Taqele's season just keeps getting bigger

Scoring 23 tries, delivering his own baby, to earning a NSW representative jersey – what a season so far for Taqele Naiyaravaro.

The giant Fijian winger has been in superb form for Wests Tigers in the NSW Cup this season.

His bulky frame, powerful running style and huge fend has quickly made Naiyaravaro a fan favorite amongst supporters. Many are calling for his inclusion into the NRL side such is the strength of the man.

Naiyaravaro was at it again at Campbelltown Sports Stadium last Saturday, scoring two more tries for Wests Tigers in their win over Mounties.

A day later, Naiyaravaro was rewarded for his tryscoring feats when he was the only Wests Tigers player named in the NSW Cup representative team to play the Qld Residents on Wednesday, July 17 at ANZ Stadium, prior to the deciding State of Origin match.

Facing the Queenslanders in front of a vocal sell out crowd will be less stressful for Naiyaravaro than the time he was forced to deliver his first child a few weeks back.

The friendly Fijian told weststigers.com.au of his experience in how little Ella was delivered.

“We went to hospital and we were told that my wife, Ethel, was too early and to go back home,” Naiyaravaro said.

“As soon as we got home at midday she started feeling the contractions and they kept on coming and coming.

“I just thought that if we got into a car or called an ambulance it would be too late, so I just had to deliver it.

“It was very nerve-wracking, I thought I was going to faint. I was shocked; I didn’t know what to do.

“I had the ambulance on the phone at the same time to, so they were talking me through what to do.

“It was a very unexpected delivery but I just had to man up, be a true dad and just deliver it.

Helping Naiyaravaro through his first representative game will a familiar face in Wests Tigers NSW Cup Coach Paul Fletcher who has been appointed as an Assistant Coach to Rip Taylor.

If our 2nd tier cap wasn't spent for this year, would he of made the NRL side?

I know he has issues with his handling and involvement, has he improved markedly since the trials?

Taqele hopes rep jersey leads to more honours

Wests Tigers winger Taqele Naiyaravaro is hoping his first representative jersey will help him achieve his ultimate goal – to play NRL this season.

The explosive winger will pull on the NSW Residents jersey to play Qld Residents at ANZ Stadium next Wednesday night prior to the third State of Origin match.

A player with tremendous power and speed, Naiyaravaro has crossed for 23 tries this season for Wests Tigers in the NSW Cup competition after playing in the front-
row last year.

The new father of one can’t believe how 2013 is panning out for him.

“I’m still in shock about what has happened. I like to thank God for everything. It is through him that I have got all of this,’’ he said.

“Religion is a big part of my life and I pray to God every morning and night. None of this would be possible without him in my life.

“Playing in front of a big crowd next week is going to be a totally different experience for me. I can’t wait.”

Although honoured about pulling on the NSW Residents jersey, Naiyaravaro says he must keep working harder on his positioning in defence if he is to follow in the footsteps of fellow Fijian wingers in team-mates Lote Tuqiri and Marika Koroibete.

“Lote and Marika have taught me so much about positioning and what I need to do,’’ he said.

“I feel like I’m ready to play first grade. I’m just waiting for my chance now.”

Apart from Naiyaravaro, Wests Tigers will be represented in the NSW Residents side by respected NSW Cup Coach Paul Fletcher (assistant coach) and Sean Rutgerson (trainer).

What's that about demon??

Lote is the most experienced winger at the team, maybe even in the comp having played for the kangaroos and wallabies.

And Koro has a lot to teach Taqele about using his speed/weight/power to his advantage which is something he's lacking, or has been. Haven't seen him in a few weeks.

Wests Tigers winger Taqele Naiyaravaro was quickly given the nickname ‘Mr T’ when he entered VB NSW Cup Representative camp but the quiet Fijian has been going about his business with minimal jibber-jabber.

The 117 kilo man mountain has had a whirlwind year thus far. He currently leads the VB NSW Cup try-scorers list, has become a representative player and even delivered his new born baby at home when his wife went into labour after a mix up with the ambulance.

Naiyaravaro’s coach at the Wests Tigers, Paul Fletcher, believes his winger can go onto to achieve higher honours in the near future.

“Working full time as a footballer has improved him and he is enjoying his footy,” Fletcher said.

“Last year he played for us and through our forwards’ injuries he played a lot in the forwards for us.

“We always knew he was a winger and this year he has grown in leaps and bounds.

“I am stoked to see him get picked in his rep team.”

Fletcher, who is also Assistant Coach of the VB NSW Cup Representative side, said a player of Naiyaravaro’s class will be a welcome addition to an already strong squad.

“The side we have picked is full of quality,” Fletcher added.

“Rip has been around for a while and it is a pleasure to get to know, and work with, other players at this level.

“I think the whole 18 we have picked will be more than capable of doing a good job next Wednesday night.”

Naiyaravaro will run out onto ANZ Stadium next Wednesday in what will be the biggest game of his blossoming career and one thing is for sure, we ‘pity the fool’ who has to mark him throughout the match.

The VB NSW Cup Representative side will take on the QLD Residents as a curtain raiser to the Holden State of Origin Series decider.

haha I sort of see where Demon is coming from. Lote can teach him how to position himself in attack. Marika can as well to a point…but neither of them have the first clue in defence. Anyway, good luck to the big fella on Wednesday.

If anyone is there, cast an eye over the Queensland 5/8 Cody Walker from the Easts Tigers… This kid is a star and carves up the Qld Cup most weeks, scoring 29 Tries in 30 Games. (Not many 5/8 can boast that strike rate)

If the Qld Forwards get some good meters down the middle, he will be obvious!

maybe my memory is clouded by all the awesome stuff lote did back then but i always thought his defense was somewhat okay? Probably have blocked out all the bad stuff

Lot better than what lawrence was doing start of the season anyway (different position i know).
