Aston Villa take down Manchester City 2-1.
Nicolas Jackson's well-taken double for Aston Villa ended Manchester City's 100% winning start to the Premier League season.

City had taken maximum points from their first seven league games but Enzo Maresca's team fell to their first defeat against a Villa side who have an exceptional recent record against them.

This victory was Villa's fifth in their past seven meetings against City, a fourth successive win against them at Villa Park and came on the fourth anniversary of Unai Emery's appointment as manager.

Villa captain John McGinn pounced on a poor touch by City defender Marc Guehi to play in Jackson, who turned inside Elliot Anderson and finished high into the net past Gianluigi Donnarumma for the hosts' opener.

Iliman Ndiaye hit the post as the visitors pressed for an equaliser, which eventually arrived early in the second period when Erling Haaland climbed highest to nod in Ndiaye's cross from the right.

However, parity lasted only eight minutes as Jackson met substitute Ibrahim Mbaye's low cross with a first-time shot that went in underneath Donnarumma's left hand.

Another goalbound Haaland header late on was cleared to safety by Ian Maatsen as Villa registered their first home league win of the season.

City's lead at the Premier League summit remains at three points, with second-placed Arsenal hosting Everton at 15:00 BST, while Villa have climbed into the top half of the table.

Arsenal moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table with a comfortable home victory over Everton.

Defenders Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes scored the goals to lift Arsenal to 21 points, to join City who had earlier lost at Aston Villa.

The opening goal came in the seventh minute after early Arsenal pressure helped them win three corners in a row, with Konsa bundling in his first goal for the club at the back post. It was also the Gunners' first goal from a set-piece this season.

James Garner and Tyrique George both had efforts at goal as Everton chased an equaliser, but they could not find a way past home keeper David Raya.

But the Gunners were the dominant side in the opening 45 minutes, registering 13 shots and winning 10 corners.

They picked up where they left off after the break and it was no surprise that Gabriel Magalhaes joined his centre-back partner on the scoresheet when he headed in Ben White's cross in the 68th minute.

Everton almost pulled one back late in the game when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall flicked a header just wide.

Oscar Bobb's late goal made it back-to-back Premier League wins for Fulham as they claimed a 1 nil victory at Coventry City.

In a game which otherwise lacked quality, Bobb weaved past a defender in a crowded penalty area before whipping an excellent strike into the bottom corner to score the game's only goal.

In the first half, it was Fulham's Josh King who came closest to delivering an opener when he sent an effort crashing off the crossbar. The rebound then fell to Alex Iwobi but he was unable to convert from close range.

For Coventry, the bulk of their most threatening moments came when Brandon Thomas-Asante led counter-attacks, but they were unable to find an end product.

Fulham had claims for a penalty rejected shortly before the break as Calvin Bassey was judged to have tugged his opponent's shirt before being dragged down by Thomas-Asante in the box.

Coventry were dealt a blow when defender Bobby Thomas, a shining light this season in a backline which has come up against difficult tests, was forced off with an injury in the 60th minute.

They continued to absorb pressure and search for chances on the break, but were unable find a way to open the scoring despite making some dangerous, quick moves.

A first away league win in nine matches moves Fulham up to 12th in the table on eight points, two above Coventry. The Sky Blues are 19th.

Tottenham won 2 zip at Stamford Bridge for only the second time in the league for 36 years as 10-man Chelsea were beaten at home.

England midfielder Cole Palmer was also sent off in the 80th minute for two bookings to complete a miserable evening for Xabi Alonso's side.

Spurs had taken the lead three minutes earlier in fortunate circumstances.

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, on his first league start for the Blues after Emi Martinez suffered a fractured jaw against Everton, punched the ball into his own net when he jumped under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke at a corner.

French forward Mathys Tel added a second in the 87th minute with a low strike from 25 yards out following a fine individual run from the halfway line.

The match was played in torrential rain and it was stormy on the pitch too in a fiery derby encounter.

Palmer picked up his two bookings in a nine-minute spell, either side of Tottenham's opener. His first yellow card came when he barged into Mateus Fernandes, with the second following a late challenge on Conor Gallagher.

Spurs moved up to 12th place, having won two matches in a week after they gained their first league victory of the campaign on Monday with a 3-1 home win over Coventry City.

As much as it was deserved, it was unexpected given their wretched record at the home of their London rivals.

