Tallyn Da Silva #270

he doesn’t want too that’s the whole point
he’s over doing the apprenticeship now. my guess is the club promised him the 9 jersey when Api’s current contract was up, and api’s decided he’s not ready to retire.
Tell him that the predicted future of the game includes a 14 that fills in at 9. He could go and play 80minutes at another club but he will likely be shortening his career by doing so. We value him as being part of the club now and in another 10 years.
Re-promise him the 9 jersey after Apis current contract. Explain that by 2028 you expect him to surpass Api as the dominant 9 at the club whilst Api will be spelling him and providing value in the 14 role. Use this to reinforce the desire to give him a long term career Api being the direct example of limiting minutes to extend his career.
This really should be an easy sell if there is nothing more to it and he does want to be a part of the club

Tucker, can you expand on this please😁
Weve all see interviews with this kid. He doesnt have that A-Hole in him that facilitates this narrative. I dont think Galvin did either but Ive given up trying to convince people on that. Confident? You bet. Arrogant and big headed? Not that Ive seen.
He was happily doing his apprenticeship, I highly doubt he has since decided he doesnt need it and is prepared to throw all that potential future development away so he can be the man right now.
He does not appear to me to be that type of guy.

There are persuasive individuals from other clubs who talk a big game and perhaps are in a position to offer more $. The SOO hooker for NSW I read is on $700k. Viewed in that market, what do you believe is reasonable considering he will be an understudy to Koroisau?

Richo needs to work some magic with this one imo. There has to be a solution to keep both players content with a club team priority.
If it pans out that Api extends & TDS does wish to go play 1st grade elsewhere, Richo needs to make this one work for the club.

Either TDS sees out his contract as backup to Api in 2026 or he secures an immediate swap for 2026 in a position of needs for us.

Here are 3 options from clubs reportedly keen on TDS ...

Manly - Reuben Garrick (centre/wing + goal kicker) or Caleb Navale (lock) as suggested by @jrtiger
Eels - Dylan Walker (lock)

Why a punitive figure for Koroisau? He is playing great footy and has demonstrated loyalty to WTs?

Because I'm more concerned about the next ten years, rather then the one in 2027

You might get something out of Api in 2027, might, but unlikely in 2028

And this loyalty thing, remember, he does it because he's getting paid very well.

And if he's so loyal, he can take a pay cut

My take on it, like it or not, is that the club realizes that they have a better young hooker coming through in Haywood, not necessarily my opinion, and are banking on him being the stronger successor to Api, hence why they are letting TDS go. This allows Api to finish up and retire at the Tigers and mentor Haywood.

Loyalty is not a thing, it is the quality of being loyal. I offer the view that even if Koroisau decided not to extend, there is the strong possibility Da Silva may still go anyway.

I'm not saying he is one Tuck but when was the last time you seen an A hole baring itself in public, oh the horror, the exposure is usually behind closed doors.

By 2027 he would have played 4 years of NRL, with possibly 50 games under his belt and 5 presesons of preparation.
We arent talking about a Galvin, Lauli'i or Matamua etc..who were put up far too early. This bloke has come through the pathways correctly, stopping off to play at each level and biding his time. Will he be fully ready by 2027? Maybe not, but I have no doubt he will be by 28 and by then we'd have a 23 year old with close to 70 NRL games, who has been in the senior system since preseason 23 and who is ready to rip and tear for the next dozen years.
Nah...lets let him walk.
I don't think it's so binary though. I don't want to let him walk either; it's just that if he's making a demand to move Api on, then that's a different story, and it becomes a binary decision.

I'd hope that Richo and team are smart enough to make it work for both - but if that's not the case, I dont think we should send the signal that a leader like Api, who is still at the top of his game and has stuck with us through our worst, is disposable for a kid when we're finally on the up.

I hope Richo nails this and finds a way to keep both. I can't imagine Api being the type of guy who wants to block TDS's pathway.

Not withstanding above comment, think it wld be a reasonable assumption that Api will really start to struggle in 27,and Id be inclined to let him go be the marquee at Perth in 27 and commit to TDS
We mite maybe miss one last year of decent Api at most .but if we truly believe in TDS its worth the risk
And Api deserves one final payday after the service hes given us
Best compromise IMO
Just hope were not making these critical decisions to save Benjis short term coaching career at the detriment to WTs

550 is fair because part way through that contract he will no longer be the understudy.
