Soccer Super Thread

Why don’t you explain it then?
To me it looks completely adhoc…just boot it towards the opposition goal and if you manage to get close enough, flog it across the face and hope someone sticks a head or leg out there to deflect it in. After more than 2 hours of play the other night, neither team accomplished what seems like a pretty standard task for professionals.

Despite this, it is almost impossible to escape the over the top fawning coverage they are getting. People crying in the streets, grown men screaming like they are at the colosseum and the media calling them superstars and heroes of the nation. See the silly soyboy post above for reference.

You are right, I don’t get it. I’m wondering why so many apparently do. Is it just social justice concerned?
Dont shoot bambi!!!

Spain through to the final after a 2-1 win over Sweden. Overall I think they were slightly the better team and deserved to win, their young substitute turned the game at a time when Sweden was building pressure.
The main thing is I didn’t see anything in Spains play to really terrify us should we be able to knock off the Poms tomorrow night.
If we can win tomorrow then imo we can win the whole thing.

Yeah, I think same.

Tomorrow will be extremely tough but if they can get through that, I reckon they’ll win the Final.

It’s evident that you’re not a fan of the sport which is fine but don’t understand the negativity towards our women’s national team progressing to the semi-final of a major tournament.
Certainly not a fan. To me it’s a very frustrating sport to watch.
That is beside the point though.

You state I’m negative towards them progressing. Wrong again. I’ve written congratulatory posts in here a few times now. I hope they win it.
My point was that I watched the entire game on Saturday night and it pissed me off…until the shootout. The bandwagon support is also confusing me. I get that they are cheering on a national team, but comments like this is a life changing event for this country worries me. There’s enough garbage on tv now without adding to it with more soccer.

You’re not emotionally invested in the sport that’s cool mate we all have things we’re not interested in but don’t see the need to just shit on the product & rain down on people who are happy to see their National team in a FIFA World Cup semi final.

Already asked and answered.
How about answer my question? Why has the groundswell behind this team become so massive so quickly? I get that they are over-achieving given their pre tournament ranking, but they aren’t flashy, not particularly entertaining and the competition isn’t of high calibre. There are comparisons with the Americas Cup win already. There is talk of public holidays, should they win.
The bandwagon is incredible and people are going way overboard. I’ve not seen this before. Care to elaborate?

Football is the worlds most popular sport & a FIFA World Cup is one of the biggest tournaments in the world & our girls have made it through to the semi finals. The country is getting behind them & rightfully so, it’s a wonderful sight to see. The same thing was happening last year when the Men made it to the last 16.