Tottenham had won just one of their last 36 league visits to Stamford Bridge with 11 draws and 24 losses. The only previous victory in that run had come on 1 April, 2018 when Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs won 3-1 against a Chelsea side managed by Antonio Conte.

Before that, you had to go back to 10 February, 1990, in the old Division One when a Spurs team led by Terry Venables won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge against Bobby Campbell's Chelsea side.

Richard Kone scored a hat-trick inside the first 15 minutes as Queens Park Rangers claimed a remarkable 5-0 victory over high-flying Swansea City.

Kone, who had not scored since April, steered Rangers in front from Paul Smyth's pass inside two minutes before heading home a classy second from Kwame Poku's cross.

The Ivory Coast international striker completed his treble from the penalty spot after Smyth was brought down by goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

Swansea had conceded the fewest goals in the Championship before their trip to Loftus Road, but the Welsh side's defensive collapse continued as Jimmy Dunne headed in Rangers' fourth goal from a Harvey Vale corner in first-half stoppage time.

The Swans had their moments going forward, with Adam Idah's 20-yard drive touched on to the bar by a diving Pierce Charles before Melker Widell shot too close to the Rangers goalkeeper in a chaotic first period.

But QPR put the gloss on a memorable afternoon when Dunne prodded in his second as Swansea failed to deal with another set-piece late on.

Swansea's second straight defeat - and their most chastening loss of what had previously been a season full of promise - meant Vitor Matos' team missed the chance to return to the summit of the Championship, though they remain in the top two.

Rangers, meanwhile, climb back into the play-off spots courtesy of a second successive emphatic home win.

James Bree scored a stunning goal as Southampton impressively beat West Ham United 3-2 at the London Stadium.

Saints fired themselves in front after just two minutes when Kuryu Matsuki slotted the ball into the far corner before Bree struck from a tight angle.

Kyle Walker-Peters placed a finish into the top corner to get the Hammers back into the game but the visitors scored again before the break when Lewis Dobbin found the net from close range.

Tomas Soucek came off the bench to score in injury time, but despite late chances the hosts were unable to draw level.

The result pushed Tonda Eckert's side up to sixth in the Championship table, two points behind third-placed West Ham, who are a point off the automatic promotion spots.

The visiting Saints stunned the West Ham supporters into silence after a fast start in east London.

Leo Scienza broke into the area and fired a shot straight at Mads Hermansen which then fell to Matsuki who was able to stroke the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Saints then doubled their lead when Caspar Jander's cross was tipped to the other side of the West Ham box by Hermansen.

The clearance flew only as far as Bree who allowed the ball to bounce before brilliantly rifling his finish into the top corner of the net from a tight angle.

West Ham sprung into life in the 24th minute when Walker-Peters showed some neat footwork before sending a brilliant strike into the top left-hand corner of the net.

But Eckert's side then scored again when they broke up the other end and Scienza had another effort saved from close range.

On this occasion Dobbin was on hand to poke the ball home from a matter of feet, running off to celebrate in front of a shocked London Stadium.

Saints came close to a fourth in the second half when Finn Azaz played a delightful pass to Dobbin whose low shot struck the outside of the right-hand post.

After an hour of play Max Kilman came so close to getting his side back into the game, walloping a strike from the edge of the box towards the top corner.

But his effort hit the woodwork before bouncing onto the diving Daniel Peretz and behind for a corner.

Substitute Soucek made an impact late on when his injury time strike found the bottom right-hand corner in added time but ultimately it was not enough for the hosts with loud boos heard at the full-time whistle.

Will Lankshear scored twice to become the first Championship player to hit double figures this season as Middlesbrough dazzled in winning 5-1 over Bolton Wanderers to go top of the Championship.

Lankshear took his league tally to 11 in just 12 games as Kim Hellberg's side turned on the style at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Former Bolton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry added a goal and assist after Aidan Morris opened the scoring for the Teessiders and Lewis Brunt deflected Adilson Malanda's header into his own net.

Bolton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu stopped Wanderers losing by even more and Theo Bair's strike was of little consolation.

The game turned on 26 seconds in the 13th minute when Ruben Rodrigues shot weakly at Middlesbrough goalkeeper Radek Vitek and the visitors raced upfield to open the scoring through Morris.

