Here we are just all talking about trying to sign a quality player of some sorts to help us get better and we seem to struggle..
Alot of reasons for this but what gets my blood boiling is a team like the Roosters has a player out and media are saying they are down on troops but bring in a England International to replace Toopu.. Now Sorry but how is this fair when we cannot even sign a rep player and they have them coming out of the woodwork... I BEG the NRL to address this as I no a lot of friends of mine have stopped watching NRL because its the same teams every year and had enough.. Time to stop this rot

Yep there is certainly a lot wrong with the current system. Really the only fair way to spread talent is through a draft but the NRL don't seem to want to look at this option because of what happened almost 30 years ago. Industrial relations and the power of the NRL over players rights has changed dramatically since then. The De Belin case is the perfect example of the NRL having the power to restrain a player from plying his trade.
If ever they wanted to test the waters with a draft now would be the time after the De Belin decision. The obvious way to do would be with the mid season transfer window. All clubs who wish to move players on could put forward those players and the amount of freight they were prepared to carry. There would be a pool of players that would be made public. The freight and any negotiations would stay between clubs, players and NRL. It cuts out any backroom deals. A player might have 3 clubs interested and would have the final chance on whether to take up any offer or stay at the club he is at. Its not a true draft in that the player would have the final say on whether to stay or go but its an improvement on what happens now and is far more transparent.
Also this rubbish of being able to sign a player 12 months prior to finishing his contract has to go. We keep hearing that the NRL is a business. What other industry allows you to sign a contract with a competitor but not have to take it up until 12 months time. I'd like to see any player who hasn't resigned with his club prior to the end of his contract go in to a pool on November 1 at the end of his contract as a free agent and all clubs can negotiate. The NRL would have final call on registering and salary cap issues. Yes it is similar to what happens now and player will still end up where they wanted to go but it may take away that feeling of dirty deals being done and hopefully would be more transparent than the current system.
Hopefully one day soon the NRL has the guts to put a proper draft system in place but unfortunately i can't see this happening while ever people like Politis are pulling the strings.

The ONLY way to get a player draft is to get agreement with the players union - but they won’t just agree they would want something big in return.

Noe remember the last bargaining agreement?

The players would get an increase in all of game funding, (was it 25%?), for better promotion of the game. How did that work out?

Pre-season from hell.

Good luck.

As soon as I see "knocked back more money to stay" the alarm bells start to ring. It just seems funny that its usually only players at the rorters or the broncos who "knock back more money to stay" at a club where in a lot of cases their chances are limited. On the other hand clubs like us find that players "leave for less money'' than they could have got by staying. Must all be above board though - the NRL says so.

Love how the article says they knocked back more money from other clubs. :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:
:moneybag: will be in other ways.

Sometimes I think our only chance for a fair comp is if the ATO come and bust down some doors. Come on ATO, NRL is practically an organised crime syndicate - all these wages being paid without tax, and they're all in on it. From players to players' families to player managers, clubs, NRL administration, club CEOs, NRL CEOs.

NRL will never change from within, they are rotten to the core. They need external pressure to uproot the disease. Every organisation needs something over them to keep them in line, NRL is no different, but it is long overdue.

@TigerTiger Agree 100%. The ATO has the power but I reckon there would have to be some huge stink somewhere with a player 'telling all' before the ATO would jump. Look how tenderfoot the NRL has been over bringing the player managers into line, the club CEO's are still not really being punished for transgressions under their watch and the coaches and players seem to be able to get away with saying its not my problem defying credulity, but the NRL wont do a damn thing.

That's right he signed for way less than the million dollars reported they told everyone, but now he has left they will have $1.5 million to spend.

I can pm those that want to know how they paid their players outside of the cap in the early 2000s. Just let me know.
