Jeez it would have been nice if we got Ponga in the offseason.

Ponga is lethal.
We got the next best thing tho in Mbye.
What a guy.

Same price too,
Can't tell if your being sarcastic or serious though.

Serious brah.
Mbye did not disappoint today.
He was a shining light amongst all the other repeat offenders of mediocrity and shame.

Realistically, Ponga is the man…
Who else is there that we could get? Nick Meany?
Mbye was the next best thing, legit.

Ah, right. I was thinking the same thing when we signed him. Hasn’t reached his ceiling yet.
Don’t agree that his just an athlete, think he has a fair bit of football IQ, that of which we lack in most of our squad.

It seemed like what we lacked most today was the aility to catch and hold the ball…

I think this guy is low key a draw.
Represents on foxtel, well spoken, has a big of swag to him…

His interview on the locker room (YouTube) he seems like a rly good personality too.
Think : Lote when he played for us.

He could be a rly important signing for us both on and off the field.

I understand, but I didn’t say today.
We lack players with football IQ. Players that always put themselves in the right position or come up with the right play, players that are wise enough to push the envelope but know when to stop, attack the ball in tackles or scrap for a lose ball. Read defencive rushes and put them in position for that cover tackle. Proably another thread but guys were saying N Cleary would not make a difference, but his understanding of the game is his biggest strength in his game at the moment. Brooks might be defending as well, have a strong running game in similarity but Clearys football IQ is what sets him apart.
Jack Wighton might be available next year?
I’m sure Ferguson still wants to live close to Sydney City, 2 players we could target for our outside backs next year.

I don't know why this comment is in this thread - why don't you start up a " I hate Campbelltown " thread and put it in there.

We need to have a mature debate about this issue. For better or worse, we've seen Woods, Moses, Brooks, Tatola, Douelhi and Suli emerge from the Balmain juniors. We've had Tedesco, Nofoaluma and Sue from Wests Campbelltown in fairly recent times. In terms of its size, we are not seeing quality or quantity. Is it that the best are being pilfered by other clubs; our talent identification and retention is not up to it? Can someone provide details?

Balmain must be like Qld. Local products like Suli (fairfield - Parramatta Harold Matthews), Tatola (Berala). Is like arguing that anyone that played for the roosters NYC side must be one of their local juniors. The only link between them is that the club signed them & sent them to Holy Cross.

As per my eariler post, what is the south west equivalent of Holy Cross?

The problem is talent identification. The tigers pay no more attention to the south west than other clubs, but I would say that they are actually at a disadvantage given some of the stories that circulate in junior leagues about how people had been treated.

Had the tigers identified & retained talent from the south west. then you could have seen Hayne, Falou, Hoffman, the Paea brothers, De Berlin (St Gregs), Tim Lafai, Paseka (Liverpool)

With Balmain it seems it does quite well identifying young talent. That should be encouraged, not denigrated, Suli and Tatola have been in the system for some time, but if talent identification is an issue in the South West, well Wests really need to look at this issue. Hopefully Cleary has inspired changed,

This is a good topic and probably should be on its own thread. We’ve gone through 700 odd pages looking at who’d be a good signing where you’d think with such a huge junior base in the south west there would be kids coming through.

It amazes me how Penrith just continually produce local juniors. Look at the ones they’ve had to let go e.g. Coote, Jennings x3, Moylan, Graham, MWZ…. So what’s the difference between them out west and us in the south west?

Is it because we haven’t properly invested in the area and we are still essentially an inner city club?

Is it the inability to spot talent?

Is the talent not there and the Penrith comparison is not valid?

It’s actually an issue I would have liked Pascoe and Cleary to address in one those Q&As.

And by the way who are the talent scouts for the area? Wests Magpies or Wests Tigers? Is this where the problem lies?

Nepotism and Incompetence are the 2 selectors for the catchment area in the SW and they have been for a long time.
The talent is there but the right people are not

If we sign Cleary who will be the other half

Cleary/Brooks
Cleary/Reynolds
Cleary/Gamble
Cleary/Benji

I just watched ISP - it won’t be Cleary/Gamble!

I watched the ISP match also and agree, he’d struggle to make a Park footy side. Liddle has a lot of gym work to do in the off season, very lightly built .

Gamble will head back to Q cup…
He hasn't got what it takes for first grade and if he's our starting half we're even worse than we thought.

We need to sign at least 10, if not 12, new players for next season.

I know there's only 8 spots open but we really need to get rid of the dead wood.

Also need 10 new players for ISP only contracts and an entire cleanout in Flegg. 40 odd new players at the club next season hopefully. We need to be bigger, faster and smarter. Other clubs manage to do this on a regular basis - yet 20 years later and we still can't do it.

Lol. Good plan.

All very well to say.

Who are these players?

Most importantly, do they want to come here?

I don't follow every other teams squads in great detail. The lure of almost guaranteed NRL football should be enough to lure some players. You look at some of the young players in the ISP sides for teams in the top 8\. There's a number who have pathways blocked. Yes we will need to pay a bit overs for some players but that's just the nature of the NRL.

Why go small with 10 that's a bit of conservative approach go big or go home 30 is a good number

The squad has no X factor and that's what it needs more then anything else the squad is soild other squads are better that's life if Clearly can get a great back row player for next year that would help alot and throw in a big strong fast back but is Clearly the kind of coach to splash the cash I think not to start growing them again is a long process but look towards Penrith ISP good young players there

We have to start building a team around Cleary / Brooks half combination .. we need players who can play off their style of game .. !! Like someone said in here, we need at least 10 or 12 new players. IC stated the other day that will be at least half a dozen, if not more new faces at the Tigers next season .. so that tells me, he has already been in contact new players who are interested in coming here .. ??

I can think of at least 8 or 9 players that we can release for next season on their current form.

I'll bet anything that the dogs are back playing finals footy before us. Were screwed.

Harsh.
Hope young Luke Garner is a break out star and becomes the man we need to partner our golden boy Lawrence in the second row.