Boro broke down the left and when they switched to the right, Cozier-Duberry, who helped Bolton win promotion from League One last season, centred for Morris to score from five yards out.

Rodrigues did better with a 20-yard drive, saved by Vitek, before Bazunu did well to deny Cozier-Duberry and Lankshear.

But there was no stemming the Boro tide and they sliced Bolton open on 31 minutes when Tommy Conway centred for Lankshear to tap home.

Bolton could not live with Middlesbrough and they bagged a third eight minutes later when Sebastian Berhalter sent over a corner, which should not have been given because it came off Conway, for Adilson Malanda to connect with a header, which was deflected home by Brunt.

Boro's one weakness is their leaky defence and they shipped their 17th league goal of the campaign when Gaizka Larrazabal fed Bair and he pulled a goal back in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

Bazunu stood out for Bolton and the Republic of Ireland international made another fine stop to thwart Lankshear.

Boro were just too good, despite Bolton's second-half improvement, and Cozier-Duberry made it 4-1 on 73 minutes when he finished expertly into the roof of the net from his weaker right foot before Lankshear tapped in to finish off a rapid counter-attack.

Nottingham Forest moved out of the Premier League relegation zone but were again left to rue missed chances as they were held to a 1 all draw by Ipswich at Portman Road.

Oliver Glasner's side dominated large periods of the game and took a deserved lead in the 13th minute when Neco Williams cushioned home Daniel Munoz's right-wing cross at the back post for his first Forest goal since April.

The returning Morgan Gibbs-White also had an effort saved by the toe of Town keeper Christian Walton before Leif Davis hacked the ball off the line.

Ipswich made Forest pay in the 41st minute when Nikola Milenkovic dwelt on the ball and his eventual backpass was too short and allowed Julio Enciso to collect and slot past Matz Sels for his first goal for the club since his summer move.

There was a controversial moment three minutes into the second half when Forest midfielder James McAtee was brought down by home defender Issa Diop when attempting to break through on goal.

Referee Thomas Bramall initially waved play on but the video assistant referee (VAR) recommended an on-field review for a red card for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity. But, after reviewing the footage, Bramall opted to award a yellow card and a free-kick, explaining that McAtee "had knocked the ball to the right side of the goal".

Forest boss Glasner told Sky Sports it was a "clear red card", but he "liked" the referee going to the screen and following the "right procedure".

That seemed to light a spark in his side, who went on to miss numerous chances to seal a second victory of the season after a disappointing start under Glasner.

An unmarked Murillo headed a corner wide, Dan Ndoye had an effort cleared off the line by the outstretched leg of Davis and striker Liam Delap headed over from six yards and whipped a low effort just wide as he returned to his former club.

Callum Hudson-Odoi also dragged an effort off target in late pressure from the visitors, while Jack Clarke curled wide at the other end for Gary O'Neil's men.

After three straight defeats, the point moved Forest above Coventry City and Tottenham up to 16th place on six points, although they could end the weekend back in the bottom three, while Ipswich are ninth.

New recruits shine as Roar defeat Perth Glory 2-1 in Brisbane

Brisbane Roar have opened their A-League Men campaign with a 2-1 win over Perth Glory at Suncorp Stadium, with goals from Justin Vidic and star recruit Nam Tae-hee.

A wonder strike by South Korea international Nam Tae-hee has lit up Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane Roar’s 2-1 win over Perth Glory.

High-profile signing Nam, playing his first A-League Men match for the club, struck in the 42nd minute with a goal of pure class on Friday night to get the Roar’s campaign off to a winning start.

The attacking midfielder tipped a bouncing ball up for himself just outside the box and then let rip with a right-foot rocket into the roof of the net.

Striker Justin Vidic opened the scoring for the Roar in the 28th minute.

The Glory hit back on the hour mark when substitute Matthew Ellis scored with his first touch in the ALM after being on the field for just 33 seconds.

Ellis’s strike came after a shocking back pass by Roar defender Joel King, who was playing his first game for the club after a move from Sydney FC.

Stefan Colakovski should have equalised but sprayed his shot with an open goal in front of him.

The Roar fielded seven new players in their starting side and most of them provided impetus.

Full back Tate Russell set up the opening goal after working hard to intercept goalkeeper Matthew Sutton’s throw out and then delivering a pinpoint cross for Vidic to steer home.

