling will be deafening.

Any deal with China in the future and the NRL team is pulled ..

This is what they wanted to stay loyal..and what China can’t give them… I don’t think a team in the Chinese basketball league has the same appeal

We wont lose 6...heck i dont think there has ever been a.player exodus worse than the Magpies losing 5 in 1980...thatll be almost 50 years .
Yes some clubs will be affected.more than others...whatddya do..weve already accepted the NRLs pay off as has all the others
With 2 NRL teams coming in on average across 2x 30 man squads then every club loses 3-4. I mean you look at the Storm lost 4 to Dolphins, now have lost 2 already to Perth and thats with PNG and Perth still with plenty of spots to fill. Its likely some clubs lose 5 or 6 across the top 30s.

I mean we have already lost 3 to Perth and 1 to PNG

That is correct, but based on media reports, rumours and guesswork based on what other similar quality of players are reportedly being paid, we will 100% be struggling to keep all our current squad together for 2027 and beyond unless we either get all the ones we want to keep who are off contract at the end of 2026 or 2026 to agree to stay with us for bargain basement contract values, or we cut somebody loose.
Looking at other teams
If the Tigers are going to struggle to fit under the salary cap what about we look at a couple of examples

Newcastle elite money players
Ponga
Brown

Next level
B.Best
F.Sharp

Broncos
Elite money players
Walsh
Carrigan

Next Level
Staggs
E.Mam

Wests Tigers
Elite money player
Luai

Next level
Not confirmed (Bula)

The Tigers should have no issues fitting under the salary cap.

I argued earlier that the way our team has evolved you could not say that one player is standing out and winning us games on a regular basis, in fact the players are that are consistently best on field, AD, Twal, Api and KPP are signed longer term on reasonable deals. I think we are a team that will have more of your second tier and more evenly spread...especially post 2028 when our Marquee is gone. I would also argue that this is where you want to be as a club, that way injuries and contract dramas should have less of an impact on the squads longer term performance.

Some clubs have multiple of players on $1m each we will have plenty of $$

I think you are right.

Scanning down the team...

Long term:
Luai - fat lot of good that did.
AD
Twal
Api
KPP
Fainu Brothers (at least 2/3 are signed longer term. I know Sione is locked down, unsure Samuela).

Shorter term:
Terrell May - Must sign now.
Turuva
Taylan May
Pole?

Skelton may be on the chopping block still. I suspect after this we can stretch to cover him.

Samuela & Latu are musts! & I think with Sione committed plus Manese a chance for next year they will stay.

Pole likely starts but Bula's decision may influence that, that's a wait & see.

The May's & Turuva I am not confident.

If they go we have Tavana for right wing after Turuva.

Makasini who we also need to extend but is left centre after TayMay.

Terrell leaves a big whole but... $1.2m we can land a marquee middle.

Let's hope we get a few extension emails sooner rather than later but I feel they'll all be all in for this year & next.

Luai would be smart enough to know it would be unlikely PNG are a premiership treat immediately.

Never

Basically Murdoch (?) pumped NRL on tv into PNG.

None of the pacific countries other then PNG have NRL as their national sport.
You don't understand till you go there.

People die during Origin.
Husbands kill wives, wives kill husbands over Blues vs Maroons.
You are spot on. Some places have banned Origin on tv because of that reason. Not sure how they enforce it but I read about the violence during Origin a while ago.

Suli hasn't realised his potential cause his a lazy player
He seemed to have one really good season when he was over at Manly, seemed to be in beast mode for the best part of the season and then very little (almost nothing) since or prior to it.

Yeah, you are right I suspect that he is just a lazy bludger and that training most likely still consists of a nap out in the car park.

Wonder what he does after footy and if he is capable of having a crack at something out there in the real world.

Wasn’t Suli here at some stage? Got flicked for being regularly late to training if memory serves …

I was talking about in one hit....the Magpies in 1980 lost 5 origin and international players, theres really only 2 first graders youre talking about LL & JL, one is a rookie....Kit & Mav arent worth worrying about
But Dazz was talking about losing 6 established first graders in one hit to PNG... it is something all clubs have to deal with.....I doubt we'll stick with 19 teams either there will be another NZ team eventually...and then it starts all over again.
A 20 team comp how about that, does the NRL ever learn>?
