Fair assessment. This part is the most telling of our problems for mine
No team averages more tackles inside the opposition 20-metre line per game, but only the Bulldogs score fewer points per tackle inside the opposition 20 than the Tigers' 0.51.
If we can actually use the ball when we have it in good field position early in games we may start putting teams under pressure
I think one of our problems, highlighted by the Manly game, is that we often try really hard in periods of the match, especially early, to develop a tight gameplan and mount pressure. First 30 minutes against Souths, Manly, Raiders all looked pretty good. But we are very fragile, and all that work is quickly undone if something goes against us. More often than not, one stroke of bad play or bad luck causes the entire operation to break down, then within 20 minutes we've found ourselves standing under the posts 3-4 times.
I'd be interested to see the stats: after we concede our first points each match, how often does the opposition go on a run of points in short time, rather than Tigers defending stoutly and repelling a second or third try? My memory says that once we concede that first try, we are highly likely to concede several more tries within 10-20 minutes.
The Manly match was case-in-point, so much effort and attempted control, to win the metres, get the ball down their end, get repeat sets and then jag a try off the back of repeat pressure. You are then supposed to maintain that pressure - no mistakes, work the ball up, kick smartly and make the opposition feel like they've never been let off the hook. It's typically easier to score your second and third tries after you have broken through for your first.
Instead, Manly fought back to even out the field position, then without having to do any extra work down our end, some offloads and a bad missed tackle gets Manly their first points from near halfway. Then suddenly its 3-4 tries in quick succession, heads down, missed tackles, lack of energy and application, and we barely see the ball the next 20 mins. Against Cowboys it was errors, just giving them the ball back any time we had won the opportunity to work with some possession.
