Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

You can’t make players come to your club if they don’t want to, and it would appear plenty do not want to come to the Tigers. The question that has to be asked, is what are the club doing about it. Okay we have had some real success in attracting some very good young talent, but if they make the grade in a couple of years will they stick around, especially if the club continues to miss the finals. Also will this young talent kick on with out some really quality mentors.

Iam a long time fan and will turn up every season, but even my interest for the first time in 50 years is on the decline, so I worry that without success our club is in real strife and without some real quality it is not going to happen

You get the feeling young players wanting to push their careers forward see us as a transit lounge for more money

They can get a start at a NRL club and push up their value and reputation

Short term loss if they don't get to a finals series , but their next move will

Taupau , Mitch Moses , Matterson , Austin ,Lodge ....wonder who is next on the list

failed to value some of our best junior talent in the past. I refer to Korobeite, JAC and Papenhuyzen. We also had poor coaches who appeared ill equipped to identify and harness their talents. Hopefully this will never happen again.

Papenhuyzen left before Teddy, nothing could be done to stop that one.

Missing the Semis 3 years in a row is terrible. 8 is ridiculous. Do we look more likely to make the 8 in 2020... no

At the moment it is impossible to say with certainty because we don't know what players have been purchased.

Tigers made a choice to run with Tedesco and it burned them in the long term. Tedesco was the pick out of the two at the time and the club acted accordingly.

We should have demonstrated more love. I remember the comments about the kid been too small and injury prone yet he gets hit hard and bounces back up. We failed big time with these three players.

Not sure how much love you can offer a kid in that situation. No way he was going to play first grade, and Melbourne offered him a Contract.

It's been non existant or bad for years. Every year quality players move clubs but rarely to us.

Get that Galllagher but in the here and now - which I refer to - the "quality players" that we allegedly have missed out on are few and far between and Maguire/ Hartigan can't be held accountable for what happened before they got here.

Lomax and Scott would have been handy

Agree with Scott. Lomax happy where he was not much you can do about that.

I think we could've tried to entice Brimson away from the Titans as well, but we were too focused on Mitchell at the time. Tetevano was also up for grabs, even though many on here are probably happy we didn't sign him.

I'm not pointing the finger at those two, or the chairman. But nearing a decade of missing the finals, you have to question our management, its not laying the boot in.

I'm all for accountability I would argue that the current management structure is too. My objection was about the perception that there has been a number of quality players available that we have missed out on that we were in position to sign recently, when there hasn't been.

That's true, but mis-management put us in the position where we didn't have the cap space.

Happy- that list is a bit skewif. The only one we let escape when trying to keep was Taupau. Moses and Matterson just wanted out with Moses actually playing the mental health card and Matterson was not far off doing it too- spoilt brats. Lodge was sacked for his episode in New York and rightly so after several past indiscretions. Austin (and Papenhauzen) wanted fulltime gigs in their positions and the club already Moses and Tedesco in front of them in those positions, we couldnt give them what they wanted.

I agree though that our recruitment and retention has been bad, along with succession planning and keeping those flagged for promotion actually at the club and in the know, and appropriate time to tap on the shoulder those whose time is up.

The Tigers are showing discipline with signing targets and not paying overs. They are only going to offer extreme talents and proven origin level player big money. The reality of this is we will not get players as we are viewed as a weak club by players and player managers. We are doing things the right way and I applaud it. We need to build from within there’s plenty of talent on the roster Twal, Mikalele, Aloai, Leilua, Garner, MCK, Thompson, Mbye, Nofa, Brooks, Liddle, Seyfarth, Momirovski. Some veterans that can also help Packer, Benji, ET, Lawrence.

The club has identified rightly we are 2-3 strike players away from contention. If you can’t attract them you have to sign/develop younger players to make it happen.

I’d rather no news than paying overs for players who make us slightly better it will hurt in the longer term. The Storm hardly recruit any big names they sign them young and develop them mostly. Smith, Cronk, Slater, Inglis, Folau, Bromwich, NAS, Munster, Papynhuyzen, JAC, Vunivalu, Finucane, Chambers. I can’t think of any origin players they signed from another club.

They came with little or no reputation , getting little game time and left once they had established themselves (bar Matterson ) Matterson was motivated by money clearly .....

Spin it whatever way you want .........WT's aren't many NRL player's cup of tea

Good post Tyga.

I think it is actually a sign of positive change that Musgrove, leilua & Parra Kid are the only signings. The three of them seem good signings at good value.

IMO in the past this club would have filled as many spots as they can with robert jennings/Jordan Rankin/Robbie Rochow signings.

This year we have $$$ and open slots and they to date havent been filled with dross. Thats a nice change.

All well and good, it means another year (at least) of struggling to make the 8. I still think we need that 1 strike player to sign, then we're good. Fingers still crossed for JAC, Ive given up on LM.
