I decided to pull together a depth chart with players located in one position only (i.e. the position they are most suited to in the current squad).

Moses Mbye [Edene Gebbie] [Tyrone Roberts-Davis]
Asu Kepaoa (Reece Hoffman)
James Roberts Paul Momirovski (William Kei)
Joey Leilua Tommy Talau
David Nofoaluma Zac Cini [Allan Fitzgibbon]
Adam Doueihi Billy Walters {Michael Tannous}
Luke Brooks Jock Madden
Joe Ofahengaue Alex Seyfarth
Luciano Leilua Michael Chee-Kam Tukimihia Simpkins {Brandon Tumeth}
Shawn Blore Luke Garner (Kelma Tuilagi) {Henry O’Kane}
James Tamou Alex Twal Russell Packer [Ky Rodwell]
Jacob Liddle Jake Simpkin
Zane Musgrove Thomas Mikaele Stefano Utoikamanu

( ) = development squad player
{} = lower grader currently training with NRL squad
[] = train-and trial player

I’ve personally got Blore ahead of Garner, Mikaele ahead of Stefano for now, Musgrove ahead of Twal and J Roberts ahead of Talau/Momo… But these are all 50/50 calls for mine.

This highlights to me that we have the lightest depth at fullback and wing for 2021. Centre and Front row are stacked. While we have depth in the halves, we could do with more quality in the position (unless Doueihi steps up big time). Lock is probably fine as we could move Blore and Twal there if needed. Likewise Hooker is fine as Walters or Mbye could move there.

Hope you find this useful. Let me know if I’ve missed anyone.

It helps that a couple of those outside backs are capable of playing wing or centre. We need a backup fullback pretty badly we have no one at the moment without changing our halves too which isn’t ideal

We need someone that can easily cover 5/8th and fullback, we are extremely light at both positions.

At least we have guys who actually play 5/8 in the top 30, we have 0 specialist fullbacks in the team ? bring on Gebbie I reckon

We don't have guys that play 5/8th either.

Billy Walters and Jock Madden. Sure they’re not experienced first graders but they’re both halves. Brooks can shift to 5/8 and put madden at 7 if need be but we kinda play both our halves the same. We’ve got nada at fullback.

Billy is hoping to be back around round 3-5. Madden is more a halfback but like I said we play our halves pretty much the same and brooks has played 6 if we need to do that.

This is why chasing names rather than chasing talent is fraught with danger . We literally just spent the last 4 years knowing the affects of this .

I much prefer the approach we are taking now. We've been hammered thinking we can buy talent. It's really hard to do that. You need specific situations to exploit like JAC coming to Sydney or Latrell wanting out or guys like Tedesco who have something off about their character. These situations don't happen very often and what you end up doing is overpaying for name players.

Most quality players will stay with their current team and want to see that team have success. They may earn a little less but they are cool with that.

Exactly . Every team signing a player away from their existing team is usually paying “overs” . Unless the team is a basket case , like us during the Taylor years. Usually it depends on how much overs is too much overs . Eg . Paying Josh ALOIAI 700k a year is 250k over what he should have been paid to stay loyal , but probably 150k over what his true market value is . It’s just manly we’re desperate now ADB left .

Seen enough of Douehi last year to believe that he’ll make a good fist of the halves, a big body in the line and throws a crisp ball, hopefully been working on a long kicking game. He needs to be one of our best if we improve on 2020 for mine. He’s being well paid for a contribution too.

I have said this a lot but will say it again, he has only displayed the ability to pass a spiral left to right. His passing right to left is inconsistent and a little loopy for my liking. I also have concerns about his defense in the front line.

I will say he impressed me in his half a game at 5/8th against the eels and his spiral pass left to right is amazing but I still need to see much more to be convinced. I still feel he is a centre that may be able to develop into a 5/8th.

In saying all that I would be giving him the offseason and trials to show if he has what it takes to be an NRL 5/8th as he is our best option and think he will make the transition. I just don't think it is a certainty that he will be the answer at 5/8th for us.

I decided to pull together a depth chart with players located in one position only (i.e. the position they are most suited to in the current squad).

Moses Mbye [Edene Gebbie] [Tyrone Roberts-Davis]
Asu Kepaoa (Reece Hoffman)
James Roberts Paul Momirovski (William Kei)
Joey Leilua Tommy Talau
David Nofoaluma Zac Cini [Allan Fitzgibbon]
Adam Doueihi Billy Walters {Michael Tannous}
Luke Brooks Jock Madden
Joe Ofahengaue Alex Seyfarth
Luciano Leilua Michael Chee-Kam Tukimihia Simpkins {Brandon Tumeth}
Shawn Blore Luke Garner (Kelma Tuilagi) {Henry O’Kane}
James Tamou Alex Twal Russell Packer [Ky Rodwell]
Jacob Liddle Jake Simpkin
Zane Musgrove Thomas Mikaele Stefano Utoikamanu

( ) = development squad player
{} = lower grader currently training with NRL squad
[] = train-and trial player

Billy Walters is out with an ACL, I haven't seen Madden play 5=8th, has he? Even our starter has half a game experience as an NRL 5/8th.

Hard to disagree with your post although with most teams setting up with a half on each side of the field these days, that will allow him time to develop a right to left pass in due time.

I don’t recall seeing him kick much in general play but he certainly strikes them well enough kicking for goal to suggest that should be a strength for him as well.

He put a few bombs in the Eels game and they were very good.

I like my halves to be able to play both sides as it creates variety and allows you to better cater for injuries. Even when you play left and right halves I still like the halves to link especially when the ruck isn't in the centre of the field.

Mate totally agree about halves playing both sides of the field, gives another level of unpredictability and options in attack. I’m not expecting AD to be the next messiah but have seen enough to think he’ll build into a decent half.

In the current NRL I would play halves left and right but for the most part it wouldn't be left and right of the ruck. The only time I'd split them left and right of the ruck is when the tackle is very close to the centre of the field, the rest of the time the left half would be 1st receiver when the tackle is on the left side of the field and the right half would be 1st receiver on the right hand side with the other half at 5/8th depending on the side. I would be encouraging them to link. This allows the fullback to be more of a runner than he currently is as in the present day NRL he has taken on a lot of the role of the traditional 5/8th.

I even like when the tackle is made in the corner to have the hooker get out to 1st receiver to create a little variety.

Don’t expect a magical ball playing five eighth. Jack Wighton is not this either but he does better than good. If AD is being compared to Wighton after a few rounds this year I won’t be surprised.

That’s alright by me . Wighton just won Dally M.

Pure speculation but based on the amount of air time he is getting in the promo material I think Madden will be the 5/8 in round 1, with AD reclaiming the role in round 2.
Really keen to see how the outside backs line up, so many possibilities...

Given we have noone to backup Mbye at fullback and Madden is our only real half other than AD and LB, i'd say you're bang on.

Our depth at 1 and 6 is of real concern..

Gebbie might provide some depth at 1 (perhaps)
