Weighing in at 52,800 tonnes and held fast by six million hand-driven rivets, Sydney Harbour Bridge officially opened for business in the midst of the Great Depression on Saturday, March 19, 1932
Celebrations on Saturday to mark the milestone include vintage train and bus rides, as well as projections on the bridge pylons showcasing its history.
The 1932 opening was marked by controversy when Francis De Groot, a member of The New Guard, a right-wing paramilitary group, rode in on horseback and cut the ribbon before then Premier Jack Lang could do the honours.
A story most Australians are familiar with is Paul Hogan’s career pre-stardom. At the age of 23, Paul got a job as a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge which, in the 1970s, required nerves of steel. Paul worked on the Bridge for over a decade and, during this time, was discovered and thrust into the international limelight.
Hey folks, If you or someone you know worked on the construction or maintenance or have a special memory of the Bridge, please share it with us.