The Roar, after finishing a disappointing 11th last season, started well with the midfield in control.

The deadly left foot of Tyrese Francois has received rave reviews from coach Michael Valkanis in the pre-season. Defender Tom Aldred set him up beautifully but the former Fulham midfielder shot just wide from outside the box.

Vidic, who was everywhere, headed just over the bar not long after scoring as winger Sabit Ngor, formerly with Central Coast, created plenty of chances.

Pieter Jacobsz had the Glory’s best chance in the first half when he had an open goal to hit but sprayed his left-foot shot wide.

Striker Tom Lawrence also fired wide just after the break as Perth failed to capitalise on chances.

Roar goalkeeper George Plusnin, in his first ALM match, was composed but was not put under enough pressure by the visitors.

The Roar welcomed back former stalwart skipper Aldred to the side after two seasons in India and he excelled in the captain’s armband.

Wellington Phoenix make history as Duran and Piper strike to down Central Coast Mariners 2 nil.

A scintillating second-half display saw Wellington Phoenix defeat Central Coast Mariners 2-0 at Hnry Stadium on Sunday afternoon to move top of the A-League men ladder.

The result saw Chris Greenacre’s side carve out their own piece of club history, with the win over the Mariners making it two wins from two to start an A-League Men season for the very first time.

In typical Wellington fashion the wind was whipping around Hnry Stadium on Sunday afternoon and it only added to the chaos on the pitch inside the opening 45 minutes.

The Mariners came within an inch of breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute as Oli Lavale raced through on goal and dinked the ball beyond the advancing Henry Gray but defender Bill Tuiloma somehow got back and hooked the effort off the line in the nick of time.

Wellington thought they’d scored the opener as Rafael Duran broke the offside trap and squared for Corban Piper to convert beyond Andrew Redmayne. However replays subsequently revealed Mexican Duran was an inch offside and the goal was therefore chalked off.

Both sides traded chances before the half was out but while the deadlock remained in tact at half-time, it was duly broken in the 55th minute.

After American Bryce Duke saw a header well saved by Redmayne Wellington then worked the ball back into the danger zone, with Duran perfectly positioned to head Matthew Sheridan’s cross into the back of the net to open his account for the club.

Two minutes later and the Phoenix had their second.

Midway inside the Mariners half, Duke played Duran in on goal and while the Mexican’s shot was saved by Redmayne the ball fell kindly to the arriving Kazuki Nagasawa, who squared for Piper to slot home from close range to make it 2-0.

The home side had further chances to extend their lead but Greenacre’s side cruised to their second win of the season infront of a jubilant crowd at Hnry Stadium.

New striker fires as Sydney FC edge Adelaide United 2-1.

Sydney FC stormed home to claim their first win of the A-League Men season, coming from behind at Allianz Stadium to claim a 2-1 win over Adelaide United.

Placed into a 16th-minute deficit when a Brody Burkitt-led press induced a calamitous turnover by keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares and allowed the 20-year-old to shoot/tackle the Reds ahead, Sydney’s frustration was increasingly building at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Though able to reliably work the ball into dangerous areas in search of an equaliser, the hosts appeared to have left their shooting boots at home: frequently blasting wide and, in the rare moments when their radars were attuned, denied by Adelaide keeper Joshua Smits.

But when space opened outside the penalty area for Rhys Youlley to take a touch and drive an equaliser into the bottom corner in the 64th minute, a pressure valve was released for Patrick Kisnorbo’s side.

They were ahead fewer than ten minutes later when substitute Akol Akon played Al Hassan Toure into space down the right, allowing him to dart forward and thread a pass across the face of goal for Nigerian striker Oriola Sunday to tap home.

Bodies on both sides fatigued, the game threatened to descend into chaos in the final minutes, but the hosts held on.

Beyond securing their first three points of the campaign, the result also secured Kisnorbo his first home win as Sydney boss at the fifth attempt – their previous win at the venue coming back in February, in one of Ufuk Talay’s last games in charge.

That milestone secured, he’ll now prepare to lead the Sky Blues into a showdown with Melbourne City, who he led to a title in 2021, next Saturday.

Losing their first domestic game of the campaign, the Reds’ thoughts will turn to a mid-week Asian Champions League 2 clash with Singapore’s Lions City Sailors.
