In a vacuum, there is nothing wrong with giving him a taste and then sending him back down to KOE. The problem is everything around him is a mess. If AD is leaving at the end of the year, picking him is indescribable.
 
I know I am about to set the noose for myself but hear me out. I understand why people are concerned about the selection of AD at half; however, is it really that bad a decision?

I've been one of AD's biggest critics through this whole saga. I've said publicly that if a player refuses to play the position selected by the coach, it's potentially a sackable offence. I also don't think AD is well suited to bing a half.

None of that has changed.

But here's the question you should be asking... What message would Benji have sent if AD wasn't selected today? Now I know you are thinking; he is setting standards, punishment for turning his back on mates etc. I had the saem thoughts initially.

If, as has been reported, they sat down, aired their differences, agreed to move forward and AD has recommitted to the club for the remainder of the season, what happens next?

Do you continue punishing him? Or do you demonstrate that once an issue has been dealt with, it's dealt with?

To me, this is where leadership comes in. If Benji is of the opinion that he is the the best half in the 17 we have available this week; then it is the right decsion. Discipline isn't about making an example of someone forever. It's about correcting behaviour, resetting expectations and then getting everyone focused back on the job. There is no need to keep punishing people after they've accepted the standard. If you do, you're no longer reinforcing discipline; you're holding grudges.

That's not leadership.

Benji has spent the last two years trying to build a culture based on accountability and standards. If the reason AD was to be moved to lock last week was because he missed the early training reps and we were playing on the Saturday, and he has stated that to the team, then he had to pick him.

Not because AD won; and not because Benji lost. Because that's what consistency looks like.

Imagine the alternative. He made a statement similar to above, AD has accepted whatever was discussed behind closed doors. The club publicly says the matter is resolved. Then Benji leaves him out anyway.

What message does that send to the rest of the team? More importantly, what message does it send to every player manager and every off-contract player watching from outside?

It says once you've made a mistake, there is no a path back. That's not a culture people want to join. I called it this morning; this stopped being about playing lock the moment SM/Moses got involved.

From that point on, this became about protecting the club, protecting the standards and protecting the future. Today's team list tells me one thing. Whatever happened has been dealt with internally and Benji, AD and the club are moving on.

Personally, I still have reservations about AD as a half; but that's a football discussion. This selection was a leadership decision. If it was the right one or not will play out over time.

In my opinion, after sitting back and taking a breath, Benji made a decision consistent with the message he delivered last week. He will pick what he thinks is best for the team on a week to week basis. Now let's see what the messaging is that supports the decsion.

Now Mason onto the pine after his poor performance in cup, and Toa after coming from the field injured after a very average game are the real head scratchers.

Some sanity.
 
This year’s team is now broken and has been for some very long time.
Not sure what triggered this or what happened to get to this point but unfortunately you can’t lay the blame anywhere but the coach and his assistants.
He has been given a free rein and the way this year has developed there are not too many options. No matter who you put where things will not improve.
And it’s not the board (although they did extend the coach to gain some stability) or the management by the new CEO that can be mostly at fault here … it’s Benji and the coaching staff that is continually displaying their inability to fix the wheel when it falls off.
Again trouble time and terrible to once again see the train wreck that has developed.

I'm just going to wait to hear from Benji in this week's pre-game presser & how the club explains the current situation to members before I form a robust opinion.

I cannot believe that a legend of the club like Benji would sabotage the club with inept decision making & leadership after talking such a big game. It's actually beyond comprehensible.
 
Taking a moment and considering selections, I think coach has gone with his most ‘senior’ members available in each position and charged them with getting a win for the skippers 250. Can’t say I agree with the decision but that’s what I read into the team list.
If by some miracle they win Sunday… the pitchforks may go away for a week. I hope for everyone, tigers win this Sunday.

Putting the whole Douhei treason revival 26 story aside then for the love of god , why is hope , Mason, toa and Murray back in for Heywood, Roberts , Andrews and afoa ,,, and why the hell is Sione back in second row and how well does Pole have to play off the bench to stick with that strategy only to go back to starting him … I cannot get my head around it, and poor old Lanyon ,, what has he done wrong ??

This week is about API - if people would just stop huffing and puffing for one minute - Douehi is in our best 17 and making an example of him for his crap choice last week - which he will carry for the rest of his career where ever ends up - doesn't do the team any good this week by not picking him - even if the fans want blood.
