Seven News understands Taumalolo will reject a number of lucrative offers from other NRL clubs and even an NFL club to sign a possible 10-year deal with the North Queensland Cowboys.

I know he is very good but when was the last time a player signed a 5+ year contract and continued to play well?

No way…we thought we had him...

Its ok Geo - we will make a play for him after his 10 years are up - would make him 33 - type of player we would go for.
I can see the reports now :

Coach Farah ( WTs 11th coach in the last 15 years) said Taumalolo is the type of player this club has been looking for for the past 12 years. Although he is now 33 years old and has had 2 knee reconstructions and a shoulder reconstruction in the last 2 years i think he still has something to offer the Tigers. I think he will provide the go forward that we have lacked in recent years. Our young halves Brookes and Moses ( both 32 years old )have shown so much potential over the last 13 years but have fallen short due to a lot of things but specifically a lack of go forward. I'm really looking forward to these 2 middle aged rookies finally hitting their straps.

I love the Farah coach line but I think he is going for admin jobs. If he has them walking on egg shells at least someone is giving it to them. For the multitude of full on 80 min. games that Farah has put in I respect that he can keep his body up to it - a professional!

**Taumalolo signs monster 10-year deal**

Jason Taumalolo has signed one of the longest contract deals in NRL history, keeping him at North Queensland until the end of the 2027 season.

The reigning Dally M medallist's 10-year contract is believed to be worth $10 million, putting the 23-year-old lock forward among the game's highest-paid players.

Taumalolo, who has won a premiership and represented New Zealand in his time at the club, has played 115 games with the Cowboys since his debut in 2010.

He has turned his back on pursuing a career in the NFL after trialling in front of scouts in the United States in the off-season.

"The NFL opportunity was pretty big for me. Obviously to throw myself into another game, the negatives outweighed the positives," Taumalolo told reporters on Wednesday.

"It was all about securing my future and obviously the opportunities that I have playing for this club, to be playing for this club for the rest of my career, is a big one for me."

Cowboys coach Paul Green said locking down the star back-rower would give the club long-term security.

He said the length of the deal was justified.

"It definitely gives us stability. He's a key player in the game and a key player at our club," Green said.

"Jason's proved his consistency in recent seasons. He's certainly committed to the club.

"Whether or not the value of it is warranted, I think it is. I think it's a fair deal for both.

"Securing it for that far means all parties get a win.

"I think what it does do is send a statement that such good players, like Jase is as the current Dally M medallist, for him to commit his rest of career to this club is a huge statement."

Taumalolo led the competition for metres gained in 2016 when he was crowned the league's best player, alongside Melbourne's Cooper Cronk.

Displaying slick footwork and clean ball skills, he was the first forward to win the Dally M in 10 years.

Cowboys football boss Peter Parr said the club expected Taumalolo to maintain his status among the game's elite for a "considerable period of time".

"Given his age, we felt the longer that we could secure him for the better for everybody," Parr said.

$1M a year is too much, unless the cap increases to $12M, he is taking up too much as a (very good) 2nd rower. The half that will be required in the future, to replace Thurston, will want similar coin, meaning two players taking up about a fifth of their cap…..that's Wests Tigers crazy!

God help them if he gets long-term injury or his form slips. He's an almighty footballer right now and only 23 years old, but 10 years…sheesh. We've only got one 10-year contract to compare with and that's not working out so great right now.

I wonder if such a player would accept, in his contract, a pay reduction for career-ending injury. Probably not, he probably gets paid out.

Crazy money but if the Cows are prepared to pay, then good luck to him. Sets him nicely for life after league.

I don't know. He is close to the best player in the game if not the best player. I think it puts into perspective the sort of dollars that our players want. Woods is nowhere near that level. Tedesco is close but I don't think he is at that level.

to me it shows both parties have a very healthy transparent relationship with each other. No bs- Unlike us…

Haha yeah easy to say that when he's the best forward in the game, the Cowboys won the comp 2 years ago and regularly make the finals, and JT is their halfback and captain.

Let's revisit that concept in 3-4 years when JT has retired and maybe the Cowboys aren't performing so consistently.
