I was just watching the Tim Moltzen youtube clip and gee we've missed a player with his evasiveness and speed around the park. What a wonderful mover with the ball, just seemed to glide over the grass.

Moltz was archetype Tigers - all attack, no D, no starch. In some ways I do miss they days of losing 40-32 rather than 18-10.

Just heard a rumour that tyson frizell wants out of dragons... asking for a release...... likely to sign with rorters...oh what a surprise.....

Wouldnt mind him

Since been shot down but you have to ask the question. If Frizell did ask for a release to join the Roosters, considering nobody is allowed to talk to him until November 1, then how would he know which club he was seeking a release to join?

It would just be a given wouldn’t it? Origin player -> Roosters

The stress seems less when both teams have high scores, and a scrapping it out

@Cultured_Bogan ...CB that the tricky part, but there must be a system of putting all players into half a dozen baskets and putting a point value on the baskets. Than throw in some discounts for juniors and long serving players. I would even put a penalty loading on clubs who take juniors from other clubs, but that will never happen

I personally think it's no better than a salary cap.

Firstly you probably run into restraint of trade issues by arbitrarily handicapping player values. If Player X is given points value Y, then you have directly influenced his salary power. This becomes a problem if clubs believe that Player X is over-valued by the NRL, or Player X high value prevents them from fitting into the prospective team. This is different from salary cap because that restrains club spending, not player value; clubs are free to set whatever value they choose.

Just imagine the first player to challenge their value grading in court, then the whole thing comes down. Don't forget Terry Hill and the planned draft!

Secondly any points system technically favours rich clubs again - they can afford to pay whatever they please for the "best value" players. So rich clubs are empowered to just snap up the best players in each value range

Thirdly, introducing constant arguments on the set value of players. Think of the million opinions in fantasy football, then the eventual system-wide avalanche on certain high-output players once the scoring system plays out over a few rounds.

Do you modify player values year to year, round to round? What happens if you sign a junior Player on a 4-year deal and his set value skyrockets mid-contract? Or what if you leave set values in place for the duration of the contract? The latter is obvious - rich clubs again stockpile low-value high-potential players.

The best alternative system, as I see it, is reintroduction of the draft. Have the NRL take over junior development nation-wide, with all emerging players funneled into the draft. An agreement has to be reached with clubs and RLPA before the draft goes live, with safeties for minimum player salaries and compensation, away-from-home allowance etc. You then make the draft a condition of future club registration with NRL.

G'day @balmain-boy: Re your "so from what you are saying it's the like of Patrick Mago". I have a feeling your spelling of his surname may be incorrect. I think it may be Patrick Magoo...[no offence inferred or intended to you balmain boy or to Mr Magoo. Have a great footy day :relaxed: :relaxed: :relaxed:

@jirskyr The sad situation for the WTs is Moltzen had more ability on his little finger than all except 2 players in our current backline notwithstanding he was far faster than nearly all our backline.

Has @snake been up to no good again? TYGA re your "the salary cap mess the snake left us in". And I have been saying 'nice' things about him!!! :white_frowning_face: :relaxed: :white_frowning_face: :relaxed: [no offence inferred or intended to you TYGA or @Snake]

Yeah but how ordinary were his kick returns and how often did he fail to put his body on the line for bombs? Tim Moltzen was a terrific touch-footballer and, at times, masterful attack weapon. His all-around game however was sorely lacking for his entire career.

Why on earth not? @Russell: Many good RU players have transferred over to Our great game of League and become superstars, not forgetting it was the breakaway of players from RU that started Rugby League way back in the early 1900's. Have a great day Russell :relaxed:

WOWEE!!! @jirskyr, you have put a lot of thought into this post. I believe you deserve a cold beverage mate, well done :relaxed:

The recruitment strategy that brought Taupau, Koribete, JAC, Aloai and Twal is what we need. I’m keen to see what no names we sign.

How many wonderful Rugger players have made it in League over the past 50 years - I daresay not many more than a handful. I'm talking good players here not your average Joe.

To bring over a good one - the percentages are stacked against us. Much better to look in your own backyard or to ESL - the percentages are better.

Que somebody to come up with a list..... who will it be?

@Russell ..the elite rugby players are earning more playing union than they can get playing league so that is why we don’t see them coming across.

When rugby was a amateur game we saw a steady flow across to league and plenty were successful, granted 90% were backs.

Of course it all could change as it seems like rugby in Australia is very much on the decline from grass roots up

Hopefully Hartigan starts by raiding some of the roosters that are on the cusp of NRL

@jirskyr I don't agree Any player who plays NRL is courageous. Molten would be welcome d with open arms in our team. When you have Tuiaki on one wing and Beau on the other it makes sense to use them?
