The 'other' Watene-Zelezniak set to roar for Wests Tigers

This bloke got a free ride into NRL last year by Ivan, so its safe to say he is part of the Cleary Team.

He didnt set the world on fire, and I'm not convinced he is gona make it at this level, but if he is doing everything right at training, and working harder than before, its all we can ask for.

If he gets a run in Round 1 because of his effort, he deserves his spot.

Loved that try in the corner in the Manly game. Sounds like he’s putting in a big effort to keep his position. A battler.

MWZ is behind Nofo and Fonua in my opinion, but I think he's as good as Kev; slightly different skill set. No dramas at all calling him in for injuries.

It's curious to me that I've hardly seen anything said publicly about how Taane Milne is going; I would be guessing he's first-choice centre?

I think he is a good player and would do the job well. I want to see though two wingers that are going to get us going every set and I think Fonua and Nofo are the guys to pick.

I was thinking you could move Fonua to the centres but then Milne or Marsters miss out.

Lets just see how he goes hey.
Everyone is "bigger stronger faster leaner meaner tougher more fit" in the pre season, then they actually have to play football, and all the pre season talk means squat.

I like MWZ, no frills outside back. Doesn't shirk the tough stuff and is an honest player.

I am looking forward to the trials to see how these guys all perform. Even with Suli gone there's still quite a bit of competition in the ranks so they'll all need to put in.

Bit of a journeyman IMO…personally thought he might bulk up a little to avoid those one on one misses that embarrassed him several times last year(incl 2 against Uate in same game),but hes gone the other way and trimmed down for extra speed(which the team sorely needs)
My guess Fonua,if super fit as alleged, will play in the centres with Milne and there may be an opportunity for a taller winger like WZ to field what is gonna be an air raid of bombs from Cronk in round one to his 7ft tall wingers!

Fonua better have improved his lateral movement based on his effort in the WC.

Winger/Center info 2018

MWZ // 186cm (6’1) 94kg
Mahe Fonua // 185cm (6’1) 103kg (for real, who measured this bloke?)
Kevin Naiqama // 177cm (5’9) 93kg
Esan Marsters // 185cm (6’1) 105kg
Taane Milne // 183cm (6’0) 99kg
David Nofoaluma // 182cm (5’11) 94kg
Corey Thompson // 178cm (5’10) 91kg

They really aren't much different to any other winger/center in the comp when it comes to height. Of course you get the odd 6'4 winger like Feldt or Tupou, but that's not standard height for a winger.

What concerns me is passing ability. How are the halves gonna pass to these blokes if they're 6'1? I think we're better off with Thompson and Naiqama in there.

The halves throw the ball out in front of them… Its the wingers job to run onto the ball?

Interesting numbers though, especially Fonua. Milne is the perfect size for a Centre at 6ft & 100kg

I got flamed for saying height was an issue with passing. In fairness for some reason I thought Reynolds was shorter then everyone else…. (I was wrong).

If you're doing solid looking passes and you aim for their chest... No problems. If you however do No look passes, then you are trusting that you are aiming around the chest. It's a little more natural when you have people of the same height.

To clarify, Josh Reynolds is 1.85M, Luke Brooks is 1.79 and Benji is 1.82M. Which is roughly the same heights as our wingers. Luke and Tui may have a slightly SLIGHTLY easier time passing to Kevie and Corey, but no where near enough to warrant their selection on that alone.... So this is a non issue for us (but if you have a Ben Barba or Chris Sandow, it's an issue).

7 players for 4 spots and each are pushing hard to get their space. Cleary has a plan and I hope his competition for places gets the result he wants. It's harsh but it may just work, glad Moses Suli is gone because 8 players for 4 is just going to burn talent.
