The Australia Network

As a very frequent visiter to Asia I'm not real impressed with the NRL's decision not to broadcast any NRL or SOO games on the ABC's international channel - The Australian Netwrok for this season. I've heard the rights have been sold to Sentana who are useless at best!

This means that expats throughout the majority of the world wont see any footy this year…unless your into super 14 or the afl.

Terrible, terrible decision by the powers that be. We used to get 3 or 4 games per weekend and SOO and finals were live. There's nothing better than sitting in a beach side bar off the coast of Thailand with 500 expats and travellers watching the SOO. Now that has been taken away for a bit of money. The lack of exposure could prove a lot more costly than what those contract rights for Sentana, who barely have much of a presence anymore, would have been.

Short sighted thinking once again by Gallop and co.

pretty ordinary decision is right.

they talk about fighting back against the AFL, but then they give them near complete dominance of coverage in asia.
Sentata doesnt cover much of asia - from what I know. Think its mainly in Hong Kong and Singapore (maybe).

Also, the bigpond site (NRL.com) with replays and all that..
How come they block it in countries where there is no coverage?
I am in Italy (and was In Vietnam previously) where rugby union is known, and so is touch football, but rugby league is scarse.
Even the union and touch 'rugby' guys hardly know league and even if they look at NRL.com, they are blocked from checking out the best tries of 2010, etc..
(I know the answer - They have an online pay per view replay service is why.. But why block basic highlights and best of's the year afterwards?)

The Aussie network is a little slice of home in countries where english isnt spoken that readily. it has quite the viewership. Removing RL from its schedule is stupid.
