With the completion of the 2017 season behind us, the time has come for the Wests Tigers to draw a line in the sand and live or die by its decisions. Regardless where you sit on the clubs decisions during the 2017 season, we as fans must not accept anything less then what/why such decisions were made. 2018 must be a season of no excuses, a season that must deliver or some key people must fall on their swords.
I cant recall a time when a coach was terminated for ‘performance’ reasons so early in the season. The line delivered by the club was exact:
“Our position has always been to make sure that the head coach’s contract is tied to performance and that hasn’t changed.“
“We are committed to building a side that will be in a position to win NRL premierships and believe that this decision is the correct one for the future of the club”
“We felt the performance of the team this year – we're not going to sit here and allow this organisation to drift again and miss out on the finals”
The early departure of Jason Taylor can somewhat be seen as the perfect opportunity to bring in a seasoned coach to re-build the football operations throughout the 2017 season, complemented with an unprecedented occasion where over 200 players were off contract and a sizeable increase in the Salary Cap. Further to this, the club made the decision to allow 3 of its highest paid players walk, further enhancing the new coaches opportunities to assemble the best possible squad to deliver the clubs principal statement of ‘playing finals football’.
We are a football club that virtually has a clean slate in terms of salary cap mis-management. A scenario that has been the clubs number 1 fall-back excuse over the last 5 years. The club is in a strong financial position to deliver on its decisions.
In 2018 the CEO & Coach MUST deliver… There can be no more excuses & no more 'NEXT YEAR' statements!
